Eric’s Swimwear, Henri Matisse and Planting

In amongst the sunshine, we have had a very exciting week. We attended the Celebration of Achievement assembly and also met our new teacher.

We have continued learning about the life cycle of a plant and discussing what a plant needs to survive. We planted our own sunflower seeds this week and will bring them home to watch them grow over the summer. We know they need sunlight, water and soil to help them grow.

We also enjoyed some time outside on Friday afternoon in the woodland.

We have been reading ‘Eric Makes a Splash’ and enjoyed creating some swimwear which Eric would like to wear in the swimming pool. Eric feels worried about going in the pool so some new swimwear might help him with his worries. We then tested different materials to see how waterproof they are and discussed which material would be the best for Eric’s swimwear.

We are taking part in a writing compeition and this week wrote our own entries into the competition. We were given the start of the story and then completed the story based on the pictures and our wonderful imaginations.

We have been learning about the artist Henri Matisse and this week created our own artwork based on his skill of painting with scissors. We used coloured paper and scissors to create our own designs.

Bee-Bots, Talking Tins and More!

We have had another busy week in P1C!

We enjoyed exploring the Bee-Bots this week. We had to use our knowledge of position and direction to move the Bee-Bots to different areas on the carpet and mats. We had great fun joining in a dance to help us remember the terms left, right, forward, backwards and turning.

In Literacy and English, we have enjoyed reading our reading  books into the talking tins. We love playing it back and hearing how we sound when reading which helps us to practice our fluency.

We have also been working hard to use our sounds to help us spell words.

We have enjoyed some problem solving in Maths this week. We had to listen carefully to the instructions and work out where to place each character on the bus stop.

We also love counting in 2s!

Outdoors this week, we enjoyed building, cooking and sunbathing!

Sports Week

Mrs Agnew and Miss Regan are incredibly proud of P1C this week. So proud that they have taken far too many photos however they capture this week very well 🙂

We have taken part in so many different sports and all had lots of fun on sports day. Well done to everyone who took part! One of the most exciting parts of the week was having the chance to hold a real 2022 Commonwealth Games medal.

Each day we have been taking part in a Daily Challenge (ask us to show you our front and back support holds) and also looked at videos of well known sports people performing their sport!

Open Afternoons and Magic Carpet Rides

Thank you to all of the parents and carers who attended our Open Afternoons. We hope you enjoyed exploring the classroom with the children. They were extremely excited to share their learning with you and show you the areas that they particularly enjoy!

As part of our learning about the countries of the world, the children were interested to learn about flags. We explored various flags and their features and discussed why countries had flags. Using flag designs to prompt us, we created our own flags and proudly displayed them in our classroom.

P1 went on a magic carpet ride on Thursday afternoon. They landed in different lands and had to move their body to show they type of land they were in. There was wiggling like jelly, visiting of Candy Land and squelching through a marsh land. They also flew to space on their magic carpet!

During writing we thought about a magic carpet ride we would like to go on and wrote about. We had to think of a land we would like to visit and describe it using adjectives.

This week some of us have been developing our sequencing skills. After reading our book, we created a story map to show our understanding of the story. We discussed the beginning, middle and end of the story and drew a picture to explain each part.

This week we took a break from the apparatus and focused on our balancing skills in Gymnastics. We practised some of the balances we had previously learned and then built on this to create some very challenging balances. We had to communicate and cooperate with our partner to ensure our balances were a success!

We spent a lovely afternoon in the sun on Friday exploring the woodland area. We built dens, swung on trees and tyres and spent a lot of time digging for fossils! There aren’t many photos as Mrs Agnew and Miss Regan enjoyed making daisy chains and making beautiful hair pieces from the flowers found on the ground 🙂

Countries of the World and P1 Garden!

It has been another busy week in Primary 1C!

We have been really enjoying learning about the different continents of the world and their climates. We colour coded a map based on the temperature and added animals to the map based on where they would live.  We have discussed the habitats of animals all over the word and how they can differ. We also found out lots of cool facts about many animals from around the world.

In Numeracy and Maths, we have been continuing to work on our addition and subtraction calculations. We enjoyed making our own calculations for our friends to solve.

In PE, we had our last session of Gymnastics and showed off our amazing balancing skills while using various equipment.  We have really enjoyed our block of Gymnastics and we think we have some Team Scotland Gymnasts in the making!

We have also been working hard to tidy up our P1 garden. We are wanting to give our garden a little bit of a makeover and this week we started by weeding and tidying up different areas in our garden. We can’t wait to watch our garden develop over the next few weeks.

Police, Whales and the Coronation

Last week we enjoyed a visit from our Campus Police Officer, PC Mitchell. Before the holiday we were learning about people who help us. We had lots of questions ready for PC Mitchell and were mostly interested in her uniform and where she gets it from. We loved her demonstration with the handcuffs on Miss Regan!

Our story of the week has been The Snail on the Whale. As you will see from our faces we loved completing an experiment to see how whale blubber works. We put our hands into cold water for as long as we could and then tried this again with Vaseline on our hands. The Vaseline acts as an insulator, the same way blubber does for a whale. We could then hold our hands in the cold water for longer!

We are coming to the end of our block of Gymnastics. We have learned lots about different ways of moving, jumping and balancing on various types of equipment.

On Friday we learned about The King’s Coronation both in class and in assembly. We enjoyed listening to the story, The King’s Pants and then had lots of fun designing a new pair of pants for The King. We have also been decorating crowns and during our writing lesson we created our own crown and then wrote about it using some amazing adjectives!

We enjoyed some time exploring in the woodland on Friday afternoon and also threw our seed bombs which we made the previous week. Fingers crossed some beautiful flowers appear soon!

Eid Celebration

We have had an amazing day celebrating Eid! Over the past couple of weeks we have been learning about Ramadan and Eid and wished our friends Eid Mubarak last week. Today we got to see lots of the things we have learned about in practise and particularly enjoyed making some tasty chocolate strawberries and dates. We hope you enjoy the photos below which show how fun our day has been!

We all looked amazing in our outfits…

We created pictures of mosques with chalk and enjoyed using playdough to make various creations related to Ramadan and Eid.

We started our day of activities by visiting the open area which had some lovely stories for us to explore and teddies to dress in an outfit suitable for an Eid celebration.

We were very excited to receive our Mehndi and delighted to show our design to each other.

We then decorated a moon crescent with tissue paper. We have been learning about the importance of the moon to Ramadan and Eid.

The highlight was making chocolate strawberries and dates. We loved dipping them into the chocolate and were very excited to eat them after school.

Thank you very much to our parent helpers and all of the staff who helped make this day amazing!

3D Shapes and Seed Bomb Fun!

We have had a great week in P1C! It has been so lovely being back together again after the Easter Holidays. We began our week writing all about our Easter Holidays and then we shared our writing with our friends during Circle Time. We have also been working hard consolidating our sounds and common words this week.

In Numeracy and Maths this week, we continued to learn about 2D and 3D shapes. We looked at the features of 2D and 3D shapes and we had a go at creating different 3D shapes using the sticks and balls. Some of us created different models using the 3D shapes.

In Maths this week, we have also been exploring numbers up to 50. We had to find the missing numbers from the number strips and had to use the magnifying glass to find different numbers.

For Earth Day, we discussed the importance of looking after our planet. We decided to create our own seed bombs to throw in our garden. To make our seed bombs we had to rip recycled paper up into really small pieces and soak it in water. Once it was ready we carefully put it in the blender and then made little balls from our mixture so that we could add our seeds. We are now letting them dry and can’t wait to plant them in our garden.

Easter Fun

What a week of Easter fun we have had in P1C this week. We began our week learning about The Easter Story and demonstrated our sequencing skills by putting the pictures of the story in order. We discussed what Easter means to us and different ways Easter can be celebrated.

We loved demonstrating our creative side by decorating some eggs and colouring in our own.

We designed our own Easter cards and then wrote them to a special person. We discussed how we write a card and what is important to include in a card.

In Numeracy and Maths we have been learning about 2D shapes and 3D objects. We have been exploring the features of shapes and explored what 3D objects can stack and roll. Some of us created pictures with 2D shapes whilst others had a go at building a model with 3D objects.

We had a lovely morning on Friday exploring the garden and then enjoyed a short film on Friday afternoon as a treat.

We hope everyone has a lovely break and we look forward to seeing you and hearing what you did when you return to school.

Gymnastics, Superworm and Minibeasts

Superworm is super strong! We have really enjoyed our story of the week and have been completing lots of activities around this story. On Monday we went on a Minibeast hunt in the woodland and the garden areas around the school. We didn’t find many butterflies or bees but we did manage to find worms, spiders, flies and woodlice.

On Tuesday we created our own superworm by collecting our own stick from outside and then decorating it and adding some googly eyes!

On Wednesday during gymnastics we focused on balancing and control. We completed handstands against the wall, forward and backward rolls, balancing across an obstacle and also a jump of our choice off the springboard. We also showed we could use the equipment safely by following some careful instructions.

During Literacy this week some of us have been focusing on our sounds by drawing something beginning with that sound. We have also been building our own words with a sound and then drawing a picture of that. In writing, we wrote about what we did at the weekend and followed our rules of writing by making sure we had a capital letter at the start of our sentence, a full stop at the end and a finger spaces between each of the words.

In Mathematics this week some of us have been creating our own bar graph based on the data from our workbook.

We have also been learning about capacity and created our own water xylophone. We could describe if each glass was full, nearly full, nearly empty or empty.

Some of us went outside to play a game to help us learn to add three numbers together. We each had three balls and had to put each of them into a different hoop. Each hoop was worth an amount and we then added up the three numbers to get our total.

Some of us created our own number line in the playground with chalk and then challenged each other by completing an addition calculation on the number line. We were also able to demonstrate our addition skills by jumping along a number line with a counter.
