Friday 20th March: British Science Week

This week we continued our learning journey which is related to British Science Week. We combined our knowledge of salt to conduct an experiment to investigate the impact of salt on watercolour. The pupils applied their creativity and curiosity to create a hypothesis then created very unique pieces of salt watercolour art.

Learning Journeys with Mr Atkinson

Hi P6C readers, I wanted to update you on what we have been doing in our Learning Journeys since my last entry.

The pupils were fascinated with learning about AI and they effectively used the Meta-Skills of critical thinking and curiosity to investigate the impact of this technological development in our lives. P6C displayed excellent collaboration, leadership, communication, initiative and adapting skills when working in groups for the Sky Up Academy Studios project. This challenged each group to research and summarise facts about an aspect of AI and use their extensive notes to create a script for their team’s news reporters. They then selected media clips, music and green screen backgrounds before recording their news reel. The class has also been discovering how the internet works and have learned about the different hardware pieces in computer that make it function. In addition, we discussed the limitations of AI and then the class attempted to create their own AI programmes to solve maths questions by giving it accurate and clear prompts. P6C also participated in an online workshop as part of Maths Week Scotland called “Defend the Rhino with Maths and AI” which taught the pupils how AI is being used to help assist organisations with protecting endangered species. This involved pupils applying their knowledge of maths, numeracy, and data science skills to analyse CCTV data from across a South African national park. Then they used a machine learning model to recognise images of poachers. The pupils also spent some time investigating how AI is used by companies and created mind maps recording notes of how AI is impacting the planet. To finish the Learning Journey, P6C took part in an art contest using Adobe Express to test who was more creative, humans or the  AI programme. The pupils also were challenged to see if they could identify AI generated music or music produced by real life artists.

Our new Learning Journey, Roads of the Future, has encouraged the pupils to explore the Sustainable Development Goals. They have been investigating how the SDGs could be incorporated into designing a new road which has challenged the class to use their critical-thinking, initiative and adapting Meta Skills. They have also been learning about the properties of a variety of materials and used atlases to locate different roads in Scotland. They then worked in teams to research and record the history of some of roads that they had sketched onto their roadmaps of Scotland. P6C have also been comparing different types of road crossings and we discussed some examples that exist in the local area. The final experience of this Learning Journey is working in teams to successfully construct a sustainably designed road for the Transport Scotland – Academy9 Sustainable Solutions Challenge which is linked to the A9 road project. The groups are in the middle of this project having finished their Tinkercad prototypes and are now building their models with the items that were kindly donated.

Friday 13th March 2026: British Science Week

This week was British Science Week. This week’s theme was curiosity. The class created scientific questions and created our hypotheses whilst conducting experiments related to our current learning journey.

We used curiosity as our focus throughout lessons, including our maths lessons which explored the equivalences between percentages, decimal numbers and fractions.

Friday 6th March 2026: World Book Day

This week we celebrated World Book Day. We participated in a number of experiences including:

  • We participated in the Snap a Scene Competition
  • We created a Picture Book to gift the buddies
  • We shared a story with the P1 buddies and heard them read

Friday 27th February 2026: Music Lesson

This term, we have been focusing on developing our musical skills, including learning to play the glockenspiel. Today we received our first music lesson from two S6 pupils from Eastwood High School. They taught us about orchestras, the instrument families and we even got a chance to try their musical instruments.

Friday 12th February 2026: Engineering

Primary 6’s current learning journey is focusing on engineering. The learners have created engineering firms and they are working towards building a new sporting venue for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Thank you to two of our amazing volunteers who have visited the school to speak to the learners about their careers in engineering, the meta skills they use within their work and the link between engineering and maths. It has helped the learners gain a better understanding of how their learning relates to the real world.

Friday 5th January 2026: Safer Internet Day

Next week is Safer Internet Day. In preparation for Tuesday, P6 invited their buddies to their classroom to discuss how to stay safe when researching online. They showed their buddies how to use Kiddle (a child friendly search engine) and helped them to find facts. The P1’s will use this to help them write a fact file about their favourite animal next week.

Friday 30th January 2026: Area and Perimeter

This week we applied our learning of finding the area and perimeter of 2D shapes through our new learning journey. The learners discussed the job that require strong knowledge of these math skills. Everyone worked well with their team to recreate the floor plan of our client’s new home then priced up different flooring options.
