RSPB Big Birdwatch 2023.

We are beginning our new year Outdoor Learning journey by taking part in the RSPB Big Birdwatch and also the Wild Challenge 2o23. At Crookfur Primary, we are very lucky to be surrounded by an environment that is rich in natural habitats and a great variety of bird species. We were amazed at how many different types of birds we were able to see, particularly at this time of year.

Visit to Glasgow Gurdwara.

As part of our learning of the religion of Sikhism in term 1, we had a wonderful time visiting the Glasgow Gurdwara in Pollokshields. Everyone was so welcoming and we were able to appreciate how beautiful this Sikh place of worship is for ourselves. We would also like to thank Mrs McLellan, Mrs Lush and Mr Finlayson for supporting the children on the trip and Mrs Kaur for helping us organise it.

Class Solo Presentations.

We set ourselves a challenge to create a presentation to share our favourite hobby or interest with our class peers. This was to meet the criteria we had made for great talking and listening skills. Everyone gave an super presentation and there were so many different interests to make the presentations fun and informative to the audience.

Outdoor Learning – Viking Village Settlement.

During our Outdoor learning, we decided to re-create an authentic Viking village settlement using some given materials and other natural materials that we foraged from our immediate environment.

We worked in partnership to construct a number of dwelling structures and had a criteria to work towards. Our settlement had to have at least 4 of the main features of a settlement; main communal living, sleeping and eating area, a pen for animals, work implements and leisure area.

What an amazing and successful experience we had together, look at the settlement we made which included a constructed main frame for weaving cloth for clothing garments, cooking area, pen for livestock and living area too!

Viking Food Tasting Test.

We researched the type of food groups the Vikings ate and were very surprised to discover how healthy their diet was. They ate seasonally and had a very balanced approach to growing and cooking nutritional food that gave them plenty of energy and strength.

Of course, we could not resist the chance to try out some of these foods by using our sense of smell, taste and touch to write our own descriptions in our taste test session.

Viking Runes Clay Art.

After we learned and practised using the Viking runic alphabet, we decided to try to make our own runes using clay and acrylic paints.

We loved moulding and manipulating the fast drying clay materials and used a variety of tools to carve out our rune messages. Take a look at our results!

Viking Runes.

As part of our learning of the Vikings we have been investigating their use of Runes as communication. We practised using the runic alphabet and compared this to our own modern English alphabet.

It was great fun creating our own messages using their method and we discovered that the modern symbol used for Bluetooth Wi-Fi was taken from a Nordic Viking prince called Harold Bluetooth.

Design a Maze Problem Solving.

We set ourselves a problem-solving challenge of designing and modelling our own mazes using a variety of materials in our classroom.

An important part of our success criteria was to work collaboratively in groups, sharing our ideas, testing them out practically to make sure they hit all of the points of our design brief.

Everyone has a super time and were fully engrossed in the creative process!

Maths Week – The Beauty in Maths.

For Maths Week Scotland, we discovered the beauty of labyrinths and mazes from around the world. We were amazed by the complexity and detail ordinary people from around the world had gone to create these even in their own gardens. Inspired by these, we decided to design and make our own mazes using wooden blocks and other classroom items.
