Fabulous Fireworks Writing and a very muddy Mini Mudder! WB: 02.11.20

As usual, we have had a very busy and interesting week in P2b.

We are very lucky to have Miss Geddes in with us for 6 weeks until the 2nd of December, she has really enjoyed getting to know the children and teaching them all about friendships!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for supporting their children to complete homework. I have been really impressed with the effort and standard and the regular practise of Sumdog and Storyworld Common words is making a huge difference to pupils recall and accuracy across Literacy and Numeracy.

I am really looking forward to speaking to you all next week- we hope you enjoy this week’s blog!

 

Literacy

This week we have focused on the diagraph sounds ‘ow’ and ‘oi.’

Numeracy

This week in Numeracy we have been working on missing number calculations. We used a number line to count on and split numbers into part, part, whole. The boys and girls were excellent at writing their calculations neatly in their jotters!

‘You used your jotters and you write the calculation and then you leave a wee box. You figure out the missing number.’-Willow

‘You can use your head or a whiteboard or a number line or hundred square.’-Harry

 

HWB

Miss Geddes has been helping us to learn more about Friendships and what makes a kind friend. This week she read the story of Maisie Me.

The boys and girls then made an example of a ‘kind friend’ and wrote what they would do on a life size cut out. (Thank you Josh!)

IDL Dinosaurs

This week pupils voted on a new IDL topic and have chosen Dinosaurs! We thought about what we already know, and what we would like to learn over the course of our topic. Everyone enjoyed sharing their existing knowledge and reading our new Dinosaur books.

Mini Mudder

Mini mudder was a huge hit today with lots of mud, sliding, laughs and fun!

Halloween Week! WB: 26.10.20

This week we have had lots of fun in p2b with Halloween themed activities!

Speedy Skills

‘There were sweeties with words and if they were right you had to put them in the treat tub and if they were wrong you put them in the trick tub.’- Cameron

‘I was making a potion and I used the cards. It was to make a wizard.’

‘We were playing a game to see who got the most cards. It was subtraction. It was a bit like Around the World.’- Ben

Woodland Cafes, exploring 3D objects and a pizza party! WB: 05.10.20

Welcome to our latest blog!

We have had another fantastic, busy week in Primary 2b- I am sure the boys and girls are ready for a well deserved holiday and a rest now!

 

Speedy Skills

We have had lots of new morning activities to try this week. Noughts and Crosses was a big hit, with pupils having to read their common words before they could choose a space!

‘I was making maths questions and they were a wee bit tricky but I could do them!’- Alexander

IDL- Under the Sea

‘I drew lots of kind of sharks and I was making a poster with information about them.’ -Kayla

We also made an Under the Sea food pyramid!

‘An octopus is a secondary consumer. It eats fish.’- Matthew
‘A crab is a primary consumer. It is an omnivore.’- Aaron

 

 

Literacy

This week everyone received their first reading book of Primary 2! It has been a joy to see everyone’s passion for reading. The children have been working to develop their independence by following a task board and managing their own time when completing follow up jobs.

‘Me and Myles were reading our book. I liked when the mouse ate the cheese.’- Aaron

Our sounds this week have been ‘wh’ and ‘th.’

In writing, we started using our jotters! The boys and girls were challenged to write sentences with; capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and to extend their sentences using ‘and.’

‘I was writing. I had capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.’ – Archie

We have also tried using our new handwriting jotters to practise neat formation!

 

Numeracy

We have had a big focus on naming, identifying and describing 3D objects this week.

The children sorted 2D shapes and 3D objects and labelled them.

‘I was sorting the shapes and  helping  Kayla to write the names of the shapes. My favourite shape is a sphere because it’s round like  circle.’ -Eva

 

We played a game of ‘guess the shape’ pass the parcel!

‘When the music stopped you got to feel in the bag. There were shapes inside and you had to feel them and tell everyone what they felt like and how many sides. Then had to guess what shape it was.’ -Willow

We experimented with shapes to see if they rolled, then sorted them into categories.

‘We were looking to see what things roll and what didn’t roll. Then we put it in the hoops.’ -Rory

We explored the properties of 3D objects and worked in teams to make informative posters!

‘I was putting numbers in the table about the cube. It has 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices.’ – Ethan

Woodland

This week at woodland lots of people were creating their own cafes and menus!

   

‘I was making an ice cream list. It had chocolate, strawberry and vanilla. You could get donuts too.’- Oliver

‘I found a foot shaped log. I think it was from a giant.’- Mia

We had some very brave tree climbers!

‘I put mud on my face because I was being an army man!’- Harry

PE

We have continued to practise our three types of pass this week; bounce, chest and javelin!

 

Reward Afternoon (Pizza Party!)

I am very proud of the hard work and effort everyone has put in these first few weeks, which has resulted in another reward afternoon!

The boys and girls helped to count all of the house tokens in the full jar- there were over 300! That meant that there had been outstanding behaviour, kindness and effort shown over 300 times in the last few weeks- WOW!

‘I was making stacks of ten with the house tokens. We were seeing which group had the most.’ -Amelia

 

This time the children voted to have a ‘pizza party,’ and watched a sea themed movie- Finding Dory!  We made sure we were using equipment safely like graters and knives and worked hard to keep our work station and utensils clean and hygienic.

 

‘I was eating my pizza. I liked the baby peppers.’- Theo

‘ We were making pizzas because we were having a reward for getting the jar full. It was great, we had some orange juice and blackcurrant.’- Zack

Maths Week Scotland Week Beginning 28.09.20

This week was Maths Week Scotland 2020!

This year there was a focus on outdoor maths and we explored lots of exciting concepts like addition, subtraction, measure and shape!

 

Every morning the boys and girls have some ‘speedy skills’ activities and games to try when they come in to class. These were all centred around maths this week.

‘We were trying to balance the scales. You have to make the same number of gems.’- Zack

‘You had to write calculations and they had to have the same answer.’- Cameron

‘You need to double the numbers.’ -Ashley

‘You roll the dice then you double the number. You put a cube on the number.’- Kayla

‘You had to pick a cube and then you had to roll the dice. What you got you move that number. Then you add the number on the dice and the number on the card.’ Charlie

Theo was the winner!

‘You get a calculation on a peg. You have to find the answer. You peg it on the right answer.’ Rayna and Miller

Numicon City

‘You had to put the numicon on to the buildings and match them. Then you count the windows.’ – Ben

‘You had to find the buildings that were the tallest, shortest, widest and had the most windows.’ -Caleb

‘There were cups and you had to figure out if the calculation was true or false. Then you put it in the right cup.’ – Ibrahim

‘You have to find the calculation and then make a tower of the calculation. Then you put it on top to show the answer.’ Josh

‘We were doing the crab drive. Each number on the dice was a part of the crab.’- Rory

‘First you needed to roll a 6 because you had to start with the body.’ -Magnus

‘If you have done all the numbers up to 6 and made a crab then you are the winner.’ -Harry

 

In pairs, the children used natural concrete materials to answer numeracy questions. Once they had the answer they used the numbers to crack the code! Everyone worked so well together, showing excellent focus and team work.

‘You had to crack the code. You had to do the calculations with leaves, sticks and stones. Then you use the answer to crack the code.’- Alexander

‘The code said ‘turtle!’- Archie

Ethan and Matthew worked well as a team to get some house points and crack the code together!

We tried some more speedy skills games and resources later on in the week.

‘I used the shapes to make a gnome. I used a square, a triangle and some rectangles.’ -Aaron

‘You had to get the tokens and put them into one cup. You shake the cups together then see how many is in each cup!’ – Mia

‘You had to put the pom poms at the mirror to see how much it makes. It showed you the double in the mirror.’- Ethan

‘You use the stretchy things (elastic bands) to make stuff like animals.’- Myles

‘You can make squares or rectangles.’- Rayna

On Wednesday, we had a whole day all about measure!

We were thinking about words like tallest and shortest. We measured Miss McCann and Miss Goodwin to see who was the tallest!
We ordered ourselves from tallest to smallest in the class.

‘We put things in order form the longest to the shortest. The aeroplane was the longest.’- Matthew

 

After this we started to explore using a metre stick! We looked for things that were taller than 1m, about 1m and the smaller than 1m.

We then took part in some measure problem solving!

‘There was bridge that you need to go under to go to a party. It was 1m tall. We had to make characters that were smaller than 1m and taller than 1m to see if they could go to the party.’- Harry

 

On Friday morning, we filled in a table about things in the class. In pairs, the children looked for items to measure that were taller than 1m, about 1m and smaller than 1m.

‘My pencil was 13 cm.’- Charlie

‘I was measuring my water bottle. Mine was taller than Ibrahim’s.’- Harley

We linked our measure learning to our Under the Sea topic!
The children helped to order sea creatures in metres from smallest to biggest.

‘You had to start with the smallest sea creature. I was the giant clam.  Then went to the biggest.’- Willow

‘We put them in length order.’- Cameron

Our final Maths Week challenge was to draw our sea creatures to scale outside! In partners, everyone drew their creatures with chalk, wrote how long they were, their name and drew a picture of them!

‘I was working with Kayla to measure how long a whale shark is. It is 18 metres.’- Amelia

When everyone was finished, we took a learning walk to compare the sizes of the creatures! Some boys and girls wanted to lie down to see how big they were next to their sea creature.

‘ We drew a giant clam and it was 1m and 50 cm. The line is the size of the clam. The clam was bigger than Archie.’ – Zack

Sumdog has been a big hit for Maths Week too! Well done to everyone who took part in the competition!

Our last 2 weeks in photos! WB: 14/09/20 and 21/09/20

Primary 2b have worked incredibly hard so far this year. The class have settled in very well and are particularly enthusiastic about our Under the Sea topic! After such a busy first 7 weeks, I hope you have a lovely, restful long weekend. Fingers crossed for good weather!

Numeracy

We have been learning about 2D shapes and 3D objects.

We created our own 2D shape pictures using sticks in the woodland.

‘Me and Rayna were building a square with sticks.”- Sofia

‘We used triangles and squares to build a house.’- Magnus

‘We made  a house. We used sticks and stones. It was from triangles and squares and rectangles.’- Kayla and Amelia

 

We went out to the playground and woodland to search for 3D objects! We recorded our findings on a sheet with a partner.

‘ I found a ball- it was a sphere.’ – Archie

‘ I found a big log it was a cylinder.’ – Mia

‘I found a tree, it was a cylinder too.’ – Cameron

 

We have also been working on addition strategies. We have learned some ways to add 10!

’10 + 0= 10′ – Ethan

‘ 10 + 1= 11′ – Charlie

We played a game together to help us add 10. We know that the second digit does not change.

’36 + 10= 46.’ – Harry

‘I was playing the train game and you had to add it up and press the answer.’ – Alexander

 

Literacy

The children have been working so hard to practise writing stories and sentences. They have been choosing to write lots of their own stories at our writing table- I am sure they will all make excellent authors one day!

We have been revising lots of diagraph sounds. The boys and girls are brilliant at creating their own words during active spelling time!

 

 

IDL

Last week, Cameron was the Tiny teacher, sharing his knowledge and love for sea turtles!

We learned a bit about what turtles eat, how big they are, and where they live!

 

‘Turtles can eat jellyfish without getting stung.’- Myles

We have been learning all about food chains. We know that: ‘ The sun gives the plants energy.’ – Eva We started off by sorting animals by what they eat! the boys and girls favourite were the om nom omnivore- they eat everything!

 

‘Humans are at the top of the food chain.’ – Magnus

‘I made my own food chain. The sun gives the grass energy. The worm eats the grass and the bird eats the worm.’ – Ibrahim

 

We made our own beautiful under the sea pictures.

We painted the background and used white crayons to make waves. Then we stuck ourselves on to look like divers! We added our favourite sea creatures.

 

‘I added a seahorse because I like them.’ – Ashley

‘I added a megladon because they were the biggest creatures to ever live.’ – Ben

‘ I was very good at cutting my creatures out.’ – Matthew

 

Thank you again to the adults and pupils who have sent in photos via google classroom or brought in lovely sea themed crafts, pictures and stories! Pupils have enjoyed sharing them with their friends and they provide an invaluable link to personal experiences to help us understand even more about Under the Sea!

 

 

Outdoor Learning

Our recent outdoor exploring has been very imaginative and exciting!

We had a worm hospital, tyre races, den building, climbing and swinging too! It was fabulous to see the children assessing their own risks and using the materials to create their own games.

 

 

PE

We have been very lucky to have Tony from Active Schools has been delivering a block on ball skills and passing with us on  a Tuesday in the MUGA.

P2b Clever clogs blog! Week Beginning 07/09/20

Literacy

We have been learning some new diagraph sounds. This week we focused on ‘ai’ and ‘oa.’‘I was spelling ‘goat.’- Mia

We read Chicken Licken and were thinking about rhyming words.

Numeracy

We have been revising 2D shapes.

‘A hexagon has 6 corners and 6 sides.’- Josh

Then we went outside to look for 2D shapes. We worked in pairs and drew pictures of what we found. Then we shared them with our friends.

‘We found a P1 sign that was a square.’ Charlie and Ben

‘The MUGA gate was a rectangle.’ Matthew

Outdoor Learning

We have spent lots of time outside this week. We took part in some imaginative play out in our P2 garden.

‘I was playing the floor is lava. I used tyres and benches and I couldn’t touch the floor.’- Caleb

‘I was making a blackcurrant ice cream. It cost £5000!’ Theo

‘I was watching Rayna pour the mud cake.’- Amelia
‘We made a cafe and Ethan was the customer. He wanted to eat the chocolate cake and drink coffee’- Eva

In the MUGA we played lots of Under the Sea themed games.

Under the Sea IDL topic

We have been very busy this week! The boys and girls chose to learn about sharks!

‘Sharks eat fish.’ -Oliver

 

Willow and Magnus brought in some bones from the beach in Millport to show everyone! They got to be the tiny teachers and share their knowledge with the class.

‘There were bird bones. They were very good.’ Myles

‘They felt a bit like glass or a shell.’- Mia

 

Theo was sharing his knowledge about sharks and Krakens!

‘A Kraken could make scars on the megladon with the suction cups.’- Aaron

We made under the sea puppets of all the creatures we have learned about. The boys and girls then created a puppet show in our under the sea den.

‘Me and Aaron were using the puppets to do the puppet show.’- Ibrahim

‘It was really funny.’-Kayla

 

The children chose to put some sea and water themed material round our den! We then added books about sea creatures and pirates.

We had an arts and crafts afternoon where the children chose to make fish, sharks, crabs and even scary jellyfish! We then hung them inside the den with a beautiful painted sea background.

‘This is a Portuguese Man O’War jellyfish. They are the biggest jellyfish.’ – Ben

‘I made a fish mask. I cut it out.’ Ashley

We had lots of fun playing with our sea creatures in the sparkly water!

 

Our Exciting Week! 30/08/20

This week in P2b we have spent lots of time outside and solving problems through building challenges!

Outside, pupils used pipes, water and containers to create a water slide.

‘ I was putting the boat in the bucket to slide it down.’ Ibrahim

‘It was like a water slide through the tunnel.’ Harry and Magnus

 

Sofia found a worm and was brave enough to pick it up!

‘I found a worm in the mud- it felt weird. I liked the long one better.’

‘I found a caterpillar, mostly it tickled.’ -Mia

 

The pupils chose to create a reading den/stage with some cardboard tubes. They all worked together to strengthen the tubes, choose materials and find solutions when it kept falling down!

‘ We used cable ties, cardboard tubes, cellotape, material and string.’ Charlie and Rory

They managed to finish it on Wednesday and attached it to our role play area. We are very pleased with the finished product!

‘It’s awesome because I can pretend it is a fort.’ -Matthew

‘I was under the den reading Monkey Puzzle. I was happy because the leaf made the den green.’ Charlie

In Numeracy, we have been using lots of concrete materials to solve and create our own addition problems.

We have learned to put the big number first and count on using a number line.

‘I was colouring in a butterfly. I added both numbers together to find the colour.’ Caleb

‘We matched the calculations to the numbers on the robots. There was a number line at the bottom.’ Rory

In Literacy we were checking our sentences for capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. We used picture prompts to write sentences then challenged ourselves to draw our own pictures on the back and write a sentence about them!

Pupils voted at the end of last week for a new IDL topic and have chosen Under the Sea! Some pupils helped to create a beautiful sea front cover for our big book.

Here is all the exciting information the pupils knew about Under the Sea already.

We then thought about what we would like to find out and are using this to plan our learning together. We will start on Monday by learning about some exciting sea creatures!
