Sports Day, Diversity Week, Phases of the Moon and Measuring/Weighing

Last week, we had a fantastic time during Sports week. If you haven’t already, check our google classroom to watch our Sports Day Video.

Here are some other pictures from Sports Day!

To decorate our MUGA for sports day, we painted HUGE posters!

In Maths, we have been exploring non-standard units to measure and weigh objects. We used paper clips, cubes and pencils! We were creative in the objects that we measured and weighed. Have a look!

To celebrate Diversity week, we created paintings using henna, we learnt about flags across the world and we learnt about foods from around the world such as Roti.

With Miss Burdge, we made bracelets and necklaces using clay. We explored the variety of jewellery that is worn by people around the world such as Mexico, France and India.

During our Woodland experiences, we went on a Mini-Beast hunt.

Our Space topic has came to an end. Before we finished, we learnt about the phases of the moon.

We are nearly at the end of Primary One. How did this time come by so fast! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and look forward to your last week of Primary One!

Our Space Topic and Global Festival Week!

Throughout our Space topic, we have been exploring the Solar System and more!

Miss Amin gave us a challenge to create a rocket using 2D Shapes. We had to solve which pieces work together to form a rocket.

With perseverance, we did it!

We used our imagination to create amazing stories. After we read ‘The First Hippo on the Moon’ by David Walliams, we wrote our own story and pretended to be a Hippo. We used tricky words and used openers to link our ideas together.

Using chalk and a variety of art techniques, we created our own Nebulla. A Nebulla is a cloud of dust and gas which begins to form a star.

Using our imagination, we created our own Spaceships! After learning about the International Space Station in Nasa, we wanted to create our own. We created signs, labels and read non-fiction books within our Space Station dens.

It took teamwork, patience, communication and super problem solving skills!

We came to school one day and realised Miss Amin had put a pump within our tuff spot! We created a stable and safe structure around the pump to ensure it does not fall.

We played, told stories and extended our vocabulary whilst exploring under the sea fishes!

To celebrate our Global Festival Week, we explored a variety of cultures, traditions and religions.

We used Playdough to re-create traditional ‘Chapattis’.

During our Eid Party we learnt about Bollywood Dancing. Thanks to P3a, we had the opportunity to practise our Bollywood dance moves again.

Not only that, we read Scottish Stories and learnt how to write some words in Urdu! Lastly, we created flags from around the world.

It was lovely learning about different cultures. We can’t wait to see what else we will learn about!

On Monday we have our class photos, therefore, we will not have outdoor learning or PE on Monday! Have a great weekend superstars!

Planting and Learning Alternative Sounds

It might be a short week, but we have had a busy week full of learning!

Over the last few weeks, we have been exploring Plants. We have planted sunflower seeds and cress seeds.

We have also learnt about the life cycle of plants! Everyday, we come to our garden centre to water the plants and to observe if they have had any changes.

We have been working on securing our knowledge for 2D and 3D shapes. We have been comparing and contrasting their properties.

Everyday we do speedy calculations for addition and subtraction to help our mental maths skills!

We are becoming more confident to recognise the time for o’clock and half past.

In the tuff spot, we have revisited how to weigh objects. We were comparing objects that were the lightest and heaviest.

In Literacy, we continue to explore phonemes and their alternative sounds!

We went on a sound hunt! We had to find things in our classroom that matched the sounds on our worksheet.

We have authors and illustrators in our class! We created our own posters and guess what – we were the illustrators!

What a busy week it has been! We cannot wait for the long weekend. Have a great holiday everyone. See you on Tuesday!

Ramadan and Eid Celebrations, Space and Exploring Eggs!

Welcome back to our blog! Have you watched our assembly about Ramadan and Eid? If not, you are able to watch it by clinking the link on our Google Classroom stream!

During the last few weeks, everyone has loved learning about Ramadan and Eid. We have explored what Ramadan is about, fasting, traditional clothing and foods. We have also learnt about Eid!

We have began our Space topic! We are enjoying exploring our questions that we wish to answer throughout our topic.

We have learnt about all of the planets in the solar system: their sizes, their temperature and how long it takes for them to orbit.

We have been finding information independently in non-fiction books! We use the contents page to help us locate information.

Using our imagination, we have created a fact file about our own planet! We had to organise information correctly to describe our planet using tricky words.

Then, we created our own Alien that lived on our imaginative planet!

In the role-play, we worked together to create a control panel for our spaceship!

We love sensory play! We used shaving foam to explore, discuss and form Space vocabulary such as nebula, asteroids and rocket.

Eggs! You might be thinking, why eggs? It sparked great conversation and questions! We have been exploring foods from around the world and animals. We were exploring the difference between caged eggs and free range eggs.

After, we participated in a science experiment to determine whether an egg was fresh or not.

We also learnt the difference between the egg white and yolk and practised cracking and separating an egg.

We observed what happened to the egg yolk once we whisked it. We were surprised that the egg yolk turned from a liquid to a foamy hard mixture! Maybe next time we will make meringues using the egg whites!

Wow! What a busy week it has been! See you soon on our next blog!

Have a great weekend everyone!xx

Alternative Sounds, Ramadan, Creating Animal Holes!

Another busy week in Primary 1!

We continue to explore non-fiction texts to find new information and interesting facts. We are becoming secure at being able to use the contents page to locate information, now we are beginning to learn about the index page!

We have began learning about alternative sounds. This week we focused on the different ways you can make the ai sound.

We made flowers and filled them with different ai words!

As we are building an awareness of alternative sounds, it is important that we can easily recognise the different sounds in stories or sentences.

Building on Instructional Writing, this week we wrote instructions about how to make a Jam sandwich.

We are becoming more secure at using different openers for each sentence and making sure we number each new instruction.

Number bonds, addition and subtraction! At the tuff spot, we were using playing cards to match, sort, add and subtract!

It is important when we gather information, we know how to analyse it and present it! This week, we asked our friends what their favourite snack is and recorded the information using tally marks.

Yay! We can recognise, read and write the time for o’clock! We continue to work on recognising half past.

As it is Ramadan, we have been learning the importance of Ramadan and what it entails.

Boys and Girls, noticed Miss Amin no longer eating or drinking and were fascinated to learn about Ramadan.

We made Ramadan Lanterns.

Ramadan Lanterns are a symbolism of hope.

In the woodland area, we noticed there were only a few animals holes. What did we do?

WE DUG MORE!

Next week is a short week, but an exciting one where we will be starting our new topic… SPACE! How exciting!

Have a fabulous weekend superstars!

We are Responsible Citizens!

Welcome back to our blog! We are so happy and excited to be reunited with our friends.  We have had a super busy week of learning too!

In Literacy, we continue to explore phonemes! We are learning to recognise, say and create words using phonemes.

Using our knowledge of phonemes, this is enabling us to increase our fluency of reading. It also helps us read challenging words!

We have been exploring non-fiction texts!

We used the contents page to locate information to help complete a Fact File about our chosen book.

In Writing, we have been learning about Instructional Writing. We are learning the functionalities of writing and how to correctly form instructions.

We have to do the following:

  • Use a new opener for each sentence
  • Number each new instruction
  • Create detailed instructions which make sense
  • Remember to use punctuation

This week, we wrote instructions on how to wash your hands! We wrote the equipment required and the entire method.

Using our reading books, we have been learning about questioning. We created questions for our peers to answer!

Summer is approaching! We have revisited Time, months of the year and days of the week.

We have been learning to identify o’clock, half past and quarter past!

Number bonds are continuous! We continue to practise our mental maths skills and explore different strategies to help us solve calculations.

Doubles and Halves! We are excellent at recalling doubles up to 10. However, we are now learning about halves of doubles. We used a mirror to help us too!

For example, the mirror showed that the half of 12 is 6!

We are super at skip counting in 2’s. Therefore, we are learning how to skip count in 5’s!

Our Woodland area required a big tidy-up after the Easter Holidays. P1B showed they are responsible citizens as they worked hard to reinstate the Woodland area to its former glory. We decided to rebuild all the areas, including the tyre trail and the picnic area.

What a week it has been! I wonder what we will learn next week… I cannot wait!

Have a wonderful weekend superstars!

An eventful week Baking Rocky Road, Completing an Easter Egg Hunt, Sketching and capturing our Creativity!

We have made it to the end of Term! We have had a fun filled week completing lots of Easter activities.

Today we went on an Easter Egg hunt which was indoors and outdoors!

We were delighted when we found all of the eggs!

We also baked Rocky Road using 4 ingredients:

  • Chocolate
  • Digestive Biscuits
  • Cherries
  • Vegetarian Marshmallows

We wrote instructions on the method of baking Rocky Road too! After the holidays, we will be focusing on the key aspects of Instructional Writing.

We were learning tips and tricks on how to make Rocky Road!

Using our knowledge of halves and quarters, we cut Raspberries safely using a knife.

We discussed how the temperature has an affect on the baking process. The chocolate turns from a liquid into a solid to allow the mixture to set.

We have been creating Spring Paintings using the method of Printing with cardboard tubes.

Not only that, using collage we created Easter Egg Wreaths!

We made Easter Bunny drawings and using the skill of sketching, we created a background.

To end our fun filled week, we watched a Musical show called Big Splash!

What a term it has been! I hope you all have a well earned rest and enjoy the sunshine! You have worked so hard and I am so proud of you!

I can’t wait to see you already! Have a wonderful Holiday!

Lots of love,

Miss Amin xxx

It’s beginning to look a lot like… EASTER!

Easter is approaching and you may be able to tell in our classroom!

We have created our Home Corner into an Easter Home! We have made signs, posters and Easter Masks! We are also learning about the importance of Easter too.

We have been learning about warm and cool colours! Using this knowledge, we discussed Spring colours and plants too! We drew a rabbit in detail discussing shapes and painted flowers.

Our love for Painting has grown so much that we have developed a designated painting area against the window!

In Literacy, we continue to explore sounds and practise our blending skills to read tricky words.

We have been learning about Speech Bubbles and their purpose!

We are becoming super confident at recognising phonemes and using our knowledge of these sounds to create words.

In the library, we enjoy reading non-fiction books with our friends!

We have been practising our reading skills! We use our book to help us answer questions.

In Writing, we have been exploring how to use openers whilst remembering to use punctuation!

We are securing our knowledge of number bonds up to 10. We have been using Numicon to add and subtract amounts, to practise our subitising skills or to make number bonds.

We are learning how to solve the missing number in a calculation!

Although we are super confident at using a number line to solve calculations, we are practising to use our mental maths skills!

WOODLAND!

We love exploring the woodland area!

We have noticed changes in the Woodland area since Winter!

We notice plants beginning to grow, the leaves are appearing too!

We were reinforcing our learning for Forces – push and pull!

We were using our imagination to create stories and we made apple cake!

Parent’s Evening was incredibly positive! I hope you are all proud of your superstars for working so hard in Primary One. I know they will continue to make you proud just as much as they make me proud!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!xxx

Geometric Painting, Outdoor Painting, Money and Materials!

Welcome back to our blog!

We are having so much exploring Art through Painting. This week we created a Geometric Painting using tape. We created different shapes and then painted within the lines.

Scroll below to see our amazing and artistic paintings once we removed the tape!

We also discussed warm colours and cool colours!

During Outdoor learning, we made potions to enable us to paint!

We were painting a number line!

In Maths we have been exploring Money. We have been learning to make amounts using coins and learning about change which links with subtraction!

Continuing on with Science week from last week, we were exploring Materials. We learnt about what different objects are made from and learnt how to identify different materials correctly such as Wood, Metal, Plastic and Glass!

We have been using our knowledge of sounds to read non-fiction books about Materials.

‘This is glass’.

‘This is metal and the leaf is man-made.’

‘The fence is made out of wood.’

‘We are playing on metal.’

‘The tyre is rubber.’

The sun is shining which means our Outdoor PE lessons are extremely popular outdoors!

Our PE days are Monday and Thursday as is our Outdoor Learning Days.

Another fun filled week of learning, I wonder what will happen next week!

Have a great weekend superstars!

Science Week, Writing Sequenced Stories and Pointillism!

Welcome back to our blog! You will see another blog filled with amazing learning experiences completed throughout the week.

To help extend our ideas and vocabulary, we have began writing sequenced stories. We have to include a beginning, middle and end.

We make sure we remember to have neat handwriting, finger spaces and to use full stops and capital letters correctly. We are beginning to use openers such as First, After, Next and Finally.

To help us write and read tricky words, we use our knowledge of sounds including phonemes such as sh, ch and th.

Last week we explored Pointillism as we painted a Spring Painting! This week we have continued this to make a cherry blossom tree!

In Maths, we have continued to learn about number bonds. We have focused on adding three numbers too!

In the tuff spot, we were making Symmetrical Pictures and using mirrors to help us!

We are practising to add numbers together using our fingers, number lines and concrete materials. We are recognising to start with the bigger number.

To help us recognise 3D shapes, we tried creating our own using cocktail sticks and chickpeas!

Science week has been so much fun! We have been exploring lots of experiments!

To encourage our creativity, problem-solving skills and engineering skills we were creating models! The trickiest part was ensuring our structure was stable!

We also completed the Coca-Cola and Mentos experiment! We made predictions and hypothesis before we completed the experiment! We were real Scientists. We learnt about gas (Carbon Dioxide) and observed that the bubbles of gas had gotten larger. We realised as they are lighter than the cola liquid, they quickly shot to the top of the bottle!

This week could not have been busier! What a great week it has been!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! 🙂
