Eid Celebration Day – Friday 27th March

Today was Eid celebration day at Crookfur!

Lots of us wore cultural or party clothes to celebrate! We listened to an English cricketer read a story called “Under my Hijab” that Mrs Nasar had recommended.  At Assembly, Mrs Nasar, Mrs Rasul and three Primary 7 pupils told us about Eid-al-Fitr and Jummah club.

In the afternoon, we made Eid pop up cards.

Friday 20th March – using technology in our learning

Today we used Scratch and we made some animations.  We were working out how to do things and practice (IR)

Today with Mr Atkinson we were making adverts about going to France and the things that you can do using IMovie (AMc)

Yesterday we made Google Slides showing how to be safe online (IMc)

Yesterday we were doing google Slides about digital citizenships (AG).

Recently we used light and dark colours to show shadow on pixel art (FA).

Friday 13th March – Numeracy and Maths

This week, we have been focussing on capacity and volume.

We have estimated, measured and refined our estimates for specific volumes. We also used our partitioning skills to convert millilitres and litres. Practicing it first in mental maths helped a lot!

Thursday 5th March: World Book Day

We had a busy World Book Day – especially our Reading Buddies! They helped create the activities used to celebrate across the school, staffed the book swap and delivered the book tokens to everyone.

First, we took part in the Footy and Booky Quiz online.

As part of the Reading Buddies suggested activities, we re-created scenes from children’s books.  We made the props ourselves too.

Can you match the book to the photograph?

Peter Rabbit x 2

Matilda

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Tom Gates

Little Red Riding Hood

Dog Man

Some of us worked at home on the Story in a Jar/Box activity too. They are all on display at the front of our school.

Friday 27th February – Weight and Technologies

This week, we have continued our work on weight.  Some of us used the balance scales to weigh classroom items. This meant we had to use addition and multiplication skills too!

This week, we started our Technologies Learning Journey.  We have been learning about gaming and consoles from the 1970s, 80s and 90s. We have used our research skills, sequenced information, created a short profile and compared information with modern gaming using a Venn diagram.

In later weeks, we will do some coding, explore internet safety, investigate how batteries work and create some pixel art.

Friday 20th February: Maths and Lunar new Year

This week, we made fortune tellers to celebrate Lunar New Year.  We wrote “Happy New year” on the outside in Chinese characters and then chose numbers for the inside.  Then, we created some new year messages.  The number 0 was definitely the most challenging!

In Numeracy and Maths we have started exploring weight.  We used concrete materials (the thousands, hundred and tens) to partition (split) to help us prepare for converting kilograms and grams.

We played games to help us practice our weighing sills before we use the equipment next week.  There were lots of different types of scales.

Thursday 12th February – Health and Wellbeing (PE)

In the gym hall, we have been doing gymnastics. We have been practicing balances, jumps and rolls. It’s important to land on two feet from a height. On the box, we could use our hands to help us land on our knees or feet after using the springboard.

Outside, we have been working on our rugby skills.  We have been working on passing at waist height with our fingers in a W shape.  We played a match in our last lesson. We used tigs instead of tackles.  We had to run fast and work as a team to pass the ball out of our area and touch it down at the line to win a point.

Friday 30th January – Science

This week, we have been exploring the effects of friction on how far something can move.

We measured how far paper “Dragon Racers” moved on different surfaces when we moved them with air. Most groups discovered that the more bumpy or textured a surface is, the more friction is caused and the Dragon Racer moved a shorter distance.

“Surprisingly, my team got 790cm on the carpet” HA

“Our Dragon Racer went a lot further on the table top because it has a flat surface” LR

“I didn’t think it would go that far on the aluminium foil.” AM

“We placed the Dragon Racer upwards so it would go further than facing downwards.” IR

“I made a prediction about one of the surfaces and in the end my prediction was right.” SS

“I thought the dragon wouldn’t go far on the rug but it did.” IM

“I was very surprised about two of the surfaces.  the rug only went 25cm and the textbook was the furthest.” FS

“Surprisingly it went really far on the tin foil and I thought it wouldn’t go far” FF

Friday 23rd January – Expressive Arts and Numeracy and Maths

This week, we have been focussing on fractions.  We have been using fraction walls to help us find equivalent fractions.  We realised that multiplying by the same number would also give us equivalent fractions.

We finished our block of Drama skills by creating freezeframes and thought tracking to explore fixed and growth mindsets.  Many more of us felt confident to take on a role and speak a character’s thoughts out loud.  We also developed our skills in evaluating and giving feedback to others on their performances.

Friday 16th January – Health and Wellbeing and Expressive Arts

This week, we have been developing our Growth Mindset in Health and Wellbeing.  We wrote a definition of it, and talked about what success means and how we feel when things feel difficult. then, we made Top Trump cards showing our own Growth Mindset scores.

In Expressive Arts, we started some work on Drama skills.  We worked on freeze-framing, which is showing a specific scene starting frozen, moving around silently, and then freezing again.  We explored a poem called “The Loner” and tried to show the emotions in the poem.  Then we used “thought tracking” to put that character in different situations.
