Farm Themes, Technology and Our New Rolling Lunches!

In our malleable area our farm-themed tuff tray sparked wonderful exploration as the children got stuck into a sensory harvest of potatoes, broccoli, carrots, and mushrooms. We began by digging into the big question of where our food begins, shifting our focus from the supermarket shelves back to the soil to discuss how farmers grow crops and transport them to our local shops. The children were fascinated to learn about the “secret ingredients” plants need to thrive—soil, water, and sunlight—while marvelling at how a tiny seed transforms into a crunchy carrot or a “mini tree” of broccoli. This exploration naturally flowed into our numeracy work as we used the vegetables to master the language of size, identifying which items were big, which were bigger, and which was the biggest of the bunch. We even took a moment to share our favourite vegetables, celebrating healthy eating and the journey from farm to fork.

This week our learners have been exploring a range of exciting technologies as part of Science Week Scotland, developing early STEM skills through play and discovery. Using tools like Intellino trains and Sphero cars, children experimented with movement, direction and problem-solving while building confidence with positional and directional language such as forward, backward, left, right and around. Exploring technology in the early years helps nurture curiosity, creativity and critical thinking, giving children valuable opportunities to investigate how things work and to become confident, capable learners in a digital world.

We’re excited to share a positive change to our lunchtime routine. We have recently moved from fixed lunch sittings to a rolling lunch system, allowing children to enjoy their meals in a more relaxed and flexible way. This approach helps reduce queues and waiting times, giving the children more opportunity to eat at a comfortable pace and spend quality time with friends.

Another lovely change is our new circular table seating. Children now sit together around round tables with a member of staff at each one. This creates a calm, family-style environment where staff can support conversations, encourage good table manners, and ensure everyone feels included.

The atmosphere in the dining hall has become much more social and relaxed, and it has been wonderful to see everyone enjoying their lunches together in this welcoming space.
