Dictionary Scavenger Hunt P3A

We have been developing our dictionary skills in Primary 3A. We have been using our knowledge of the alphabet to help us find words in the dictionary. Being able to use a dictionary helps us to become more independent when spelling words and also find out the meaning of words.

Depending on the letter the word starts with we now know to go to the beginning, middle or end of the dictionary to start our search.

We will be progressing onto searching for words starting with the same letter where we need to use the second letter to help us find the word.

Here are some pictures of our Dictionary scavenger hunt, we had a lot of fun searching for the questions in the classroom!

Active Spelling P3A

In Primary 3A we use lots of different active spelling activities to help us remember our spelling words. Here are just some of the activities we do!

We like to change these each week and have started enjoying spelling games such as hangman and spelling boom!

Measuring the Intestines P3A

Primary 3A have been learning about the human body. We loved learning about the digestive system and how food travels through our body.

We used metre sticks and string and worked in teams to measure the full 7 metres!

We measured the length of the large and small intestines so we could see how long they both are. We then tried fit them into our own bodies which gave us all a bit of a giggle!

Roman Numerals P3A

We absolutely loved the challenge of working out different Roman numerals. It fascinated us that the Romans didn’t write numbers in the same way we do today.

Once we got the hang of writing the numbers, we completed some of our own calculations in Roman numerals.

Tennis

We have been developing our tennis skills in our PE lessons.  We began with how to hold the racket and the different types of swings; forehand, backhand, over arm etc.

We came up with different ways of practising our control of the ball; balancing it on the racket, bouncing it off the racket (forehand and backhand) bounding it off the ground, off the wall etc.  We moved around the hall developing our control.

We then played different games in order to develop our control of playing the ball (or sometimes bean bag) towards a target.

Once we had developed our control we then worked with a partner or in groups of four to rally the ball back and forth with each other.

Maths Week Scotland P3A

Primary 3a were very excited to receive their maths trolley full of fantastic resources which they can use in class to support their learning.

We used Numicon to help us with dividing by two. We enjoyed creating lots of tricky calculations.

We are learning to add two-digit numbers and used our new tens and units to help us understand carrying.

We looked at tessellation, symmetry and pictures made from lots of different shapes. Here are some examples of our very creative work.

During Maths Week Scotland, we also discussed the importance of having a growth mindset. Primary 3a understand it is ok to make mistakes and that mistakes help us to learn. If we can’t do something, we tell ourselves, ‘We can’t to it…yet!’

Roman Onagers

Yesterday we had a STEM challenge – to create a Roman onager (catapult) using just some elastic bands, lollipop sticks and a spoon. We had 15 minutes to try to work it out in groups.

We learned that catapults work using potential and kinetic energy.

This group are starting to try and put a catapult together.

Harry knows that the energy is stored in the elastic bands – can you tell he is thinking? Myra is trying to build a base for the catapult.

Murdo and Lucas having a go.

Jamie, Olivia and Mehr are trying hard too.

After a while of trying ourselves – and getting pretty close – Mrs Grieve showed us how to make her version. We discussed that we really needed a growth mindset for this challenge. It was really tricky, but we had to keep trying and learn from our mistakes.

Next we had a competition to see which group could fire the ball the furthest.

Handwriting

We have been doing lots of activities to help with our handwriting!

We used chalk pens in our tuff tray.

Evie, Sophia, Harry and Callum are finger painting.

The Sophies using chalk! Can you see what letters we were learning to write?

Lewis and Harley using pens on the tables – don’t worry – we clean it all off afterwards!

Using playdoh.

Making the letters with cubes.
