Maths Week

Last week was Maths Week Scotland, it was organised to encourage pupils and teachers to be enthusiastic about maths. Lots of schools across Scotland participated in a range of activities. Here are some of the experiences we had.

SUMDOG

In class we used Sumdog which is an app where you can play games related to various  maths skills. We used iPads and Chromebooks to play Sumdog and collect  coins.

Ben enjoyed playing Sumdog because it was really fun and he learned alot by using an app to help him learn.

Abigail also enjoyed it because it gave her a chance to use a variety of strategies to solve calculations.

Beth E liked playing Sumdog because when you’re playing the games it doesn’t feel like you are doing maths.

Anna liked taking part in a national competition and at one point we were in 3rd place out of over 4000 schools.

P2 ENTERPRISE

Devon’s favourite part of maths week was helping the P2 class sell their Gruffalo bookmarks, puppets and masks to P1. She used her money skills to help count the coins.

Jack enjoyed helping the P2 class make their products and then sell them the next day. He helped the P1s work out if they had enough money to buy the products.

Eilis mentioned that she helped the P2s work out what change to give to the P1s.

MAPPING FROM MEMORY

We worked in groups to learn about banks, credit cards etc. In order to do this we quickly walked outside and read information on the wall, then we had to go back inside and add it to our poster. We had limited time to read the information on the sheets. WE LOVED IT!

Steven said his group had to memorise the information from the wall and run back in to write it on the paper. We had to use our memory skills.

Anna mentioned our plenary, at the end of the lesson we rolled a dice and had to answer the question according to what number it landed on.

P4 -7 FRACTION FIESTA

We organised a fraction fiesta for P4-7 because fractions are important to learn about. Teamwork was important to ensure the day ran smoothly!

We set up 6 stations with a range of activities to help the younger pupils develop their skills and knowledge.

Reece used his teaching skills and enjoyed teaching the other classes. His favourite station involved throwing a teddy to knock down cups sand identify which fraction was left.

Alisha thought we used our presentation skills to explain the activities to the other classes. She liked working at the KABOOM station.

Jack used teamwork skills and also felt he had to remember what to do at each station.  His favourite station was Catchphrase, where you had to answer a question then click on a square to reveal part of the picture and guess the catchphrase.

The Space Race

I can discuss why people and events from a particular time in the past were important, placing them within a historical sequence.  SOC 2-06a

Learning Intention

We are learning to discuss why events from the past were significant and sequence them.

Success Criteria

  • I can describe key events from the space race
  • I can discuss why the space race was important
  • I can sequence information in chronological order
Ben and Eilis working together to remember key facts
Holly B and Isla are working out what skills they have used today

Although people don’t talk about it, a good number of astronauts died during the Space Race – Eilis

I learnt that the USSR sent a dog into space. – Beth C

I learnt that Michael Collins did not  actually walk on the moon because he needed to stay with the ship. – Cara

One of the things that I learnt was that the USA were the first country to successfully land a person on the moon and the people were Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins but Michael had to wait in the ship. – Nathan

In the USA, space explorers were called astronauts but the USSR called them cosmonauts .- Steven

Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space sent by USSR. – Ben

Yesterday we use lots of skills one of them is patience we used this skill by sitting well and listening to the teacher. – Holly M

Sharing is key in this task
Working together as a group
We are listening well to others
Focus and concentration

We had to order the events from The Space Race – Isla

One of the skills we used was sequencing as we had to order the events in chronological order – Devon

We had to use our listening and understanding skills when Mrs Senior was teaching us – Abigail

Warm Colours and Cool Colours

I can create and present work that shows developing skill in using the visual elements and concepts. EXA 2-03a

What are warm and cool colours?

  • Colours on opposite sides of the colour wheel.
  • Warm colours like red, orange and yellow often associated with fire and sun suggest warmth.
  • Cool colours like green, blue and violet often associated with water, sky and spring, suggest coolness.

Today’s steps for success;

  • Draw a 1cm border around your card.
  • Draw a line across the middle of your card.
  • Select a section of your line and pencil in marks.
  • Draw spokes out from the selected section.
  • Decide which half will use cold colours, and which will use warm colours.
  • Add a horizon line in black using gentle brushstrokes.
  • Finally, add patterns to make the bottom half look like crops in your field.

Walk about, talk about

We worked in groups of 4 or 5 to answer a range of questions about our upcoming study on Space.  Each group had a different coloured pen. This meant we could tell which group was saying what.

We moved around each piece of flip chart paper and wrote as many answers to the question as we could. We could also tick and cross what we agreed and disagreed with.

Here are some of the skills we developed.

‘In the walk about, talk about we had to remember what we already knew about space and complete all the stations.’ – Lewis

‘We used our communication skills during this activity’ – Holly B

‘One of the skills we used was team building because we had to discuss our answers together’ – Devon

‘A skill we worked on was friendship because even if people in our group weren’t our normal friends, we got to know one another and didn’t argue.’ – Jack

‘Some of the skills we developed were making sure everyone was included and decision making.’ – Katelyn

‘One of the other skills we worked on was our listening skills. We had to listen to others when they were speaking to ensure we wrote down the correct thing’ – Abigail

‘To improve our teamwork skills we had to communicate regularly and include everyone and their opinions.’ – Beth C

‘We used our memory to help us come up with what we already knew about space. ‘ – Alisha
