In Primary 5, in order to celebrate Yom Ha’aztmaut, we have been taking part in some very fun Israeli Dancing with Shosh! We also did some research into a famous Landmark in Israel and made leaflets as part of our writing lesson that day. Some of us chose the Tower of David because we had been learning about that for the Israel70 project and others chose the Western Wall and the Golden Dome.
The Primary 5 class are busy preparing for their Daffodil Tea next week by creating wonderful Daffodil Tealights made from clay. These little delights will be available for purchasing on the day and we think that they will sell out in a flash! We have been using the Art Studio to design and make our creations and it has been wonderful, since it is finally feeling a little more like Spring, the sunshine has been shining through the glass roof of the Hub!
Primary 5 celebrated their own Kabbalat Shabbat on Friday. Many of our families came to watch us and it was a lovely afternoon. Since Tabitha was unable to make it on Friday, Lila Samuels stood in as a wonderful Ima, helping Zac, who was Aba, lead the family (Aisha and Arjun) and the class in a lovely celebration. Since we collected Tzedaka as a class, we decided that we would donate this money to Marie Curie Cancer Research. We chose this charity since we are also throwing a Daffodil Tea and we thought we could collect all the money together and help make a real difference. We all researched a little bit about the charity and all the things that it does and we read these out as part of our Kabbalat Shabbat celebration.
In Primary 5, we have all been channelling our inner engineers, following STEM week and been taking part in lots of K’nex challenges. We have been building lifts that go up and down and have a functioning door that opens and closes. They all needed to be at least 30cm high and structurally independent. It was a lot of fun. Zac and Haseeb’s creation was then selected as the winning model and they have gone through to the Cluster Final, competing against other schools to create a Ferris Wheel!
Primary 5 all took part in 2018’s Show Racism the Red Card competition. This Show Racism the Red Card Competition encouraged young people from schools and other educational settings to produce creative work with an original anti-racism theme. Our whole class took part and the entries were all wonderful. We linked it into our learning and researched Black History Month and found out a lot of amazing information about people like Nelson Mandela, Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jnr and how all these people helped to create the journey against racism that we are still currently on. As such an inclusive and diverse school and class, we thought this was a great project to take part in and we really enjoyed the entire experience.
To make it even better, one of our very own classmates was selected out of 900 contestants to be a finalist at Hampden Park Stadium. A huge congratulations to MELANIE GROSSMAN! Melanie’s creation obviously had a great impact on the judges and she was given a highly commended award on the day. Luckily Mrs Santi and her mum and dad were all there to watch up go up to collect her award and certificate and to give her a great cheer. We are so pleased for Melanie and proud that her entry made Calderwood Lodge the only primary school in East Renfrewshire to make it through to the final.
We can’t wait to take part in 2019’s competition and continue to fight against racism!
What a spectacular day at the Wallace Monument! After all of this snow we have had, it was lovely to take a trip out to Stirling in the glorious sunshine and enjoy a morning and afternoon spent at one of Scotland’s most historical monuments. Having been learning about the Scottish Wars of Independence for our last topic, it was wonderful to see the place that so much of what we were learning about took place. We were able to see Stirling Castle, The River Forth and the different locations that were so important during the infamous Battle of Stirling Bridge. We also managed to work on our fitness by climbing the Wallace Trial and not to mention the 246 steps to the top of the tower! We were able to see 10 amazing woodwork sculptures all the way up the trial and got our photo taken with them all. They all marked a different moment in Scottish history and there was lots of information to tell us why these were so important. Thanks to Mrs Bernard who joined us today!

We have been lucky enough to have Rabbi Rubin visit us again to help us check over our presentation for the Primary 3 class. He was very impressed with our work and was able to tell us some great stories about his time presenting Messibat Siddur. We even found this old photo of when we completed our Messibat Siddur 2 years ago! We’ll upload our photos soon. Watch this space!
The Primary 5 class have been working away behind the scenes with the Primary 3 class.
The boys and girls from Primary 3 visited us to discuss questions they have about Judaism and their upcoming Messibat Siddur. The p5 class loved answering all their questions and chatting to them about important traditions and customs we follow in Calderwood Lodge. We decided to create a presentation that would hopefully help put all our experience into a nice lesson to help get the Primary 3 class excited and prepared for their big day. We will be visiting them shortly to present this, once Rabbi Rubin comes in to have a run through with us.
We really enjoyed working with the Primary 3 class and loved all their clever questions.
This week in Primary 5 we have been celebrating Literacy and today all the pupils enthusiastically came in dressed as a beloved character from a novel they have read. We did some great reading lessons and shared some of our favouirte books with our classmates. Have a look at some of our wonderful costumes. Miss Berrett and Dylan even managed to create an excellent Mr and Mrs Twit!!
This week, Primary 5 were invited to come along to an active Social Subjects morning with St Clare’s, where we heard and learned a lot about our topic, The Scottish Wars of Independence. Declan’s dad works in the historical museum and kindly came to talk to us about our topic and show us some of the incredible weaponry, armour and even a copy of the Declaration of Arbroath! It was such a great morning. We will use all of our new knowledge to hopefully be the winning team for our SWOI Quiz that is coming up.
