Extra Curricular Clubs

There’s lots of extra curricular clubs happening at Netherlee.  Here are some thoughts from pupils.

P4 Yoga – by Eilidh

I liked the beginning because it was good for getting you ready to do the other stretches.  Some of the stretches were quite difficult. I found A lizard on a Rock quite challenging.

P7 Netball – by Brooke and Jodie

Every Monday some of the P7’s go to the after school netball club which is taken by Mrs Miller and a few other teachers.

We learn lots of skills such as the 3 throwing skills which are chest pass, bounce pass and javelin/shoulder pass. We also use skills like marking and going into a space so that you can receive the ball. All of us learned our positions and some of us had to use the skill of shooting.

Most of us went to the P6 netball club last year so some of us have had lots of practice and experience.  We are all set for competitions and tournaments and are looking forward to having a turn representing our school.

The positions we play are GS, GA, WD, C, GD, WA, GK. We all got a chance to choose our position and play it. The attackers are allowed in their half and can try to get the ball near the net. If they are GA or GS they can shoot too. All the defenders can defend the opposite team and stop them getting the ball into the net. Centre can go all over the court but can’t go into the semi-circle, they can’t shoot however they can defend and attack.

P2 Run Jump and Throw – Sam and Katie

We’ve been using the balls to practice throwing and catching. We also did obstacle courses for running and jumping, my favourite thing was the obstacle course.

I enjoyed octopus tig because there were crabs in the game and they were trying to catch us but they weren’t allowed to move forward or backward. I learned a ball game called BOMB, you had to sit down if you were holding the ball by the count of 10.

SportScotland Gold Award Presentation Sports Assembly

On Friday the 18th of September Netherlee Primary School had a Sports Assembly because we won the Gold SportScotland award. Kenny Brown from SportScotland handed over our award to Netherlee Sports Council and adult sports helpers who organise all of our sporting events with the help of Mrs McNeil, Mr Lawson and Mrs Scott. The Sports Council Reps are Ben Thomson, Johnny Greenwood, Ben Moulson and Rosemary Gold who play a huge part in our schools sports events.

Miss Bell (P6) gave up a career in Scottish hockey to become a teacher at Netherlee Primary School. Susan McGilvirie is a friend of Miss Bell’s and she played hockey for Scotland at the Commonwealth games in Glasgow in 2014. Susan McGilvirie now helps Miss Bell with the after school hockey for Primary 6 and 7.

Mr. Hay and Mrs. McNeil put together a memories-video full of special sporting events including a trip to see Andy Murray in the Davis Cup. It also had the Teachers versus Pupils in a game of Netball, highlights of the P5 Rugby Festival at GHA Rugby Club, The Ryder Cup festival that took place on our pitch, Choose Day Club and all the events from our Sports Week in June.

Next up, Mrs MacLeod and Mrs Callaghan led the school in a re-run of the dance we all learned during Sports Week. It was to ‘Shake It Off’ by Taylor Swift.

After this, the whole school participated in a parade around the pitch while singing ‘500 Miles’ by the Proclaimers; some classes were still in the Atrium while other classes were finishing their parade! The Sports Council led the school in the parade carrying the Gold Sports Award Flag, followed by the Adult Sports Helpers and finally by all the classes in the school.

The school worked so hard to get the Gold Sports Scotland award and Netherlee are so pleased to have such an amazing award, which is of such a high standing in all the school awards.
