Developing the garden

The learning continued outdoors despite the weather, making the most of exploring our garden area. The children have lots of ideas of how they can develop the space to meet their interests and we have a list of what we would like to work on together. Here are some photos of our time outdoors this week.

Learning outdoors

Last week we took lots of our learning outdoors in our garden and woodland area. We made repeating patterns with natural resources, yummy recipes in the mud kitchen, syllable jumps, vehicles and houses out of loose parts and searched for mini beasts. It was lots of fun and was great to get out and enjoy the good weather. Here are some snaps of the fun…

Jack and the beanstalk

We have had lots of fun exploring our story of the week, Jack and the Beanstalk, which we have used to explore some new vocabulary (sparkle words) including ravenous, clambering and shocked.

We used the story as a stimulus for drawing club and this week introduced a magic button in our pictures which if pressed, enabled something magical or unusual to happen. There were lots of traps, secret weapons and imaginative ideas shared if somebody dared to press their magic button.

After looking at some different pictures of castles and talking about the design of them we built some of our own in our play.

Have a great weekend!

Shape hunt

This week we went on a shape hunt outdoors to see what 2D and 3D shapes we could find. Mrs Denholm was very impressed at how many we spotted and that we remembered the names for each of them. If you are out and about I wonder if you could spot any more…

Have a great weekend!

Shape

This week we have been developing our understanding of 2D and 3D shapes. We have discussed the properties of a cone, cube, cuboid, cylinder and sphere and enjoyed using these in some of our building designs. We have recapped the names of common 2D shapes including a circle, square, rectangle and triangle and have played a variety of games to sort and match them. We found the shape monsters made a funny noise when they ate the right shape.

Enjoy your weekend! See you all next week.

Listening skills, memory and number sense

This week our focus has been on developing our listening skills and visual memory through games. We listened to how many words were in a sentence and tried to jump for each word. We played a memory game where one item was removed and we had to try and remember what it was and we played spot the difference between two visuals.

We have continued to develop our understanding of number using the number blocks to help us.

Have a lovely weekend.

Fun in week 1

We have had a great start to P1 with all of the children settling well and getting used to our classroom routines. It has been great to see them exploring and making new friendships as they play. Here is a wee snapshot of some of the fun we have had this week making birthday cards, building zoos, playing with the babies, listening walks and tapping to the beat with the musical instruments.

I hope everyone has a well deserved rest and I look forward to seeing lots of smiley faces on Monday.
