COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Community Involvement is an opportunity for S6 students to identify and set personal targets concerning their own particular well developed skills and qualities and put them into practice with the purpose of supporting others. Pupils choose where they would like to help out based on their own interests and personal skills and qualities. They try to achieve this through various community options which include:

  • Acting as peer tutors to junior pupils within a classroom setting
  • Helping the support for learning department with paired reading
  • Volunteering to help out within the local community.

All of our feeder primary schools welcome many of our S6 pupils to help out in various mediums. Helping in the primary classrooms or assisting in after school clubs in local primary schools are some of the services Mearns Castle Students offer.

Within Mearns Castle many staff support Community Involvement and welcome senior pupils into their department and classrooms. Many junior pupils find this help invaluable.

We have strong links with Isobel Mair School in Newton Mearns and a large number of our senior students opt to do their placement there. In addition pupils can choose to help out in a local nursery and a Care Home in order to gain experience in this field.

Community Involvement gives pupils the opportunity to realise and consider specific needs of others and respond accordingly fostering important personal skills and qualities. This programme encourages our senior students to mature and develop into responsible and caring citizens as they make the transition into adulthood.
