Whole School Articles

Last year we created a wall display within the assembly hall to raise awareness of the United Convention on the Rights of the Child.

We chose 4 articles which we wanted everyone to know a little more about. This year we have to decided to choose 4 other articles to continue our learning about children’s rights and reinforce how we enjoy our rights and that this is not always possible for other children around the world.

Article 7- You have the right to a name and nationality.

Article 17- You have the right to get information that is important to your wellbeing. Adults should make sure the information you get is not harmful.

Article 14- You have the right to choose your own religion and beliefs.

Article 30- You have the right to practice your own culture, language and religion.

Playground Charter

We launched our playground charter last term and look forward to embedding it within our whole school ethos.

Our Equality Committee voted and decided on the following articles from the UNCRC:

Article 39- We have the right to help when we are hurt.

Article 15-We have the right to have friends.

Article 3- We have the right for adults to do what’s best for us.

Article 31- We have the right to play and rest.

RRSA whole school survey

We shared our rights respecting survey with all pupils, teachers and support staff to monitor our progress towards our Silver Award and becoming a ‘Rights Aware’ school.

Our Equality reps recorded the results and we discussed them as a group.

Beat the Street Initiative – The Right to a clean environment

The Our P6 & P7 Equality reps have been working with the Sports Committee and JRSOs to launch the Beat the Street Initiative within Cross Arthurlie. Pupils, teachers and parents are being encouraged to walk, run or cycle and collect points for our school by scanning their fob or card against the beat boxes across Barrhead and Newton Mearns.

We helped install the air monitor to see if the air quality improves and will look at the readings as the weeks progress. We want to help raise awareness in our local community about article 24: the right to a clean and safe environment.

P3 Plastic Pollution

P3 have been learning how plastic pollution is having an impact on our local environment, especially animals living in the sea such as turtles. They have been leading recycling of plastic within the school through separate plastic bins.

Article 24

You have the right to the best health care possible, safe water to drink, nutritious food,  a clean and safe environment, and information to help you stay well.

P7 World War Two

In Social Studies P7 have been learning about World War Two and the Holocaust. They discussed how Jewish children like Anne Frank were persecuted for their religious beliefs and many were tortured and killed.

Article 14

You have the right to choose your own religion and beliefs. Your parents should help you decide what is right and wrong, and what is best for you.

Article 38

You have the right to protection and freedom from war. Children under 15 cannot be forced to go into the army or take part in war.

Article 37

No one is allowed to punish you in a cruel or harmful way.

World Children’s Day – 20th November 2018

World Children’s day is on Tuesday 20th November. This day recognises when the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child was signed and agreed in 1959. This day is to promote children’s rights around the world.

Pupils can wear something blue to show their support for Children’s Rights.

We will be learning about how every child is born with these rights and they should not be taken away. Unfortunately there are still children living in countries where their rights are not met. We will be learning about inspiring children who have fought for children’s rights.

Barrhead High School sharing their learning on Children’s Rights

Pupils from S2 and S3 in Barrhead High came to deliver a lesson on ‘The right to an education’ to our Primary 7s. We learned about the ‘Send my Friend to School’ campaign and how children around the world have the right to an education but this is sometimes affected by conflict, natural disasters and gender inequalities in specific countries.

We also learned how some issues in the UK such as bullying might have an impact on our right to an education. We created an issues tree to highlight the effects and solutions to ensure our rights are met fully.

Working towards SILVER

Miss Reid had a productive day on the Silver Award training course.

She shared our school’s Action Plan and explored the three strands for learning about rights.

  1. Teaching and Learning ABOUT rights.  Children should know the every child is born with rights and these are universal and unconditional.
  2. Teaching and Learning THROUGH rights. Everyone within the school respects the rights of others and demonstrates this in their day to day actions/behaviour.
  3. Teaching and Learning FOR rights. Children can express their opinions and are involved in decisions within the school. Pupils take action to help promote rights, locally and nationally.
