As part of our Israel 70 project and our Travel and Transport social studies topic, Primary 1 have been investigating ships and how they work. We loved hearing the story behing the ship ‘Atzmauth’ and how it was used to bring people to Israel.
We decided as a class we wanted to create our own model ship just like Atzmauth, and started to collect junk. A big thank you to our grown ups at home who provided us with this!
This week we learned about the different parts of a ship and how they make the ship go. We looked at the funnels, propellers, superstructure, bow, stern, decks and the anchor. Miss Lindsay and Mrs Carlton were blown away by how much P1 knew about ships!
We then used this knowledge to sort our junk into parts of a ship piles to help us with our modeling. Stay tuned to see the final results!
Last week, Primary 1 discovered they were the winners of the Tu B’shevat fruit sculpture competition. We were so proud of ourselves! Here are some photos of our sculture.
We also had a great afternoon today blind tasting different fruits for Health Week, we had to use our senses to guess which fruit we were tasting.
Remember, if you bring a healthy snack this week you could earn yourself some House Points!
Primary 1 would like to share their learning from this week.
We kickstarted our week with a visit to the school library to choose a book to bring back to class. We loved exploring the library with our friends!
We are also loving our new role play area – our very own Calderwood Lodge restaurant. From writing menus and orders to paying for our food, we have been learning so much!
Here’s a few more snapshots from our fantastic week.
We can’t wait to do it all again next week!
Have a great weekend 🙂
Primary 1 have been busy planning our new topic. We have decided to find out about what life was like for chidren in the past. We want to know what toys they played with, what games they played in the playground and what school life was like.
This afternoon we enjoyed looking at Pieter Bruegel’s famous piece of artwork ‘Children’s Games’.
We looked closely and tried to guess what games the children might be playing. We also discussed whether we play the some of the same games that were played long ago (we do!).
Have a look at it at home and see how many playground games you can spot!
Primary 1 have paired up with our friends in Primary 7 for some reading fun!
On Fridays we can choose a book for our book buddy in Primary 7 to read to us. We discuss the title, the author and if the book is fiction or non-fiction.
We also get the chance to rate our chosen book and give reasons for our likes and dislikes.
Once we have read the story, we take our book buddy to one of the areas in our class to complete an activity. Today we drew our favourite characters at the easel, acted out our story in the role play area and created model spaceships at the construction area!
We can’t wait until next week!
Next week we will be taking part in School Fitness Week, where Joe Wicks (a.k.a the Bodycoach) will be live streaming workouts to encourage chidren to get active.
Primary 1 are very excited to take part!

Today is the day that we carried out our Humpty Dumpty materials experiment! After exploring and selecting materials and making our predictions, we were ready.
We discovered that the hard pebbles cracked poor Humpty Dumpty!
Thank goodness for our springy bubble wrap, which provided a soft landing for Humpty!
Despite our feathers being so soft, poor Humpty cracked when he landed on them.
Our last material was our tin foil, which surprised a lot of us when it was a safe landing for Humpty!
Our next steps will be to compare our predictions and results. We really are budding scientists in Primary 1!
Primary 1 would like to thank all of our parents and family members who joined us today to see us being presented with our first siddur by Rabbi Rubin. We had a great morning and hope you did too!
