Mini-Olympics

Primary 3 are currently working on organising a mini-Olympic afternoon for the children of primary 4, as part of their Enterprise topic.

The children have split themselves into 6 groups and each group has been tasked with creating a sports event for the afternoon. Lots of things need to be taken into consideration to allow the event to run smoothly.

Each person in the group has been given the job of either: Promotions manager, Marketing manager or Team Logistics manager. Each group of managers have had team meetings to discuss the various tasks which need to be completed. Plans are now well under way for the mini-Olympics afternoon, due to take place on Wednesday 22nd June at 2pm.

Stay tuned to find out how Primary 3 get on…….

Magnets

P3 have been learning about magnets as part of our Science topic. To begin with we took part in an experiment where we used magnets to find objects which were magnetic. Using a tub of water, we placed in paperclips, coins, steel balls, rubbers, pencils and other objects. We then used our magnets to see which of the objects were magnetic. In the end we discovered paperclips, coins and steel balls as well as spoons were all magnetic.

We played a game called north and south. This allowed us to understand the two different poles of a magnet (north and south). We were each given a label which said either north or south. The whole class moved around the classroom until Mr Fry would shout ‘attract’ or ‘repel’, we then needed to pair up with another person (north with south or south with north = attract) (north with north or south with south = repel). This was great fun!

We learnt Maglev trains use electromagnets to move. Using a magnetic field and electricity the train, which is used China, floats above the track and moves people around quickly from station to station. This is good for the environment as it is a quiet train and does not pollute the air.

We used our prediction skills to guess which objects around the classroom would be magnetic or non-magnetic. Working as a group, we used a horseshoe magnet to see if the object would be attracted to the magnet. Most of our predictions turned out be correct.

We’ve had great fun learning all about magnets in P3!!!

P.E – (Gymnastics)

Primary 3 have been working on their Gymnastic skills for the past 4 weeks during indoor P.E sessions with Mr Fry.

We’ve been working on performing different rolls (forward, teddy bear and log), different jumps, (quarter turn, half turn and star) and balances (one foot, two hands and shoulder)

This week we were asked to work as part of a group to make up our own routines. They had to include at least 2 rolls, 2 jumps and 2 balances. We needed to make sure we were all performing at the same time, on a mat, and all moving in different directions.

We found this quite challenging at first, but after a lot of communicating within our groups we were able to come up with a routine.

Afterwards, we were allowed to perform our routines in front of the other groups, who then gave us some useful feedback to help improve our performance next time.

Stirling Castle Trip

Primary 3 had a fantastic trip to Stirling Castle yesterday with the Primary 5 class. We were accompanied on the trip by Mr Fry, Mrs Gage, Mrs Graham and a student teacher from Primary 5.

We set off on our journey, by bus, to Stilring Castle at around 9.15am and arrived shortly after 10.00am.  Mr Fry and Mrs Gage checked the group in and received tickets to allow us access to the Castle. We firstly set off exploring different parts of the castle including; The Great Hall, The Powdering Magazines, The King and Queen’s Sleeping quarters and The Galler…..it was very interesting and a lot of fun!!!!

Next, after having a lovely lunch in ‘The Great Hall’ together, we were then treated to an afternoon of Scottish History by our very own guide ‘William Oliphant’-the first person to stay in Stirling Castle way back in 1304. William took us back through the history of the castle and how it changed hands many time through the ages (mainly between Scotland and England). He spoke to us about the different weaponry that was used when attacking a castle and the weapons used on the battlefield. (We even got to see and touch them!!)

Both Daniel(P5) and Inaaya from our class were asked to dress up as Edward I and a guard.  They acted out various scenes from the past…..it was very funny to watch!!!!

Just before it was time to go, we visited the shop where we were allowed to buy a few things to remind us of our time at Stirling Castle. Some people bought plastic swords and plastic duel sticks, whilst others bought postcards and fridge magnets.

We all had a fantastic time at Stirling Castle and can’t wait to visit again!!!

Castle Building in P3

This week, Primary 3 have been collecting cardboard, toilet rolls, tin foil, string and flags to help us build a castle. We have been put into groups of 4 or 5 to try and work together to design a castle using all of the resources above. Before joining our group, we each drew a design of what we thought our castle should look like. We then shared our ideas with the group and decided upon a design. Then we needed to work out who was going to bring in all the materials that would help build the castle.

This afternoon, we are going to start building our castles in our groups and if we need more time, we will finish them off tomorrow during topic time.

We all can’t wait until we go to Stirling Castle next Tuesday with the P5 class. We have learnt so much about castles during our topic of Scotland that we would all like to see and look around a real one!!

Look out for our report on our trip next week!!!!!

I.C.T-Powerpoints (Famous Scots)

Primary 3 have been really busy this week, creating a powerpoint during I.C.T lessons on our chosen Famous Scot as part of our topic on Scotland. We all managed to create an opening slide which included a picture of our Famous Scot and the name of the person we selected. Here is a list of the famous scots we’ve chosen:

Alishba – Gordon Brown

Hamza – Sir Alex Ferguson

Ariel – Fitzroy McClean

Zac – St Andrew

Gracie – Robert Burns

Oscar – Chris Hoy

Melanie – John Logie Baird

Saffi – David Tennant

Inaaya – Andy Murray

Dylan – Ally McCoist

Harry – Gregor Townsend

Anita – Alexander Graham Bell

Hassan – Peter Capaldi

Tabitha – Gordon Ramsey

Hannah – Nicola Sturgeon

Lila – Calvin Harris

Haseeb – William Wallace

Arjun – John Paul Jones

After we’ve completed our powerpoints, we’ll then present them individually to the rest of the class as part of a presentation on Famous Scots.

Tu B’Shevat Assembly

For the past week, P3 have been practising for the Tu B’Shevat assembly. We were each given at least 2 lines which we had to learn off by heart. After learning all of our lines we had several practices without the script to help us prepare for our performance.

The morning before the assembly Primary 3 had a dress rehearsal in the gym hall so as there would be no mistakes in the afternoon.

Primary 3 were all a little nervous as the moment had arrived to perform in front of the rest of the school and some of our parents and family.

We’re glad to report that the assembly went very well indeed with only a few minor hiccups. We received a huge round of applause from the audience, which made us feel as if all of our efforts were worthwhile. We would like to thank everyone who took the time to watch us perform on stage.

P.E and Topic

P.E

Since we got back from our winter holiday, we’ve been very busy in P3. We have been learning how to take part in Gymnastics safely. So far, we have worked with our partner to make different shapes with our bodies. We made the letters L and Y, a bridge, tuck and pike. It was important you tensed up your muscles so as your partner couldn’t pull or push you over on the mat.

Topic

We watched a short youtube clip of the 10 most beautiful castles in Scotland. We then used an atlas to have a look as to where each of the castles are located in Scotland. Using a blank map and labels(castle names) we had to correctly place the labels on to the map using the atlas and our knowledge of place names in Scotland. This was quite a challenging task but we got there in the end.

Shul Visit and Numeracy

Primary 3 visit Giffnock Shul

On Monday, Primary 3 joined up with Primary 2 for a visit to Giffnock Shul by bus. We joined in with the service by singing songs and praying. After that we lit the Chanukiah in the middle of the Shul before singing ‘Sevivon’ and ‘Nerli’ to the other members of the congregation. We were then presented with sevivons by Rabbi Rubin before tucking into a well deserved doughnut and cold drink. It was then time to go back to school, so we boarded the bus and set off.

Numeracy

This week in Numeracy the circles have been learning about area. Mr Fry asked us to estimate the size of different areas, including; a ruler, maths jotter, TJ book and a duster. After predicting the area in cm2 we then calculated the actual area using cm2 cubes or by multiplying the length and the breadth. It turned out most of our predictions were correct and only one or two of them were a little off.  We enjoyed carrying out our practical area tasks and look forward to doing more area work tomorrow.

Scotland topic

Social Studies

During our topic of Scotland, we have been learning about Mary Queen of Scots. We found out Mary became Queen at just 6 days old!! She lost quite a few of her family members and it became more difficult for her to live a happy life in Scotland as the English began to hunt her down. She was moved to France when she was just 5 years old and lived out a happy childhood.

ICT

In ICT this week, we got the chance to research information about Mary Queen of Scots. The class had to write at least 6 facts about Mary into their jotters before sharing them with the rest of the class. Here are the two facts we found out:

Lila –  ‘8th December 1524 – Mary Queen of Scots is born’

Arjun – Mary’s last words were “Into thy hands, O’Lord, I commend my spirit.”

Writing

We have been learning how to structure a letter during writing lessons this week. After learning about this, we then pretended to be Mary writing a letter to Elizabeth I pleading for the Queen of England to release her from jail.  We will be reading some of our letters out loud to the class later on this week.
