Reading to Primary 1

dsc00651

This week on Friday we read some stories that we wrote and illustrated to the p1’s. The criteria for our books were to make them child friendly. We each got a p1 from downstairs and some people took them back up to the class and the others read to them in their classroom. I think that all of the p1’s enjoyed our stories and also our illustrations.  It took us about a week to make, illustrate and write our books. Soon we will be reading our books to the p2s and p3s and hopefully they will enjoy it as much as the p1s did.

WW11

This week we were learning about World War II and how it started. At first there was a global depression which affected Germany badly and there was little money and hardly any employment. Hitler was a German who was in the Nazi political party, he promised to make Germany great again. After becoming ruler of Germany he invaded Poland, Britain and France came to fight him as they were friends of Poland. This was the start of the world war. The year 1940 was a good year for Germany as they invaded France, Belgium, Holland, Norway and Denmark. Another important event of the war was D Day on the 6th of June 1944 and the Blitz which was a bombing of Britain and Germany for 70 whole nights!

Mitzvah Day

dsc00644

On the week beginning 28th November the entire school brought in toothbrushes, toothpastes, toys, soap and shampoo and clothes. There was a daily theme. On Monday people brought in toothbrush and toothpaste, Tuesday – stationary, Wednesday- toys, Thursday- soap and shampoo and Friday- hate, gloves and scarves.

On the Friday morning once we had finished collecting the Mitzvah day objects, Primary 7 packed them up in shoeboxes and gift bags. Most people had decorated the boxes at home using wrapping paper or paint. Refuweegee (a charity organisation) collected the donations on Monday morning. They spoke to us about their organisation explaining that their aim is to provide refugees with a welcome pack.

Remembrance Day and Poppies

dsc00623

As you may know, a couple of weeks ago was Remembrance Day. Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day, is a memorial day which takes place every year so that countries in the Commonwealth can remember members of the armed forces who have lost their lives serving their country.

Remembrance Day is always 11th November (11/11). It was on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

The poppy was one of the first flowers to bloom on the battlefields of Flanders during World War 1. Their bright red colour symbolised the hope of new life, and the poppy became the symbol of Remembrance Day.   The Remembrance Poppy has been used as a symbol since 1920. Today, poppies are worn on clothing in the days leading up to Remembrance Day, and poppy wreaths are placed on war memorials during the parade on Remembrance Sunday. This is why Remembrance Day is often known as Poppy Day.

In the UK, poppies can be bought from The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. The money raised goes to help veterans of the armed services.

Primary seven have made poppy pictures in art that you can see hung on the wall of one of the staircases.

Judo

              dsc00104

Every Wednesday morning, for the past three weeks, we have been going to Judo lessons with Primary 6. We have been learning lots of very sore and hard moves with a man who we call Sensei. We learned a move called “DE ASHI HARAI.” This move is when you take your opponent by the shirt, hold his hand and put your foot over their leg and then you trip them over so that they fall under you.

dsc00113

Before we started our session we always had to bow and say Ree to Sensei. As a warm up at the beginning of the class the Sensei would tell us to run on the spot, do star jumps and we would play a quick game of Monkey Tig. You play this by crawling on your knees and you have to try and catch as many people as you can.

To teach us a new move, the Sensei would chose a child from Primary 6 or 7 to help demonstrate. Usually at the end of each lesson, we play a game to test our reflexes called “Land and Sea” and in this game the Sensei will shout either land or sea. If he shouts land then we have to jump on to the mat and if we hesitate or make a wrong move then we are out. However, if he shouts sea then we have to jump off the mat onto the floor and the same rules apply.

My week. By Zainab Ahmed

This week we read chapter two of our books. ‘Insiders’ is a lovely book, it’s about a huge soap star who is going to be killed off on the show to make ratings go higher. Her children are not interested in her though. They are interested in an eccentric old painter called Mr Emmet. We also wrote in our French books and I sat next to Talia she really helped me when I needed it. Then, we made a fruit smoothie, the recipe was, 1 apple, 1 cup of apple juice, 1 banana, 1 handful of raspberries and 1 handful of blueberries – Yummy! Then we played a game called through the gate in P.E, you have to dribble through the gates with basketballs.

My week. By Sergei De Rosa Cairns

Make:

This week’s Star Writer was Aisha. So we made a fruit smoothie using her instructions. In it there was 1 apple, 1 banana, raspberries, blueberries and a cup of apple juice. It was SO nice.

Say:

Yesterday we talked about light and shadow, I now know that:

‘Opaque’ means that NO light can pass through.

‘Translucent’ means that SOME light can pass through.

‘Transparent’ means that ALL light can pass through.

Write:

We have written about Diversity Day this week. I wrote about looking round the stalls. I learnt that the Mormons have bread and water every Sunday. The water represents the blood and the bread represents the flesh of Christ.

 Do:

In PE we played ‘Through the Gate’ which is when you have to dribble a ball through 2 beans bags that are on the floor and see how many you can get through in a certain amount of time.

Smoothie Making

Miss Orchant had told us to do our best on writing last week because this week we were going to make a smoothie, it was so much fun. The smoothie was delicious. It was made out of an apple, banana, apple juice, blueberries and raspberries maybe you should try it!

Maths

In maths we tried loop cards. I thought loop cards were going to be a very different thing. If someone said ‘I have 12 who has six tens and zero units’ and the next person would say I have sixty who has…’ and we made a line around the room.

Gym

In P.E I was a tackler, people where moving about and if I caught them they had to stop and I would move around. Then someone jumped out of nowhere – that was a fun day.

Reading

The blue group (which I am in) are reading ‘No Luck Holmes’. I am very much enjoying this book. We have so far read up to chapter two. I cannot wait to read the rest but sadly there are only three chapters leftL.

Miss Orchant and Mrs Kyle, thanks for such a great week.

Make

This week in Primary 6 we made a fruit smoothie! When we made the smoothie I was very excited because at the end we were allowed to drink it! Firstly, the ingredients were 1 banana, 1 apple, raspberries, blueberries and 1 cup of apple juice. When the smoothie was finished it tasted fantastic. I really enjoyed the smoothie and watching Miss Orchant making it.

Say

In Primary 6 for our science we are doing Light and Shadow. In class we talked about some objects that are Opaque, Translucent and Transparent. We also spoke about the fact that the sun can only travel in a straight line!

Write

With Mrs Kyle we started to do some French animals. First, we got a brand new pink French jotter and wrote our names on them. Then we opened them and started to draw some animals. I really enjoyed doing the French work and I also love animals.

Do

In P.E we did “Through the Gate!. When playing you must bounce your basketball through the bean bags that are lying on the floor. Playing this game is very fun and enjoyable.

My week. By Daniel Sabba

This Monday we did maths. My group learnt about decimal points. I really got the hang of it. For the next lesson we had Mrs Rosenberg. She gave us our parts for a play. The play is called Yonah and the Whale. She gave me the main character, I was so happy and for my friends too. Oliver is G-d and Ben is the captain of the ship. Next we made smoothies, the ingredients were banana, blueberries, raspberries, apples and apple juice. It was so nice. But Lana thought it looked like sick. On Thursday, we were writing our e-portfolios. I wrote that I broke my finger at the weekend. That is what I did this week.
