IDL Blog January 2025

Hi there, as you may know, I have a different role this year and I am now responsible for Inquiry Based Learning across P2, P3 and P4.  This means that I complete Learning Journeys with the children, starting with a problem/question and working towards them finding a solution using teacher and child led learning across different aspects of the Curriculum for Excellence.   I now teach P2a for 3 periods each week and it is so lovely to be part of their continuing Learning Journeys.

We started the year learning about the Earth’s relationship with the Sun and Moon. We learned the difference between Revolution and Rotation and that the Earth has three main Climate Zones

We investigated the Phases of the Moon

And how the Earth’s tilt, revolution and rotation create the Seasons and change the length of our days.

We then moved onto a short block of learning about Meta Skills, these are the skills that we use everyday in our learning and our Meta Skills Lessons help us to investigate the skills, apply them in practical situations and recognise the importance of them in our daily learning. These Meta Skills will help equip the children  for the World of Work.

Our first Meta Skills focus was on Creativity and Curiosity and we are currently focusing on Communicating and Collaborating.  The class teachers work with us to apply these skills in all of our learning.

Our second Learning Journey turned us all into Food Waste Warriors.  We have discovered that Food Waste can be recycled to produce compost or biogas and we have worked with Sylvia our Catering Manager to educate the children in the school about what should be placed in the food waste bins and to encourage our peers to waste less food .

We investigated where around the world our fruit comes from and how it travels. We learned that different fruits grow in lots of different ways and need different climates to help them grow. We have been collecting seeds and stones from lots of different varieties of fruits and vegetables and will use these in our next Learning Journey.

Over the next few weeks, we will continue to work on developing our Meta Skills and will then move onto our new Learning Journey, I am sure that the children will be keen to share this with you as soon as the new journey is announced!
