Spelling City Website

Today we were playing some games on the Spelling City website to practise our spelling and some of the children asked if we could find a way for them to play the games at home too.

Below is a link that takes you to the wordlists for our most recent spelling patterns.  We’ll keep updating them as we learn more!

Holiday Maths Practice Requests

Some of our parents have asked for vertical calculations to be sent home so that the children can have a wee practice now and again over the holidays – just to keep everything fresh in their minds.

Here are two links that will generate addition and subtraction worksheets for you if you want to have a go.

http://themathworksheetsite.com/subtract_multi.html

We recommend that (just for now) the Cubes and Cones choose the options with no carrying or exchanging (called borrowing on the website), the Cuboids choose addition with carrying but subtraction without exchanging and the Spheres choose the options with both carrying and exchanging.

Happy calculating!

Friendship Web

We have been thinking about friendship and we made a Friendship Web.  You get a ball of string and throw it to someone else while you say something nice about them.  Then that person keeps hold of a bit of the string and says something nice while they throw the ball to somebody else.  Soon you have a whole web of nice things and everybody feels happy.

Mystery Poets

Which talented poets wrote these amazing poems full of WOW words and similes?   We’ll give you a clue… the poets are from 2C!   (Keep checking the blog – we’ll reveal the mystery poets at the end of the week!)

BIG REVEAL!  The red poem is Daniel’s and the green one is Oliver’s!

Learning About Life Cycles

We have been learning about the life cycle of a plant.  We learned that plants begin as seeds.   When they begin to grow they put up shoots and roots grow down into the soil.  We dug up one of the daffodils from the classroom to see the roots and the bulbs.

When the plants have some little leaves on them they are called seedlings.   After a while they become big plants with flowers on them.  The flowers make seeds and the whole cycle can start over again with new plants.

We cut up some fruits and vegetables to see the seeds inside.

Spaghetti Bridges

As part of Science Week we were making bridges with spaghetti and paper straws.  They had to be able to stand up by themselves and they had to be able to hold a 250 gram weight.  If you used one bit of spaghetti it would easily break because it was not very strong, but if you used a couple of bits then it held up better.  It was quite hard – even the easiest bridge was quite hard!  Only one group managed to do it, but it was fun and we learned a lot about how to make the things we build stronger!  (Also, it made some of us  hungry for spaghetti!)

Science Week: Planetarium

As part of Science Week we got to visit a mobile planetarium in the P.E. hall  and it was amazing!  We all sat in the dark and learned about stars and galaxies.  It felt as if we were actually out in space!

Fun Run Thank You

Thanks to parents and other friends and family for your generous sponsorship of our Science Fun Run.   We all got rather wet, but persevered for as long as we possibly could!  A big pat on the back to all the children for their efforts too.

This Week’s Homework

Here is the homework for the next two weeks.  It is due on Friday 22nd March.

Click here to see Task Sheet

We plan soon to start putting all of our homework sheets on the blog so that you can download the ones you need easily.  If this causes a problem for you, just let us know and we’ll send a paper copy home.

Can’t wait to see all the interesting science ideas!

World Book Day

We all had a lot of fun on World Book Day!  We dressed up or brought props from our favourite books, we went to a book swap, we read stories, we created our own dramas and we even wrote the opening for one of the school’s travelling books!   Here are a few photos of us enjoying ourselves with books!
