Maths

This week with Miss Lamb, the class have been revising the name of 2D shapes and identifying how many sides and corners they have. We were able to use our previous learning to identify whether the corners were right, acute or obtuse angles. We came up with some silly ways to remember their names and how many sides they have.

Hexagon – the ‘x’ is also in the word six – 6 sides

Pentagon – pen for penguin – a cheeky penguin would give you a high five – 5 sides

Octagon – an octopus has eight tentacles – 8 sides

We will be working on 3D shape over the next couple of weeks. Keep your eyes peeled!

Maths

The theme of Maths Week Scotland focussed on the Beauty of Maths. P3C considered where and when we use Maths in real life. They worked with Miss Lamb to create these wonderful tessellations, where 2D shapes were placed together with no overlaps or gaps. The children then chose colours to create a pattern. This involved a lot of concentration and hard work! We think they look beautiful! We got to share our learning at assembly this morning and hear what the other classes got up to.

Woodlands

As part of Maths week the pupils were challenged to look for symmetry outdoors. It was amazing to see how much symmetry is all around us. The pupils even designed their own symmetrical pictures using chalk. The pupils then took on the challenge of creating symmetrical poses with their partner.

Space

As part of our Space Topic and Maths week the pupils constructed their own 3D rockets. We began by discussing features of a rocket and even watched a clip of a rocket launching into space! The pupils were able to identify what shapes we would need to construct our rockets. Next week the pupils will launch their rockets outside to see how far they can go and measure the distance their rockets can travel.  The class were then given a construction challenge during their Soft-Start to create a rocket.
