IDL Blog May

Hi there, it’s Mrs Dougall here with a little update on our P2 Learning Journeys. First of all, apologies for the lack of photos, I’ve had an IT blip!

We have completed our Growing Topic and the children will be bringing their plants home very soon.

I was so impressed with how carefully the children selected their seeds to ensure that they made good companion plants. We were able to use lots of the seeds that the children collected during our Food Waste Learning Journey, so when the pots come home, watch out for the mystery plants and let me know what you manage to cultivate.

We are now well into our Summer Drama and Music Learning journey,  and the children are busy interpreting Summer Stories and learning new summer songs.

IDL Blog February 25

Hi there, it’s Mrs Dougall here. As you may know, I have a different role this year and I am now responsible for Inquiry Based Learning across P2, P3 and P4.  This means that I complete Learning Journeys with the children, starting with a problem/question and working towards them finding a solution using teacher and child led learning across different aspects of the Curriculum for Excellence.   I now teach P2b for 3 periods of IDL and one of PE each week and it is so lovely to be part of their continuing Learning Journeys.

We started the year learning about the Earth’s relationship with the Sun and Moon. We learned the difference between Revolution and Rotation and that the Earth has three main Climate Zones.

We investigated the phases of the moon

We learned the difference between Revolution and Rotation and the children led their learning by discovering Nebula and creating their own Nebulae.

Linked with the Learning Journeys, we have been learning about Meta Skills. These are the skills that we use everyday in our learning and our Meta Skills Lessons help us to investigate the skills, apply them in practical situations and recognise the importance of them in our daily learning. These Meta Skills will help equip the children  for the World of Work.

Our first Meta Skills focus was on Creativity and Curiosity and more recently we have been focused on Communicating and Collaborating.  The class teachers work with us to apply these skills in all of our learning.

During our second Learning Journey we became Food Waste Warriors. We learned about how far some foods travel to get to us and how they grow.

We investigated what happens to food that we waste, especially in our Dinner Hall, set out to educate others in how to waste less food

And we tasted some of the fruits that travel a long way to discover if they still taste good after all of their airmiles.

We finished our Learning Journey with a special visitor who came in to tell us all about how Viridor Waste Management turn our Food Waste into biogas and compost.

Our third learning journey is all about Growing and Planting in a Sustainable way, we are recycling containers and seeds – we are really looking forward to discovering what we can make grow!
