1C are Amazing Astronauts!

We are so excited to be exploring our new topic Space! Through different learning experiences we have been learning about the positioning of the sun, moon and stars. We have been exploring all the different planets and the purpose of them.

After learning different facts and information about Astronauts, we used this learning to create a Writing piece about what it would be like to be an Astronaut. We learnt that the word Astronaut is Greek for ‘Star Sailor’. We were shocked to find out that even animals have even travelled to space such as a dogs, monkeys, fish and mice!

Firstly, we began to create our own Astronaut and decorated our own unique Space suit!

Then using all of our knowledge about Astronauts and the information we found out through reading books  and watching informative videos, we created a spectacular Writing piece. It starts by saying, ‘If I were an Astronaut…’. Everyone wrote tricky words using their phonemes to help blend/sound out words, everyone used super punctuation and neat handwriting!

For our wall display, we wanted to create our large ‘Class’ Astronaut – we named him Astra!

In our different learning areas, we have been exploring Space through many ways.

Luke and Evie engaging in role  play as they are working hard in their space station!

Murdo, Gabby, Amy and Sophia reading challenging books to find information out about Space!

Lily-Anne is reading interesting facts about the Solar System.

Kerr and Ace exploring 2D and 3D shapes to create Space designs. Here they have designed a rocket!

At the Writing table, Eva is recording all the planets she can see!

Kate and Lily-Anne enjoying creating stories.

Lastly, in the Construction area, everyone has been creating their own Space Travelling Machine!

Arran’s last day

Today we said goodybe to our friend Arran. He is moving on to another school where he will make lots of new friends and learn lots of new things. We are going to miss Arran very much and wish him lots of luck in his new school. We had a little leaving party to celebrate his day and presented him with a collage of our best memories together.

Our new friends

We have been busy looking after two new visitors to the classroom. Last weekend, Eilidh caught some tadpoles and since then we have been carefully feeding them and observng them as they move about. We have discovered that they move super fast and are growing a little bigger as the days go by. We also secretly think they have been learning lots of new information as they listen to us from the water.

We have decided to name them Rosie and Rockstar. They are now living in our P1 outdoor area where we can carefully keen an eye on them and check that they are okay.

P1b learning

On Friday, we had our class assembly and what a performance it was! The boys and girls worked so hard to put together their learning journey, linking our current topic ‘living things’ with Jack and the Beanstalk.

We had so much fun reading the story and sharing our own ideas of what might be at the top of the beanstalk. It was a great stimulus for our writing and we have written some super stories, instructions for planting and speech bubbles for the main characters.

The story enabled us to imagine what it would be like to be a giant for the day. We created our own castle designs on paper and using 2D and 3D shapes.

We have been learning lots about plants and are confident to name the different parts of a plant and can explain what the parts do. Our garden role play has provided an excellent opportunity for our inner gardeners to be unmasked and has been a great investigation area.

We have been doing lots of planting in Primary 1 and are keeping an eye on any changes we notice.

Our sunflower seeds are still going strong and are standing nice and tall in our P1 outdoor area. We know the needs of a plant now so are able to give them the best care.

We were able to spot lots of different plants all around the school and record what they were and where we found them on our investigation clipboards.

A huge well done to all of the boys and girls for their fantastic effort in their learning and for being so confident delivering their lines and performing to the school and parents!

Learning About Living Things

We have been learning all about living things and looking at what they need to grow. We have used non-fiction texts, videos, songs and activities to research and develop our knowledge. We can identify and name parts of plants and have enjoyed planting bulbs and seeds. We have set up a controlled experiment to look at how different conditions affect growth.

Exploring Symmetry

We have recently been investigating symmetry. We painted symmetrical pictures, used mirrors to help us draw the other half of a picture and created symmetrical patterns.

We looked for symmetrical objects around the classroom and took photographs of them.  Here are some of the items we found…….

Exploring Living Things (1c)

As we are increasing our knowledge about Living Things, one of our main focus has been on Plants. We were learning to use Non-Fiction books to learn as much information as we can about a variety of Plants. We know we can use the Contents page to help locate information too.

We also had the opportunity to plant in new plants to help develop our outdoor learning area. For some children this was their first experience planting a plant or seeds! We learnt the delicate process of how to replant a plant into new soil – it was fun especially since we had nice sunny weather.

They were dedicated to making sure the roots were separated carefully before replanting these beautiful flowers within a hole they created using their fingers!

Whilst planting, we were working as team to ensure our tasks were completed properly!

Of course, we needed to water the plants too!

We also enjoyed planting Sunflower Seeds! We will be watching it closely to see when it grows. We know that plants need water, sun, time and space to grow within pots!

Since our topic is Living Things, we have been exploring Non-Fiction texts to read that have many challenging and tricky words! We have been learning the purpose of sub-headings, describing words and how to recognise when a piece of writing is a poem.

Within Art, we have been exploring how texture, tone and shade can make a difference to our paintings. Here are some wonderful paintings of Plants that emphasize these key properties.

We have also been showcasing our fantastic painting skills within our Outdoor Learning area too!

Finally, congratulations to Alexander Martin for an amazing performance in the Finals for Crookfur’s Got Talent! What a fantastic voice he had whilst singing ‘I’m still standing’ by Elton John! Well done Alexander!

P1c Learning Adventures

Primary 1c have came back in to school this week well rested and ready to work extremely hard for the last term! Here are some updates on the action that has been happening in 1c recently!

We hosted our own P1 Talent show which involved many children showcasing their amazing skills. There were a huge range of acts from dancing, singing and even some magic tricks were shown!

We then experienced our school’s International Day! We were shown different cultures from around the world including Pakistan, Thailand and Scotland. Also, we tasted a variety of foods from countries including samosas and Thai sticky rice and got to dance to music we have never listened to before. We loved trying on clothes from different cultures too.

All of us dancing along to Scottish Music!

We were trying on clothes from Thailand and eating yummy sticky rice!

Thanks to Hishaam’s Mum and Myra’s Mum, we got to taste food and learn lots of factual information about Pakistan!

At the end of our International day, we enjoyed dancing to music from all around the world!

Just before our Easter holidays began, we found out that an evil Bunny came to 1c and stole all of our handmade Easter Eggs! This only meant one thing… We had to go on an Easter Egg Hunt!

What an adventure that was, we had to look high and low to retrieve our eggs!

This week we have started our new Science topic which is based on Living Things. We have started this topic by learning the difference between living and non living things.

Today, we went on another adventure to try and seek living and non living things outdoors!

Sophia recorded that the bench and shed were not living things!

Everyone found interesting information outdoors! Ethan spotted that grass and flowers were in fact living things. Christopher and James noticed there was an ant on their clipboard! Perfect timing from this ant as they established this was also a living thing. Well done boys!

P.1a having fun learning!

Teddy Bears Picnic

We brought our favourite special teddies to school! We talked about our teddies and why they are so special. We all wrote instructions how to look after our special teddy!

We also made fruit salad to have at our teddy bears picnic in the afternoon. We talked about healthy foods. We read the fruit salad recipe together to help us make it. We noticed the recipe used ‘bossy words’ like cut, chop, slice and words like ‘first’, ‘then’ ‘next’ to help order the instructions

At the picnic we enjoyed eating the fruit salad! It was delicious! We sang songs about teddies, listened to a teddy story and read stories to our teddies.

We then had a go at writing our own fruit salad recipes using ‘bossy words’ and sequencing words like ‘next’. We were very good at remembering to number the instructions and that instructions are not set out like a story.

International day

On 27 March we celebrated International Day with lots of fun activities and were very lucky to have lots of visitors.

Christopher’s mum taught us all some Scottish dancing!

Some children chose to wear National dress.

We learned about the culture, dress and food of many countries from our parent visitors! A huge thank you to the mummies who visited from all the boys and girls for making International Day such fun. We learned a lot by listening, taking part in activities and asking questions.

Ben, the French assistant from Eastwood High School,  also visited us and we asked him lots of questions about living in France.  He was very impressed with our knowledge of French words and phrases and he read us part of a simple French storybook.  We enjoyed hearing his beautiful French accent as he read and we listened out for words we know.

Outdoor Play

We have a fantastic outdoor play area!

We are improving our skills and knowledge in many areas while having fun outdoors in the fresh air!

Well done Primary 1a!

Masterchef(s) in 1c!

Primary 1c have been learning about instructional writing! We know to use numbers when we create a new step and to use openers. We have created instructions for making a jam sandwich and for making cookies. To help aid our writing, we learnt the importance for note taking. As we watched a tutorial on how to make a jam sandwich and cookies, we were taking notes to help us remember what ingredients and equipment were used.

After we created our note taking and recipes for making cookies, we had the amazing opportunity to make some! We used all of our measuring skills that we have been learning in maths to measure different ingredients. Also, we were weighing, mixing, spreading and kneading whilst making cookies. 1C are the next upcoming bakers for sure (Well done!).

We were slicing butter that was left in room temperature so it was easy for us to slice.

We then measured flour that needed to be folded in within the creamy butter.

After the flour was folded within the butter, we then sieved in icing and mixed it in too.

After everything came together, we added our final ingredients and then put our mix in to the fridge to set. After it was in the fridge for 15 minutes, we  made icing and kneaded the cookie dough to cut out our shapes.

After all our hard work, we patiently waited until our cookies were cooked until they were golden brown. Finally, we enjoyed eating them. Yum!

That is not all because today 1c had the opportunity to make a fruit salad! We explored how to cut a variety of fruits carefully whilst following a recipe for our fruit salad! Tomorrow we will be using this learning experience to inform our writing.

We were able to show our amazing cutting skills! Look at what we created… it looks so tasty and tasted even better!

After lunchtime, we got to share stories about our favourite teddy, sang songs and had the opportunity to play with all the teddies everyone brought in! And of course, eat our delicious snacks created by ourselves!

We will continue to have learning experiences related to cooking and baking. Well done 1C for all your hard work. You are definitely Masterchefs!
