Our Final P1 Blog

We have had a very busy end to Primary 1 with lots of exciting activities happening.

On Monday we spent our PE time with our P6 buddies. The P6s organised some games for us and the game of ‘rock, paper, scissors, shoot’ proved very popular. We loved spending time with our buddies!

Whilst we had completed our learning about our community we received an invitation to write postcards to a local care home and we  agreed this was a nice way to give something back to our community. We discussed what we were looking forward to doing over the summer holidays and wrote this on the postcard. We also drew a colourful picture which we are sure the residents of the care home will love.

This term we have been learning about the artist Wassily Kandinsky. We have explored his work and last week we had a go at creating our own piece of work based on his painting  ‘Squares and Concentric Circles’

Finally, thank you to all of our parents and carers for your support this year. I hope you all have a lovely summer holiday ☺️

More Thank You Letters and Junk Modelling

We have now delivered all of our thank you letters to people who help our community.

Last weekend, the librarians received letters from us to say thank you for helping us find the book we wanted, keeping the books on offer in the library fun and interesting and for inviting us to the library last year for Book Week Scotland.

We visited the Lollipop Lady to say thank you for keeping us safe and helping us cross the road.

On Monday, the Campus Police Officer based at Eastwood High School came to visit to receive his thank you letters. He was able to stay so we could ask some questions and we were particularly interested in his uniform and the various items attached to his belt.

Mr Weir has very kindly delivered the letters to the bin men to say thank you for keeping our school and streets clean and for helping to recycle the rubbish they collect.

Over the last week we have had a junk modelling area within the class. This was initially linked to our learning about space however the children have demonstrated their creativity a variety of models including musical instruments.

Also linked to our learning about space was our writing this week. We read part of the story ‘The First Hippo on the Moon’. We then had to write what happened next have Sheila blasted into space in the rocket she made with the other animals. We haven’t had a chance to read the rest part of the story so will find out next week what happened next to Sheila!

Sports Day

We all had an amazing time taking part in Sports Day on Thursday. We had so much fun completing all of the stations and there were plenty of smiles all round despite the rain!

Well done to the three boys and three girls who took a place in the race but I’m sure you will all agree that everyone ran really well and it was lovely to see such good sportsmanship amongst the children!

Well done everyone and thank you to all of our parents and carers for cheering us on ☺️

Our Community Walk

On Tuesday we enjoyed a very wet walk to the post office and the Co-Op on Harvie Avenue. We have been learning about our community and thinking about the people who help us, this included shopkeepers and people who deliver and help us send letters and parcels. We delivered our thank you letters to both places and even got to ask some questions to the staff working in the Co-Op.

Thank you to our parent helpers for joining us on the walk and also to the staff at both the post office and the Co-Op for being so accommodating.

We still have some more thank you letters to deliver to the library (thank you to one of our parents for doing this), the lollipop lady, a police officer and the bin men which we will hand over next week in school ☺️

Music and Space

Over the past couple of weeks we have been learning about music. The main focus is thinking about how music makes us feel. Last week we listened to a piece of music. We didn’t know  anything about the music but had to listen carefully and imagine what we thought the music was about. We then had to draw our idea! We were very excited to find that the song was about a firebird who had been captured and was then freed!

We all really enjoyed the piece of music and some of us created our own dance which we then performed to others in the class.

This week we focused on our emotions and how different music can make you feel a certain way. We discussed the different tempo in music, the instruments we could hear and also the lyrics. All of these things can make us feel a certain emotion. Some music makes us feel happy and excited whilst other songs can make us feel scared or sad! One piece of music made us feel calm and it was even described as feeling like a big hug!

This week we started learning about Space. One thing we wanted to find out about was what makes it become day and night. We watched a short video which explained how the earth moves and when certain parts face the sun it is day time. We then created our own diagram of this and labelled it to show our understanding. Some of us have travelled as far as Australia before and enjoyed sharing their experience of it being day time there when it is night time here! We were able to see this on this on the globe!

Last week we created our own bar charts to display some data we collected about the class. We were all asked our favourite animals and then used tally marks to record this. We then used this information to build a bar chart with cubes. We had to think about the data and the numbers on the bar chart.

Gymnastics and Our Community

In PE this term we have been focusing on Athletics and Gymnastics.

In Gymnastics we have been learning  a different skill each week. We have practised balancing, jumping and rolling and this week put all of these skills together.

We have learned that there are lots of different ways we can balance with our body and also different ways we can jump. It is also important to land safely when we jump!

As part of our learning about the community, we have been discussing all of the different people who help us in our community. This includes librarians, refuse collectors, shopkeepers and the lollipop lady who helps us cross the road before and after school. As a class, we have selected six roles in our community who we would like to say thank you to.

This week, we split into small groups and each looked at one of the roles. We discussed how this person helps us and what could happen to our community if we didn’t have them.

We would like to write thank you letters to each of these roles within our community and started by drawing a picture to go with the letter. Next week, we will have a go at writing the letter and we hope to deliver these to most of the people the following week.

Numeracy & Maths and Earth Day

Over the past couple of weeks we have been learning about 3D objects. We have been discussing how they are different to 2D shapes and learning about the different features of each 3D object.

We explored if each of the 3D objects could stack, slide or roll!

We were challenged to solve some problems involving horizontal and vertical numbers lines. We had to work out how many jumps somebody had made on the number line but we were only given some clues to help us solve it. We worked in small groups and also had to think about communicating with each other.

We have also been practising our number bonds to help build our knowledge of numbers. We had to find as many different ways as we could to make a certain number.

Last week, we were learning about Earth Day with Mrs Dickie. We created our own planet earth from salt dough and this week we painted them blue and green. They still aren’t quite dry but we are looking forward to bringing them home next week.

We are becoming more and more creative with our buildings in Primary 1 and challenging ourselves with very impressive structures and unique designs. We love to use the loose parts to add detail to our buildings.

Eid Celebration

On Friday we took part in our whole school celebration to celebrate Eid. It was so lovely to see the children in their traditional or party dress and we took part in lots of exciting activities across the day.

Some of us had a go at building a Mosque in our construction area. We previously discussed the different areas of a Mosque and the features of the building and  had some pictures in our construction area to give us ideas!

We also had a go at drawing round our own hands and decorating them with our own Mehndi. Some of us shared our designs at assembly.

Many of us then got the real thing on our hands and had to wait patiently for it to dry. We are sure you will agree that our hands looked beautiful as we left school!

Mrs Amin very kindly came into school today and made chocolate chip cookies with us. We had to look at our ingredient list, measure out the correct amount of each ingredient and use the whisk to mix it all together. The cookies were then taken to the ovens to be baked and brought home today to be enjoyed. Thank you Mrs Amin!

We ended our afternoon with some Bollywood dancing. Some of us were

Eid and Easter

At the beginning of this week some children in our class celebrated Eid with their families. In class, we watched  a video to learn how families prepare and celebrate Eid. The children then shared with the class what they did with their families and it was lovely to see the beautiful detail in the Mehndi on the girls’ hands.

We have also been learning about Easter in class. Mrs Dickie has taught us the Easter Story and we completed a sequencing activity to show our understanding of this. This helped us to understand why Christians celebrate Easter and we explored various ways in which Easter is celebrated.

We decorated our own Easter eggs in class and we’re very excited to bring the home.

As it is feeling well and truly like Spring, we decided to have a go at painting some Spring flowers. We had pictures of some Spring flowers to give us some ideas but the display below demonstrates how creative we can be in P1B!

We continued learning about different ways to display data. At the beginning of the week we completed a Carroll Diagram. We then explored various bar charts and interpreted the data on them. We had a go at completing our own bar charts too.

Wishing you all a lovely break and a very happy Easter!

Our Learning Continued with Mrs Dickie

After we had our visit from Rennie, The Dams to Darnley Ranger we carried out some  drawing and writing about some facts that we had learned.

We then carried out some observational drawings on birds trying to really focus on the different shapes and colours that we could see and add as much detail as we could.

We used our bird watching tally mark results to create a class pictogram to find out which bird we spotted the most of overall.  The gull was spotted the most in the Crookfur Playgrounds!

We used IPADs to enhance our learning by using google to search for information about birds. The children enjoyed talking about different images they could find.

Over the last couple of weeks we have learned more about different ways we can help look after the environment to help make a better world. The children carried out some litter picking down at Woodland which they thoroughly enjoyed!

After Easter, we will be continuing learning more about sustainability!
