Clay characters

This week we enjoyed making characters from clay based on our story of the week ‘The Gruffalo’. The children showed creativity and perseverance to get their character into the shape they wanted. They used the tools well to add intricate details and learnt about patience waiting for them to fully dry to take them home.

Our shortbread adventure

Last week our classroom smelled like a bakery as we attempted to make our very own shortbread after learning about Scottish food and drinks.

Working together, we looked carefully at the recipe to ensure our measurements were just right. We took turns to make sure everyone had a chance to lead and tried to mix and knead the dough until it became the perfect consistency.

Our first batch was a bit of a learning curve (little crumbly) but that didn’t stop us. We tried to work out what went wrong, adjusted our technique and our second batch turned out golden, crumbly and resembled shortbread much to Mrs Denholm’s relief and delight.
Here are some pictures of the bakers in action.

Enjoy the weekend! It sounds like there are lots of lovely plans and some birthdays being celebrated. Can’t wait to hear all about them on Monday.

COLOURS

We have been learning all about colour as part of Art & Design over the last few weeks.  This links nicely to our French learning where we can recognise and say most of the colours in French.  We made a class colour wheel with things from our classroom.  We made our own colour wheels.  We learned that mixing two primary colours makes a secondary colour and looked at where these go in the colour wheel.  Next we looked at hot and cold colours.  We are going to use cold and hot colours in a piece of art work which we started this week and are looking forward to finishing off in our next few lessons.  Below you will see us matching French colour words to the right colour and playing colour splat.

Outdoor learning

Last week we started learning about using tally marks to record data in a quick way. The children were able to think of some questions they wanted to find out the answers to for example what is P1b’s favourite flavour of ice cream? with an overwhelming result favouring chocolate.

We enjoyed a Scottish story in the garden enjoying our snacks and talking about the new Scottish words we have learnt including loch, wee and lassie.

We also found time to build a swamp, a Jurassic park, do a spot of hula hooping and collaborative art.

Remember to bring back the outdoor clothes for this Wednesday!
