We have butterflies!!!

We are delighted to announce the arrival of the first of our butterflies!

We are giving them some time to rest and recover after their complex transformation. It will take them some time to expand and dry their wings.

In the meantime, we have given them some oranges to feed on 🙂

Chrysalides

Our caterpillars have now retreated into their chrysalides and we have moved them from their cosy cups to their hatching habitat.

Here are some pictures of them in their new airy home.

Science Exploration

P1b have been learning all about the human skeleton.

Yesterday afternoon we investigated and explored a range activities that helped us to understand how the skeleton gives us support and protects our organs.

Symmetrical Sally or Flutterpuff?

Mrs Hughes was so excited to be asked to name one of our caterpillars that she came up with two options.

Symmetrical Sally or Flutterpuff…which one should we choose?

Caterpillars: Day Three

We were delighted to welcome Mrs Tees and Miss Cumming to our class this morning.

They were each invited to name a caterpillar, so we are pleased to announce Angus and Rainbow Sparkles Unicorn III (Uni for short)…..

Caterpillar Update

Over the next 7 to 14 days our caterpillars will shed their exoskeletons four times and grow more than 10 times their original size!

The picture below shows how tiny they are currently.

To make our tiny caterpillars feel more at home we have named them all. Please say ‘hello’ to:

Butterfly Life Cycle

We are very excited to introduce the newest members of Primary One!

Today we welcomed some caterpillars that we will look after over the coming weeks.  This will allow us to witness the wonder of the butterfly life cycle while learning about science, numeracy, literacy and environmental awareness.

We hope to raise our very own Painted Lady Butterflies which we will release in our new Eco Garden when they have emerged!

You can follow the progress of our new friends on our Primary One class blog.

P1 Class Trip

P1b had a fantastic time at the National Museum of Rural Life.

We visited the farm where we met the horses, sheep, hens and cows. We even met a day old calf!

We also explored the museum and took part in a fantastic workshop where we planted seeds in our own hand made plant pots.

We would also like to say a big ‘THANK YOU’ to Mrs Cowan and Mrs Farquhar who joined us on our trip!!

Under the Sea

Primary One had a fantastic visit from Miss McCann’s cousin Rona.

Rona is a Marine Biologist and spoke to us about some of our favourite underwater sea creatures.

She even brought in some baby trout, called alevins, in for us to see. They were very cute!
