Learning Journeys with Mr Atkinson

Hi P7b readers, I wanted to update you on what we have been doing in our Learning Journeys since my last entry.

As part of our Countryside versus Concrete Jungle Learning Journey we revisited parts of plants and what they require to survive. Once having been explained how fertilisers affect the development of plants the pupils then researched different types organic and inorganic fertilisers. The class then created farming maps of Scotland and made a key to label arable, dairy and mixed farming areas.  We have also partnered with the University of Glasgow and taken part in their educational programme Sci-Seedlets. In this project we did a science experiment to test and compare how maize seeds grow when given water or salty water. This was to check whether sea water would make a good alternative option to watering plants as droughts are increasing in parts of the world. We observed the growth progress of the plants over a couple of weeks and at the end of the experiment we took them out the soil to study. The pupils noticed that the roots were smaller in the salt water container and concluded that salt water could be used to feed plants but their growth would be delayed. P7B have also investigated how land is used and visited the National Museum of Rural Life.  Whilst at the museum the pupils learned about how farming technology has evolved over the years, how maths is used to run a farm and even had a chance to ride a tractor! Inspired from this trip, the pupils have been looking at local maps and commenting on how the area around the school has changed due to the construction of commercial, residential and recreational buildings and with the development of transport links. They also used Venn diagrams to compare the differences between a Scottish clan settlement with a modern day town.  P7B then evaluated sources of differing opinions on how land should be used which involved identifying the purpose, main ideas and highlighting the supporting evidence. Equipped with this information the pupils were then challenged to collaborate in groups and create arguments on their chosen stance about whether Rouken Glen Park should be replaced with homes or not.

Our new Learning Journey, STAT Wars, has challenged P7B to reflect on their own carbon footprints. In teams, the pupils have been applying their Meta-Skills of communicating, collaborating, critical thinking and leading whilst researching a specific problem related to CO2 which was identified when they completed their carbon calculator on Excel. The groups have been investigating different sources to help them make notes and have turned some of their recorded information into graphs which they will include in their upcoming presentations.

World Book Day!

For World Book day we took part in a ‘Scene in a Snap’ school challenge and we WON!

Each class had to submit a scene from a popular children’s book captured in a photo. We submitted 2 different scenes. One was from Matilda and the other was from ‘The Boy in the Dress’.

We had lots of fun recreating the 2 scenes and are pleased to be the Upper School winners!

Last week of February!

This week we had a chance to round up our RME topic and shared our completed story books and posters with the Primary 2s. We read to them and prepared questions for them to answer.

We also completed our final block of Badminton with a fun and friendly class tournament.

Lastly, today we sent our Crookfur team to the Lord Provost debate. All 3 of our members performed very well. We are proud of our debating team!

Stories from World Religions

Over the last few weeks we have thoroughly enjoyed learning stories from world religions including: Christianity, Islam and Judaism. We have explored the moral of the different stories and trying to link them to life lessons.

We have looked at similarities and differences between these stories across the religions and have been very surprised at how similar things really are. Such as the morals and values.

We have explored:

Adam and Eve (Hawa)

Noah (Nuh pbuh) and the great flood

David and Goliath (Dawud and Jalut)

We have also been extremely lucky to have 2 visitors that have kindly came in to share the story of Abraham. Reverend Lazonby came in to teach us about the story of Abraham while Ibrahim’s dad came in to teach us about the story of prophet Ibrahim (pbuh).

Stories from the Bible

This week we started our learning journey about stories from Bible. We started with reading the story of Adam and Eve and compared it to the version in Islam.

We took part in a mock trial which included a defense and persecution team for Adam, Eve and the serpent.

Here are a few pictures from this week and our team building task from last week.

Team Building Week

This week we have working on Team Building skills and how to work better in a team.

We have explored the importance of roles, communication, collaboration, time management and problem solving. Here are a few of the tasks we had to complete.

Name Line in silence – We had to work together to form a line in alphabetical order but silently!

Paper chain – In teams of 5, we were given one piece of A4 paper, 2 scissors and 1 glue stick and we had to create the longest paper chain within 10 minutes! The time pressure was challenging.

Boat challenge – In teams of 5, we had to solve a problem. We needed to use recycled materials to create a boat that would hold toy animals without sinking!

Recipes for instructional writing

This week for writing, we have started looking at instructional writing.

We explored features of recipes by looking for vocabulary used in Mr Flood’s cook books.

We created our own word bank, then wrote our own recipes for an onion soup!

Canadian adventures

We just finished our mini country comparison topic on Canada.

During this topic we:

  • Compared animals from Scotland and Canada and learned how different  adaptations make animals more suited for different climates and habitats.
  • Wrote a persuasive letter to Mrs McGuigan to persuade her to let us have a school trip to Canada.
  • Researched foods from Canada – maple syrup in particular.
  • Today we ended it with enjoying some pancakes with maple syrup ourselves!
