Scotland topic

Social Studies

During our topic of Scotland, we have been learning about Mary Queen of Scots. We found out Mary became Queen at just 6 days old!! She lost quite a few of her family members and it became more difficult for her to live a happy life in Scotland as the English began to hunt her down. She was moved to France when she was just 5 years old and lived out a happy childhood.

ICT

In ICT this week, we got the chance to research information about Mary Queen of Scots. The class had to write at least 6 facts about Mary into their jotters before sharing them with the rest of the class. Here are the two facts we found out:

Lila –  ‘8th December 1524 – Mary Queen of Scots is born’

Arjun – Mary’s last words were “Into thy hands, O’Lord, I commend my spirit.”

Writing

We have been learning how to structure a letter during writing lessons this week. After learning about this, we then pretended to be Mary writing a letter to Elizabeth I pleading for the Queen of England to release her from jail.  We will be reading some of our letters out loud to the class later on this week.

Busy time in P3!!!!!

Mitzvah Day

Primary 3 have been icing and decorating biscuits for Mitzvah day. Altogether, we iced and topped 180 biscuits before selling them to the other classes in the school. Our biscuit topping was a success as we managed to sell almost all of the biscuits and made around £30 to give to a charity of our choice.

RRS

We have been set the challenge by Miss Abercrombie to create our own Rights Respecting song. This will be done through thinking about the SHANAARI wheel and our rights respecting display in the classrooom.  The winner will be selected by the Rights Respecting team and be given a prize for their efforts.

New Topic!!!!

This week,  primary 3 have started a new topic all about Scotland. So far we have been learning about Mary Queen of Scots and how she became Queen at just 6 days old!!! We have looked at several artefacts from the past and watched video clips to help us understand more about this important person and how she helped shape Scotland’s history. This morning, we were asked to write a short story on how Mary would’ve felt living in Scotland (sad) or living in France (happy). I chose to write about how sad she would’ve felt on her return to Scotland. I hope to find out more facts about Mary Queen of Scots by researching the internet during ICT lessons.

Ark Attack

We have been making beautiful arks, in art and technology. We used paper, plastic and cardboard to build our own arks. We used these materials, because they float.

We used coloured paper to decorate our arks. We all liked decorating the arks, because it was fun, creative and messy.

The arks reminds us of the story of Noah, and how he saved the animals from the flood.

We are all very excited to go to the park this afternoon to float our boats in the pond. At least…….. we hope they are going to float!!

Learning with Mr Fry

Literacy

In literacy we have been learning to join our letters and learning to write imaginative stories. We have been using adjectives to make our sentences more interesting.

We like finding new words in the thesaurus, and we like using our imagination to write stories. We become the boss of our story and make the story our way with no one telling us what to do.

Numeracy

The circles have been learning how to calculate division with remainders. The triangles have been learning fractions and revising our times tables. The squares have been learning upstairs-downstairs addition.

We like maths when we can play games, because it feels like we’re not working!

Science

We have been learning about electricity, working in pairs to build a circuit. We have been using bulbs, buzzers and motors to show our circuits worked.

P.E

In P.E, we have been learning how to control the  ball, by using our feet and body to stop the ball before passing. The P7 class took us for P.E. We did basketball, gymnastics, balance and dance, it was very hard.

French

We have been learning animal names, parts of the face and family names in French.  It was very fun.

 Technology

We have been working toward building an ark in technology. We have collected different materials that float. We liked doing the experiments because we got wet.

Oscar and Zac’s time blog

“We are learning in Numeracy lessons about how to tell the time.  Mr Fry is teaching us about different times.  We now know quarter past, quarter to and half past and o’clock times.  We learnt that the clock is split in two halves: the right hand side of the clock is the past times and the left hand side of the clock are the to times. We have our own clocks and Mr Fry gives us a time and we have to set the times.  We have to show him when we are ready. The big hand is the minute hand and the little hand is the hour hand.  On the real clock in the classroom we have a third hand to count the seconds but not on our plastic clocks at our desks. Mrs Watson is also teaching us to tell the time in French!  We are just doing o’clock times with her at first.  She tells us the times and we make them on the clock. We also played ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf?’ again with Mrs Watson.  We like that game. Mr Fry will soon teach us about digital clocks and times.”

Back to work!

We are now back from the October week.  Hopefully no more ‘bitty weeks’ (That’s a word Mr Fry uses). We have already been very busy and hard at work.

SCIENCE

” In Science we were learning about what energy is.  Energy is like petrol for a car.  Food is energy for a human.  The sun is energy for the plants to grow.  If there was no sun, you wouldn’t have any plants because they need the sun to grow.  Yesterday we had two ice cubes and we were in partners and we did a race and the first one to melt theirs was the winner.  We found the fastest way to melt the ice other than putting it under a hot tap was to put the ice in our hands and rub it.  The heat and energy from our hands helped to melt the ice.  Today we are going to be doing more experiments in Science and to learn more about energy. “

Anita

NUMERACY AND MATHEMATICS

“In Numeracy and Mathematics we were learning about 2D shapes but now we are learning about tiling.  We firstly looked at  famous pictures a famous tiller had made.  The pictures were of a black and white dog.  There were no spaces in between the tiles. The tile pictures are clever.  We also looked at a picture of birds made from tiles.  We had to use a template Mr Fry gave us to create our own tile pictures using appropriate colours.  The picture was made up of hexagons, squares, triangles and rectangles.  You cant tile circles because then there would be a space. “

Ariel

FRENCH

“We are learning to tell the time in French. Mrs Watson has been teaching us.  We played ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf? in French outdoors. It is quite tricky to tell the time in French.  We also finished our art work of the houses where we labelled the different parts of the house.”

Ariel and Anita

LITERACY

“Today in Literacy we were learning about the ‘k’ sound. We are in the Suns Group. The Moons group were learning the same as us.  The Stars Group were learning about words with a magic e sound (a-e)”

Ariel

“We also did a little writing about what we got up to in the October holidays. It was more like a summary because we just had to include the important details.”

Anita

How we celebrated Rosh Hashanah

“We had a Rosh Hashanah assembly in our school last Friday. We ate pomegranate in school and Primary Four made Challah. I read about the pomegranate to the whole school to explain that we eat this new fruit on Rosh Hashanah.  I went to my Grandma’s house on Monday norming and then I went to Maccabi to set up things for the celebrations.  My brother and father  prayed at Maccabi in the evening. I went to my Grandma’s for a family meal. We had apple and honey.  I heard the Shofar being blown at Maccabi. Rosh Hashanah is a special time of year. We get to have sweet things and you hear the Shofar.”

Perel

“When it was Rosh Hashanah I had family time with my Dad.  We went swimming and visited my Gran.  I don’t celebrate Rosh Hashanah but some of the people in my class do.  I still learn about it at school like about the Shofar and how they eat apple and honey and that it is the Jewish new year.  I like learning about the Jewish festivals because I learn new things and I got to try pomegranate. I like to know about how the other people in my class celebrate Rosh Hashanah.  It is fun to learn about.”

Arjun

Fantastic knowledge from Saffi and Tabitha! :)

ART AND DESIGN/FRENCH

“We created a house out of paper and we also created a background with green and blue paint. We used blue for the sky and green for the grass.  We are going to add French words for windows, door and house. I don’t know those words yet but I’m going to learn them. If we have time we will add detail to the garden like trees or a bird bath.”

Saffi

NUMERACY AND MATHEMATICS

Circles Group

“We have been learning how to round to the nearest ten. If it’s 0,1,2,3,4 you round down and if its 5,6,7,8,9 you round up.”

Tabitha

Triangles Group

The children in the Triangles Group have been learning how to divide using their knowledge of the two and three multiplication tables.

Squares Group

The children in the Squares Group have been learning about pictographs and bar charts.

SCIENCE

“We have been learning about herbivores, omnivores and carnivores.  A herbivore is an animal that eats plants. Omnivores are animals that eat other animals  as well as plants and their fruits and seeds. Carnivores are animals that only meat. We humans are at the top of the chart.  We were learning about predictors and pray like a fox and bunny. The fox is the predator and the bunny is the prey because a bunny wouldn’t eat a fox unless the world had gone mad!”

Saffi and Tabitha

SPELLING

We have all been learning about the spelling rule ‘ee’.

“Seeds, seen, been, meet, between, three, keen, green, feel, teenager are some words which have this rule.”

Saffi and Tabitha

Gracie and Dylan the authors

” We have been learning about cause and effect when reading our group books. Cause and effect is when something happens and then explaining how and why it happened.  Our group were reading the story ‘The Little Girl and the Bear’. The girl wanted to get back to her house but she was in the forest  and didn’t know how to get home.  She was lost!  She was warned by her Mum and Dad not to go too far but she did anyway. She pretended to the bear she was on the roof but really she was hiding in a basket.  The bear carried her home in the basket but he didn’t know she was hiding there. The cause was that the little girl was lost and she tricked the bear into taking her home.  The effect was that she got home safely in the end.”

Dylan

SQUARES MATHS GROUP

“In Numeracy and Mathematics I have been learning about tally marks.  When you have four tally marks and then onto number five, you use number five to make a cross.  We even learnt about frequency tables.  You have to draw lines to make columns and rows.  You have to include words and numbers.  I am in the Squares group.”

Gracie

CIRCLES MATHS GROUP

“I have been learning about large numbers.  Numbers past one thousand.  We put the numbers into the columns; thousands, hundreds, tens and units.  It is a bit tricky but I’m doing well.”

Dylan

TRIANGLES MATHS GROUP

The Triangles group continue to tackle some tricky division work!

EDINBURGH BOOK FESTIVAL

“We went to see an author and he has written a couple of books.  You could buy the books that he actually wrote. He signed his autograph on it.  He drew us some cool pictures too on the book.  The author was called Dave. He writes the Squirrel Boy books.  They are funny.  We went to Edinburgh Book Festival.  We got to ask him questions.  Safi asked a question.  Primary Five and Primary Seven came too but they spoke to a different author.  It was a lot of fun. I think maybe I would like to be an author when I’m older (Dylan).  Everybody enjoyed the day, even Mr Fry!”

Honey I Shrunk the Kids!!!

“We have been having a lot of fun during our writing lesson this week.  We watched a small clip of the film Honey I Shrunk the Kids and then Mr Fry gave us the title ‘The day I shrunk!’  We had to be the authors and make up our very own story about people who had been shrunk.  In my story, I went for a walk and I shrank when I stepped into quick sand.   I hope I get to share my story with the rest of the class.”

“In Numeracy and Maths, the Circle group have been learning about place value with thousands, hundreds, tens and units.  We are using big numbers.  I can now write big numbers.”

“In P.E. we have been learning new skills.  We have been learning balls skills like dribbling and some basketball skills.  It was tricky!”

Lila

“In Numeracy and Maths, the Triangles group have been learning about division.  Division is harder than the multiplication tables and adding but its a bit like multiplication.  You need to know your tables to be able to divide.  Its getting quite tricky and we are doing division calculations.   The Squares group have been learning about carol diagrams and tally marks.”

“In Science we have been learning about food chains.  People are at the top because they never get eaten (although they may be eaten by lions!).  Birds are second in the food chain and then insects.  We are going to learn more about food chains very soon.”
