w.b. 26.09.22 Maths week – The Beauty of Maths

Symmetry

As part of Maths Week we had great fun looking for symmetry in our Woodland and outdoor areas. We sorted objects into symmetrical and asymmetrical piles, and couldn’t believe what we found! Symmetry is all around us – in leaves, flowers and many more. We then worked with a partner to create our own symmetrical pictures using natural materials.

STEMazing challenge

We took part in a live event ran by Anne Okafor who is a Construction planner with the Cruden Group. Our challenge was to build a base to hold as many books as we could. First of all we created 4 columns using triangular shapes, but found the base quickly collapsed with the many corners making it weak. We then tried again using round columns, with us being amazed at how many more books our new design could hold.

Pyramid challenge

After the success of our STEMazing challenge we then had a go at making our own Egyptian pyramids. First of all we made 2 pyramids; 1 square based and 1 triangular based to find out which design was stronger. We found that the square base was sturdier, which helped us then take part in our next challenge which was to build the tallest pyramid we could. This involved lots of trial and error and Miss Muir was delighted with the excellent team working skills and growth mindset attitudes throughout.

W.b. 12.09.22 Word hunts and Pharaohs

Literacy

This week we have been revising the ue, ew and u_e sounds. We had great fun going on a word hunt around our class to find the different words! We have also been continuing our work on alphabetical order and writing our own imaginary stories about our ‘dream’ island.

Numeracy

This week we kept working on rounding numbers to the nearest ten and had fun playing some games to put our skills to the test. We have also been learning to use grid references when finding locations on a map.

Ancient Egypt

As part of this weeks outdoor learning, we had a go at making our own secret messages in hieroglyphics using chalk. Our partner then had to try and decode what we had written!

Some of our class have brought in books to share, which has been fantastic to find out more about Ancient Egypt. This week we have focused on the role of Pharaohs and some famous ones e.g. Cleopatra

Here are some action shots of us working on aiming at a target. We worked on looking at our target and judging how hard to kick/ throw/ roll items depending on how far away they were.

W.b. 05.09.22 Bee-bots and Hieroglyphics

Numeracy

We have continued our directions learning this week and had great fun using the bee-bots to find different places on the map.

You will see us on our right angle hunt in the pictures underneath. We discovered that rectangles and squares have right angles, along with some other shapes.

Ancient Egypt

Some of our boys and girls brought things in to show to help us with our topic learning. We loved talking about the clothes Cleopatra wore, along with looking through some pictures from one of our families trips to Egypt.

In the pictures below we are exploring the Egyptian hieroglyphic alphabet, and had a go at writing our names and secret messages.

The rain didn’t put us off from our P.E. this week! We are making great progress with passing the ball to a partner in a controlled way.

W.b. 29.08.22 Ancient Egypt and Giving Directions

Literacy

This week we have enjoyed getting back to our reading and revising some of our sounds. In the pictures underneath we were revisiting alphabetical order and did a great job with getting everyone in our class into the correct order!

Maths

As well as some more place value revision, we have also been learning how to follow and give directions. Learning our lefts and rights, as well as quarter, half and full turns has helped us with using maps to give our friends directions.

New Topic

We were super excited to start our new Ancient Egypt topic. So far we have learned that Egypt is at the top of Africa and that life was very different 5,000 years ago. In the next few weeks we will be learning all about life in Ancient Egypt and its exciting history.

Yesterday we talked about different sources of information and how they can teach us about the past. Yesterday we became archaeologists, with us looking at different artefacts and thinking about what they could be and who they might have belonged to. We are now going to carry out some research to find out more.

P3A did a fantastic job with keeping control of the ball when dribbling and passing it to a partner. As part of our possession games focus we had a go at ‘piggy in the middle’, with us trying to get the ball past our friend in the middle.

W.b. 22.08.22 Welcome back!

It has been a fun filled first couple of weeks back in P3. We have been busy getting used to our new routines and settling into our new classroom. We made our own tray and peg labels and have enjoyed exploring some of our new play areas.

We have been reminding ourselves of the rights that we have and how important they are to make sure we are happy, safe and healthy. We then used these to think of our responsibilities in class to design our class charter to make sure P3A is a lovely place where we can play,  learn, be heard and be safe.

After a class vote, we decided on a superhero theme for our class charter, where we designed our P3A city and made our very own superheroes.

We blew Miss Muir away with our number work this week, where we were saying and making 3 digit numbers!

Some of our amazing creations so far!
