Tu B’Shevat Assembly

For the past week, P3 have been practising for the Tu B’Shevat assembly. We were each given at least 2 lines which we had to learn off by heart. After learning all of our lines we had several practices without the script to help us prepare for our performance.

The morning before the assembly Primary 3 had a dress rehearsal in the gym hall so as there would be no mistakes in the afternoon.

Primary 3 were all a little nervous as the moment had arrived to perform in front of the rest of the school and some of our parents and family.

We’re glad to report that the assembly went very well indeed with only a few minor hiccups. We received a huge round of applause from the audience, which made us feel as if all of our efforts were worthwhile. We would like to thank everyone who took the time to watch us perform on stage.

P.E and Topic

P.E

Since we got back from our winter holiday, we’ve been very busy in P3. We have been learning how to take part in Gymnastics safely. So far, we have worked with our partner to make different shapes with our bodies. We made the letters L and Y, a bridge, tuck and pike. It was important you tensed up your muscles so as your partner couldn’t pull or push you over on the mat.

Topic

We watched a short youtube clip of the 10 most beautiful castles in Scotland. We then used an atlas to have a look as to where each of the castles are located in Scotland. Using a blank map and labels(castle names) we had to correctly place the labels on to the map using the atlas and our knowledge of place names in Scotland. This was quite a challenging task but we got there in the end.

Shul Visit and Numeracy

Primary 3 visit Giffnock Shul

On Monday, Primary 3 joined up with Primary 2 for a visit to Giffnock Shul by bus. We joined in with the service by singing songs and praying. After that we lit the Chanukiah in the middle of the Shul before singing ‘Sevivon’ and ‘Nerli’ to the other members of the congregation. We were then presented with sevivons by Rabbi Rubin before tucking into a well deserved doughnut and cold drink. It was then time to go back to school, so we boarded the bus and set off.

Numeracy

This week in Numeracy the circles have been learning about area. Mr Fry asked us to estimate the size of different areas, including; a ruler, maths jotter, TJ book and a duster. After predicting the area in cm2 we then calculated the actual area using cm2 cubes or by multiplying the length and the breadth. It turned out most of our predictions were correct and only one or two of them were a little off.  We enjoyed carrying out our practical area tasks and look forward to doing more area work tomorrow.

Scotland topic

Social Studies

During our topic of Scotland, we have been learning about Mary Queen of Scots. We found out Mary became Queen at just 6 days old!! She lost quite a few of her family members and it became more difficult for her to live a happy life in Scotland as the English began to hunt her down. She was moved to France when she was just 5 years old and lived out a happy childhood.

ICT

In ICT this week, we got the chance to research information about Mary Queen of Scots. The class had to write at least 6 facts about Mary into their jotters before sharing them with the rest of the class. Here are the two facts we found out:

Lila –  ‘8th December 1524 – Mary Queen of Scots is born’

Arjun – Mary’s last words were “Into thy hands, O’Lord, I commend my spirit.”

Writing

We have been learning how to structure a letter during writing lessons this week. After learning about this, we then pretended to be Mary writing a letter to Elizabeth I pleading for the Queen of England to release her from jail.  We will be reading some of our letters out loud to the class later on this week.

Busy time in P3!!!!!

Mitzvah Day

Primary 3 have been icing and decorating biscuits for Mitzvah day. Altogether, we iced and topped 180 biscuits before selling them to the other classes in the school. Our biscuit topping was a success as we managed to sell almost all of the biscuits and made around £30 to give to a charity of our choice.

RRS

We have been set the challenge by Miss Abercrombie to create our own Rights Respecting song. This will be done through thinking about the SHANAARI wheel and our rights respecting display in the classrooom.  The winner will be selected by the Rights Respecting team and be given a prize for their efforts.

New Topic!!!!

This week,  primary 3 have started a new topic all about Scotland. So far we have been learning about Mary Queen of Scots and how she became Queen at just 6 days old!!! We have looked at several artefacts from the past and watched video clips to help us understand more about this important person and how she helped shape Scotland’s history. This morning, we were asked to write a short story on how Mary would’ve felt living in Scotland (sad) or living in France (happy). I chose to write about how sad she would’ve felt on her return to Scotland. I hope to find out more facts about Mary Queen of Scots by researching the internet during ICT lessons.

Ark Attack

We have been making beautiful arks, in art and technology. We used paper, plastic and cardboard to build our own arks. We used these materials, because they float.

We used coloured paper to decorate our arks. We all liked decorating the arks, because it was fun, creative and messy.

The arks reminds us of the story of Noah, and how he saved the animals from the flood.

We are all very excited to go to the park this afternoon to float our boats in the pond. At least…….. we hope they are going to float!!

Learning with Mr Fry

Literacy

In literacy we have been learning to join our letters and learning to write imaginative stories. We have been using adjectives to make our sentences more interesting.

We like finding new words in the thesaurus, and we like using our imagination to write stories. We become the boss of our story and make the story our way with no one telling us what to do.

Numeracy

The circles have been learning how to calculate division with remainders. The triangles have been learning fractions and revising our times tables. The squares have been learning upstairs-downstairs addition.

We like maths when we can play games, because it feels like we’re not working!

Science

We have been learning about electricity, working in pairs to build a circuit. We have been using bulbs, buzzers and motors to show our circuits worked.

P.E

In P.E, we have been learning how to control the  ball, by using our feet and body to stop the ball before passing. The P7 class took us for P.E. We did basketball, gymnastics, balance and dance, it was very hard.

French

We have been learning animal names, parts of the face and family names in French.  It was very fun.

 Technology

We have been working toward building an ark in technology. We have collected different materials that float. We liked doing the experiments because we got wet.

Oscar and Zac’s time blog

“We are learning in Numeracy lessons about how to tell the time.  Mr Fry is teaching us about different times.  We now know quarter past, quarter to and half past and o’clock times.  We learnt that the clock is split in two halves: the right hand side of the clock is the past times and the left hand side of the clock are the to times. We have our own clocks and Mr Fry gives us a time and we have to set the times.  We have to show him when we are ready. The big hand is the minute hand and the little hand is the hour hand.  On the real clock in the classroom we have a third hand to count the seconds but not on our plastic clocks at our desks. Mrs Watson is also teaching us to tell the time in French!  We are just doing o’clock times with her at first.  She tells us the times and we make them on the clock. We also played ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf?’ again with Mrs Watson.  We like that game. Mr Fry will soon teach us about digital clocks and times.”

Back to work!

We are now back from the October week.  Hopefully no more ‘bitty weeks’ (That’s a word Mr Fry uses). We have already been very busy and hard at work.

SCIENCE

” In Science we were learning about what energy is.  Energy is like petrol for a car.  Food is energy for a human.  The sun is energy for the plants to grow.  If there was no sun, you wouldn’t have any plants because they need the sun to grow.  Yesterday we had two ice cubes and we were in partners and we did a race and the first one to melt theirs was the winner.  We found the fastest way to melt the ice other than putting it under a hot tap was to put the ice in our hands and rub it.  The heat and energy from our hands helped to melt the ice.  Today we are going to be doing more experiments in Science and to learn more about energy. “

Anita

NUMERACY AND MATHEMATICS

“In Numeracy and Mathematics we were learning about 2D shapes but now we are learning about tiling.  We firstly looked at  famous pictures a famous tiller had made.  The pictures were of a black and white dog.  There were no spaces in between the tiles. The tile pictures are clever.  We also looked at a picture of birds made from tiles.  We had to use a template Mr Fry gave us to create our own tile pictures using appropriate colours.  The picture was made up of hexagons, squares, triangles and rectangles.  You cant tile circles because then there would be a space. “

Ariel

FRENCH

“We are learning to tell the time in French. Mrs Watson has been teaching us.  We played ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf? in French outdoors. It is quite tricky to tell the time in French.  We also finished our art work of the houses where we labelled the different parts of the house.”

Ariel and Anita

LITERACY

“Today in Literacy we were learning about the ‘k’ sound. We are in the Suns Group. The Moons group were learning the same as us.  The Stars Group were learning about words with a magic e sound (a-e)”

Ariel

“We also did a little writing about what we got up to in the October holidays. It was more like a summary because we just had to include the important details.”
