Match Day 4 – Netherlee Primary v Carolside Primary

Recently the Netherlee Football team had a match against their local rivals Carolside Primary School. The result was an eight five win to Netherlee. The match was split up into three thirds of twenty minutes, the first third Netherlee had a good start and went 3-0 ahead.

Unfortunately the second third didn’t go quite as well as we would have wanted it to. Carolside scored three goals in quick succession. Luckily for us we nicked a goal in before the end of the second third to give us a four three lead.

At this point we knew we needed to get back on top of our game which we did by scoring two more goals to make it six three. We were then unlucky and conceded another goal to make it six four. It then went to seven five then eight five.

Unexpectedly Glasgow McKenzie had to go in goals for us as our original goalkeeper, Lewis Gough, injured his hand and was unable to carry on. The goal scorers were Johnny Greenwood who scored a hat-trick, Ben Thomson scored two and Michael Foley, Christopher Jack and Alex Addie all scored one.

It was another strong performance and we look forward to our next game.

Match Day 3 – Netherlee Primary V Merrylee Primary

Congratulations to the P7 school football team for doing really well in their two football games against Merrylee Primary School. Both of our football teams went out and played good games against both Merrylee teams. Both of our teams played fair and well. Each team won against Merrylee blues and narrowly lost against Merrylee oranges.

Match Day 2 – Netherlee vs St Marks and Giffnock

It has only been two days since the Netherlee football team came back from Woodfarm High School with two fantastic, well fought, results against St Marks PS and Giffnock PS.

NETHERLEE                          1-1      ST MARKS                                                            (Glasgow Mckenzie 13′)               (St Marks #7 5′)

In the first game, we came off the pitch with a well-earned 1-1 draw. If we had taken our chances we could have won the game by at least two goals but we wasted a handful of chances. We were shaky at the start conceding after just 5 minutes. Joe McNulty made a good save in the goal but the rebound fell to the St Marks no 7 for him to comfortably slot home from close range. After that we got into our stride and started making chances. The first chance was a throw in from Glasgow from the left  in which Ben Thompson’s header was tipped out for a corner. The resulting corner was played short to Glasgow whose curling effort was deflected wide. The best chance of the game though fell to Johnny who was through but was unlucky in trying to lob the keeper on his weak foot. Our pressure finally told though when another short corner played to Glasgow this time by Scott Nicol struck a sweet half volley into the top corner two minutes from time. Then the final whistle went and we were proud of our character to get back into the game.

In the second game, we beat Giffnock Primary 4-0 after a dominant performance by Netherlee. We took our chances in this match and everyone played fantastic. We started from the off  when Ben Thompson played a good pass to Johnny Greenwood who played a cheeky pass back to ben who put the ball through the goalkeepers legs. 2 minutes later Scott Nicol played a brilliant pass to Ben Thompson who slid a lovely ball in to Johnny Greenwood who smashed it into the back of the net. A few moments later, Scott Nicol put an incredible ball in to Matthew Norrie at the back post who chested it and hammered a sweetly hit ball into the bottom corner. We found another goal when Scott Nicol put a ball towards goal but then pushed out by their goalkeeper to Craig Kyle who scored Netherlees 4th of the afternoon. Netherlee were very proud with their performance.

Friendly Match Against St Joseph’s Primary

Match date – 23-2-16

NETHERLEE 7-11 ST JOSEPH’S

This was a thrilling match with lots of goals that kept you on the edge of your seat. The end result was 7-11 to St Joseph’s. St Joseph’s took the lead very early in the game and that made it hard for Netherlee to come back. After half time it became very close as St Joseph’s had a one goal difference but towards the end St Joseph’s pulled further ahead. Everyone in the Netherlee team put in a good effort but in the end St Joseph’s showed their skills to keep the lead.

Netherlee vs St. Joseph’s 23rd February 2016

On Tuesday the 23rd of February Netherlee’s girl’s football team had a match against St Joseph’s girl’s football team. Mr Lawson offered us (the girls team) a chance to play them, so of course we accepted. The atmosphere was intense yet exciting and I think it was the same for the St Joseph’s team. The match was fair and clean and St Joseph’s were gracious in their loss. By winning 6 goals to their 5 we feel that we are capable of playing another match.

We are hoping to get another match soon.

Extra Curricular Clubs

There’s lots of extra curricular clubs happening at Netherlee.  Here are some thoughts from pupils.

P4 Yoga – by Eilidh

I liked the beginning because it was good for getting you ready to do the other stretches.  Some of the stretches were quite difficult. I found A lizard on a Rock quite challenging.

P7 Netball – by Brooke and Jodie

Every Monday some of the P7’s go to the after school netball club which is taken by Mrs Miller and a few other teachers.

We learn lots of skills such as the 3 throwing skills which are chest pass, bounce pass and javelin/shoulder pass. We also use skills like marking and going into a space so that you can receive the ball. All of us learned our positions and some of us had to use the skill of shooting.

Most of us went to the P6 netball club last year so some of us have had lots of practice and experience.  We are all set for competitions and tournaments and are looking forward to having a turn representing our school.

The positions we play are GS, GA, WD, C, GD, WA, GK. We all got a chance to choose our position and play it. The attackers are allowed in their half and can try to get the ball near the net. If they are GA or GS they can shoot too. All the defenders can defend the opposite team and stop them getting the ball into the net. Centre can go all over the court but can’t go into the semi-circle, they can’t shoot however they can defend and attack.

P2 Run Jump and Throw – Sam and Katie

We’ve been using the balls to practice throwing and catching. We also did obstacle courses for running and jumping, my favourite thing was the obstacle course.

I enjoyed octopus tig because there were crabs in the game and they were trying to catch us but they weren’t allowed to move forward or backward. I learned a ball game called BOMB, you had to sit down if you were holding the ball by the count of 10.

SportScotland Gold Award Presentation Sports Assembly

On Friday the 18th of September Netherlee Primary School had a Sports Assembly because we won the Gold SportScotland award. Kenny Brown from SportScotland handed over our award to Netherlee Sports Council and adult sports helpers who organise all of our sporting events with the help of Mrs McNeil, Mr Lawson and Mrs Scott. The Sports Council Reps are Ben Thomson, Johnny Greenwood, Ben Moulson and Rosemary Gold who play a huge part in our schools sports events.

Miss Bell (P6) gave up a career in Scottish hockey to become a teacher at Netherlee Primary School. Susan McGilvirie is a friend of Miss Bell’s and she played hockey for Scotland at the Commonwealth games in Glasgow in 2014. Susan McGilvirie now helps Miss Bell with the after school hockey for Primary 6 and 7.

Mr. Hay and Mrs. McNeil put together a memories-video full of special sporting events including a trip to see Andy Murray in the Davis Cup. It also had the Teachers versus Pupils in a game of Netball, highlights of the P5 Rugby Festival at GHA Rugby Club, The Ryder Cup festival that took place on our pitch, Choose Day Club and all the events from our Sports Week in June.

Next up, Mrs MacLeod and Mrs Callaghan led the school in a re-run of the dance we all learned during Sports Week. It was to ‘Shake It Off’ by Taylor Swift.

After this, the whole school participated in a parade around the pitch while singing ‘500 Miles’ by the Proclaimers; some classes were still in the Atrium while other classes were finishing their parade! The Sports Council led the school in the parade carrying the Gold Sports Award Flag, followed by the Adult Sports Helpers and finally by all the classes in the school.

The school worked so hard to get the Gold Sports Scotland award and Netherlee are so pleased to have such an amazing award, which is of such a high standing in all the school awards.

P1 Sports Event

On Thursday 14th May, our P7 Young Sports Leaders organised and ran a mini sports day for all primary 1 children. The leaders did a fantastic job and have now qualified as Young Sports Leaders.

The primary 1 boys and girls had a lovely morning trying out all 12 sports challenge stations and they earned lots of points for their houses as they took part. House points were issued by our sports leaders to children who tried very hard, cheered for their team and  showed good sportsmanship.

The points for each of the scoring stations were  added up and the winning teams were awarded bonus house points. In 1st place and winning 300 points for their house was Baird 2. Murray 1 came 2nd winning 200 points and in 3rd was Burns 1 who won 100 points for their house.

Thank you and well done to all of our P1 pupils and the P7 Young Leaders for working so hard.

Family Fitness Day Out – Ben A’an

On Saturday over 100 adults, staff and children climbed Ben A’an. Everyone managed to the top and enjoyed a well-deserved picnic at the peak of the mountain. Everyone involved had a great day out and rose to the first ‘family fitness’ challenge. Well done everyone!

P4 Cluster Tennis Tournament

Our P4 Tennis Team of Katie Needleman, Olivia McIvor, Gregor Chalmers Thomson and Irvine Robertson went to Busby Tennis Club on Wednesday 6th May to compete in the Williamwood Cluster Tennis Tournament.

Each player competed in 4 matches against players from Busby and Carolside.

Our players worked very hard and showed great tennis skills and sportsmanship. In the end, Busby Primary won the tournament and have now qualified for the East Renfrewshire Finals. Despite this, our children still enjoyed their experience and the challenge of playing very skilled opponents and we are all very proud of them. Well Done!!
