Moon Sand, Loose Parts and Large Scale Art!

The children have been exploring measurement this week using moon sand, cups, spoons and beakers. We enjoyed exploring the different textures and how the sand could change from soft and crumbly to hard. They experimented and used their imaginations making cakes, sand castles and volcanos. We added loose parts to further encourage counting and build fine motor skills.

DM “It’s a bath for my baby I’m sprinkling the water on”

NF “I’m counting how many spoons to fill it up”

NP “It feels so soft “ there are so many Pom poms I count 7”

PW “I’m making a cake with sprinkles”

SG “There’s 300 grams of moon dust”

EW “It’s full up”

This week outdoors we have been looking at numeracy concepts in different ways. We have been able to create the numerical value out of loose parts and discussed concepts of before and after.

We have also been looking at large scale art pieces outside, we have been letting our creativity take over the stage area to make it colourful. We have developed our listening skills, turn taking and communication skills with others!

This week we have continued our theme with animals, only this time we have researched where in the world they live. We introduced a world map to support this learning, and used it to pinpoint the location of them. There was lots of mark making from the children drawing their favourite animals and then placing them on the map. Did they live on land or water? There were lots of questions, discussions and curiosity throughout the week.

For  National Bookbug week the children were participating with story and rhymes all about animals.   The book was a non fiction book about wildlife.   They have been learning about encyclopaedias, gestures and noises that animals make. This was also represented during our elephant game with Bookbug.
