   Square numbers

We have been learning about square numbers and why they are called that.

We made skyscrapers with dots we completed all the numbers up to ten. We drew dots and counted how many dots we need on both sides, for example if you were doing 3 squared you would do 3 dots across and down. We chose card with different colours and stuck them down on the card they look amazing!

Don’t they look amazing! They are up on our wall and make our classroom look bright and colourful. Niamh and Bethany

Creation Stories.

This week we have been making creation stories from different religions. We made these stories into a movie on Imovie and we will  present them to primary 2. We also made art work and included voice overs for the movie, here is an example.

Pizza Express

We went to pizza express as part of our food and health topic. Before we went on the trip, we did a risk assessment in groups and shared our answers.

At pizza express they showed us how to make a mozzarella pizza step by step which meant it was easy! “When we were making the pizza, they told us all of the ingredients for dough: water, oil, salt, sugar, flour, yeast” – Calum S.

We learned that the oldest olive tree that has ever lived is over 2000 years old! “Fungi is the Italian word for mushroom” – Rebecca

“They taught us how to flip dough in the air to make it bigger” Luca

“We had to put sauce in the middle of pizza dough and then tap the side of the pan to get to move round.”

We learned about hygiene and why you have to wash your hands and take off jewellery. We wore hat and apron to make the pizza.

In school we learned that cross contamination is when bacteria from one food goes into another food. You can use different chopping boards and put raw meat at the bottom of your fridge to stop cross contamination.

We learned about cooking, chilling and reheating food to make it safe to eat and learned the difference between best before dates and use by dates on food packaging.

This will be helpful in the future because we will be able to make food for ourselves and it will help us in home ec in high school.

P7b‘s Thrilling Week

This week in P7b we have done a lot of fun things. On Tuesday, students from the University of West Scotland came in and taught us about dementia. First of all we did a quiz to see how much we knew. There were four stations. We learned that people with dementia have pins and needles all the time,  we mimicked how it felt by having a bag of rice in our shoes. For the second station we had our fingers taped together and we were blindfolded and had to try to put on clothes. In the next station we had our fingers taped again and we had to go in teams of 2, and try to lift up the peas with a fork. In the last station we wore goggles and glasses which changed the way we see. We had to try and complete a word search with the glasses on which showed how hard it would be for people with dementia. We also learned that there is more than one type of dementia.

In maths this week we have been learning how to find missing angles in different shapes. We also measured the area of squares and rectangles in outdoor learning.

We started a new topic about food and health. We learned what we should do before, during and after cooking to be hygienic. We learned about bacteria and how it can spread to different foods and it can harm you and give you food poisoning. We then learned how to safely store cooked food to make it safe to eat. We are going on an exciting trip next week to learn more about food and health- stay tuned to read all about it!

We continued to learn about substance misuse in Health and Wellbeing. We learned about the effects alcohol has on our bodies and how we could react to peer pressure.

The Best Burns Supper!

For the last 2 weeks we have learned about the structure of a burns supper, worked on lots of different lessons and then watched it all fall into place on the day. At the burns supper lots of people read out things they had wrote in class like their toasts and immortal memory. People also showed us their music and reading skills and it was one of the highlights of p7 so far!

We invited some special guests to join us at our burns supper – Mr Curley, Mr Bonnar, Reverend Maxwell , Mr Mullen (Emily’s Dad!), Natalie McMillan and Counsellor Gilbert.

The top table were welcomed in by a piper. Ellie read out grace before the meal and Nathan was chosen to read address to the haggis. Katelyn and Megan read out their immortal memory.

Emily, Calum Shearer and Abigail played John Anderson on their Violins and Calum Green played Auld Lang Syne on his Cornet. Lots of people read out one Burns poem which they chose by themselves and everyone chose a different poem!

We learned about the toasts that happen at a burns supper and we all wrote a toast to the laddies or lassies. Everyone wrote their own toast but Devon and Andrew got picked to read theirs out at the supper. They were really funny.

Our favourite part was having haggis, neeps and taties. Lots of us even went up for more when we were finished! We had irn- bru and shortbread too and we listened to people reading out the poem they chose.

We all sang ‘auld lang syne’ at the end of the supper. We hope we remember the lyrics to sing it next Hogmanay.

2018!

Outdoor learning: We liked our first 2 weeks of outdoor learning, we worked at three different stations and learned how to estimate and measure in meters. We learnt how far we could run in different time measures. We are doing outdoor learning for the next 6 weeks on a Friday and even had to do it in the snow! Today we made and measured snow towers and measured how far we could jump.

Robert Burns: We are having a Burns supper on the 26th of Jan to remember him,we have learned that he was a famous Poet. We learnt about the structure of a Burns Supper and took notes about his life to help us write our immortal memory. We have also learned a song written by him that we will sing at the burns supper and celebration called “Green Grow the Rashes”

Maths:In P7 we were learning all about coordinates with negative numbers ,algebra and using Daily 5 to revise our maths skills that we may find useful in life.

Technology In P7:

This year we have started learning about coding. We learned how to make a magic 8 ball using coding on a Microbit!

Welcome to p7bs second class blog.

This week we have been focusing on debating in our learning. We read a debate about if we should cull sharks or not. The reason we are learning about debating is because we will be going on a trip to debate about space exploration in October.

We have also been continuing our learning about space- on Thursday it’s our open afternoon and we have been learning two songs about space. We also have been writing newspapers about the moon landing and they are on the wall in the corridor! We learned about the life of an astronaut and how they live without gravity.

In maths the circles are learning about equivalent fractions and the triangles learned about the area of rectangles, squares and triangles.

We also did a sponsored bounce to raise some money for the school. It was so fun going on the bouncy castle and raising money!

Welcome to our blog!

Welcome to primary 7b’s class blog.

This blog will tell you about all the fun things we learn about in our final year at Neilston primary.

We are all settling in well to primary 7!

In the first week of term we created our class charter, which helped us understand our rights as children.  We also watched a play by Hopscotch Theatre, which showed us our rights in real life situations. “The boy gave away his rights, he was ignored and couldn’t learn anything so it showed me how important our rights are.”- Bethany.

In art and design we have been learning about hot and cold colours. We painted a landscape picture with half hot and half cold colours to demonstrate this.

“Blue, green and purple are examples of cold colours”- Calum G.

“Red, orange and yellow are examples of hot colours”- Ellie

Our IDL topic this term is space. We have made mnemonics to help us remember the order of the planets from the sun and from largest to smallest.  We used scale to compare the sizes of the planets to real life objects and have sequenced the events of the space race in chronological order.

We have been researching about aspects of our solar system and presented what we have learned to our groups using jigsaw learning.

“We created what we think space looks like using pastels.”- Emily

“I learned that Jupiter is the biggest planet”- Rebecca

“Earth is smaller than I expected it to be compared to the other planets”- Bethany

“We learned to write newspaper articles, we wrote these about the moon landing. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins travelled to the moon but Michael did not go on the moon as he had to orbit the moon in the spaceship”- Donovan.

We have been using sumdog as a fun way to improve our mental maths skills!

“It has helped me practise my maths skills in a fun way, I even use it at home to get more practise”- Bethany.

In PE we have been focusing on fitness and improving our stamina.

“I like doing the fitness stations like bunny hops, sit ups and the plank because it keeps me fit and healthy”- Georgia.

We have also been doing the daily mile each morning. “It keeps you fit, wakes you up in the morning and is fun” Calum Shearer.

Thanks for reading! We hope you enjoy these weekly updates throughout the year.
