Learning about numbers

Primary 1b have been working hard in maths investigating two numbers that add together to make 10. We have been exploring using a variety of materials to help us and have managed to find lots of different ways to make 10.

Number bonds to 10

We had to work together as a team to find the solutions and record our answers on the whiteboards. It was a little tricky but we were reminded to always check our answers by using our fingers.

Sara and Taylor hard at work

Here Sara and Taylor were given ten cubes and were asked to work out which calculations added together to make ten. They were very successful and soon began to remember certain number facts to make ten.

Teamwork

Cormac and Heena were working very well with each other and recorded several ways to make ten!

Bookbug Week in 1C

Last week, we were fully immersed in Bookbug Week as we read different books, listened to interesting stories through the tannoy, visited the local library and most importantly received our very own BookBug bags. We were also very fortunate to be visited by our Primary 6 friends who read us our own favourite story (twice!).

We were so excited to visit our local library! For some of us, it was our first time travelling by bus which we enjoyed.

As a class, we voted that Gorilla Loves Vanilla was our favourite book! We will completing a variety of Literacy activities based on the amazing story since it captured our interest.

Since it was the 1st of December on Friday, as a class we thought it would be nice to decorate the class together.

We were introduced to Jingles the Elf! Jingles the elf has placed a Santa Cam in the middle of our classroom to make sure we are always being kind and ensuring we are always working as hard as we possibly can! Every night, he writes us a message to surprise us with in the morning. He also wants us to complete a Random Act of Kindness everyday!

Santa too leaves us a message! As you can see, his legs are stuck in the ‘chimney’ so everyday he asks us a different question. It is our job to write back to him with a response to his question. We are always excited to see what messages are left by both Jingles and Santa.

Lastly, our new Star of the Day Christmas themed bag has started! Well done to Alexander who received it on Friday. We will all be working very hard to try and receive it.

P1a are enjoying reading!

We are all enjoying reading in Primary 1a!

We read a story together on the Interactive Whiteboard by sounding out the letters to make the words. We liked the characters and thought it was a funny story.

Then we did some activities using words from the story. We could pick words and could make different sentences. We wrote our own sentences about the story too.

Some of us put jumbled words from the story in the correct order to make sense and were able to draw a matching picture. Good reading!

We have also been playing reading games together!

Primary 6 visited us to share stories with us.  Thank you Primary 6!

Christmas Craft Fun!

We have also been making some Christmas bird seed feeders to help look after our feathered friends over the Winter. These will be on sale at the Christmas Fair on Friday. We hope to see you then!

Road Safety Week in 1C

This week we focused on how to be safe on the roads, analysed safe and unsafe situations where we had to spot the dangers. However, our job was also to rectify these dangers and discuss how we could make it safe. Also, we learnt about the active ways we can travel to school and many other places. Here are some pictures of 1c in action…

Then, we looked at different pictures within different environments and analysed whether or not it was safe and unsafe within our pairs.

(Our schools Junior Road Safety Officers offering us support and interesting discussion about the scenarios)

Everyday this week we recorded on our table whether we actively travelled to school using footprint stickers!

We were greeted by a special visitor this week too! Lollipop Lady Cathy shared amazing stories and information about her job!

Thank you so much to those who completed the Walking Bus! We had so much fun and loads of fresh air as we walked to school this week altogether :)!

Last but not least, some photos as we enjoyed some fun dancing this afternoon!

P1C in action on Anti-Bullying Week

During Anti-Bullying week, we were thinking about mindfulness. We shared class ideas together of how we want to be treated and how we should treat others. As a class, we discussed the importance of always being nice with our words and actions.

Some of the activities included ‘The Bruised Apple’ and a Sorting Activity of what makes a good friend.

We began with two clean and crisp apples and we compared their similarities and differences. However, we gently tapped and threw one apple on the floor and said some unkind things. Instantly, we realised one began to look different. Once we cut it open, we noticed that the apple was bruised, hurt, sad and lonely. We knew the inside of the apple felt horrible.

We knew that we never want to treat anybody like this and as a class agreed we should always make each other feel happy by being friendly and kind.

At the end of this busy week, we ended it with relaxing yoga!

Finally, here are some pictures of us actively making words with our new sounds, finding new words by playing Pass the Parcel   and building amazing creations using Maths!

Primary 1b hard at work

This week Primary 1b have been working hard to sound out words and write them down in a variety of ways. The boys and girls have started to use the camera to take photographs of the work they are proud of.

As part of our topic ‘people who help us’ we have been researching what ‘vets’ do in their everyday job. We are learning how to care for animals and had some animals to look after in our classroom.

P1a are working hard!

We have been working hard in Maths. We decided who would be the bingo caller and practised reading numbers to 20. We worked well together to play the game.

We have also been learning about coins and their value. We can identify 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p coins and can use our money purses to count out the correct numbers of pennies to go into the piggy banks.  We worked in pairs to sort and identify the coins. We also played money matching and sorting games on the Interactive Whiteboard.

Outside we have continued to enjoy playing the maths games different children suggested as part of our homework a few weeks ago.

Spooky Fun!

For some Hallowe’en fun we read some funny witch stories. Winnie and Wilbur, the cat, are always having trouble and getting in a muddle!

In class we had the opportunity to make hanging bats, draw spiders webs, paint pumpkins, cut and stick witches faces and colour by shape some Hallowe’en pictures.  The children enjoyed choosing different activities.

Today Primary 1b were learning about repeating patterns. We learned how to copy repeated patterns and created some of our own with a partner.

Mrs Denholm was very impressed with how hard we all worked and her socks were nearly blown off with how creative we all were. Here are some photographs of our work.

A Busy Week for Primary 1C!

This week, we have been exploring our numbers in many different ways. We have been active learners by singing whilst counting and estimating how many times we bounce a ball, using races to learn about ordinal numbers, using outdoor learning to help with our counting and using fun materials such as chalk to write numbers!

For our Listening and Talking within Literacy, we have began News Time every Friday afternoon where P1c hosts their own show telling us their interesting stories or news! (It is very exciting!)

Lastly, it was our final week completing our Topic of Road Safety. We learned so much about being safe on the roads and learnt different techniques on how to be safe. We know to be listen for traffic, watch for different vehicles, stop before crossing to look and to hold an adults hand when crossing. In aid of this, we created ‘reflective’ badges for our bag as we know BRIGHT IS RIGHT!
