January 2026

To celebrate Burns Day we explored The Gruffalo in Scots. We translated the Scot’s words using the original version of the gruffalo to help us. After, we learned how to draw the Gruffalo! 🌲 🐭 🐍

We have been enjoying learning how to speak Mandarin in the Mandarin Classroom with our mandarin teacher from China 🇨🇳  We are learning how to explore a culture which is different to our own.  We have been celebrating the year of the house for Chinese New Year. 🐴  🐉 🇨🇳  ✨

In Science we are learning how to investigate sound. So far, we have researched the human ear and can name the main parts of the ear. We also experimented sound vibrations using rice and instruments. When we made the loud noises we could see the rice jumping up with the vibrations.  It was fun making so much noise!! 🥁 🍚 🎶

December 2025🎄

Lots of fun has been had this month in Primary 2.
We worked really hard on our Nativity which turned out absolutely fantastic! You were all super stars 🌟 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Santa’s reindeer and a couple of friendly elves came to visit. 🦌🦌

We all had a great time at our party, especially when Santa came and told us we have been so good this year 🎅🎁

A huge thank you to Rory’s mum who sent in lovely Christmas ornaments for us to decorate 🎨

Finally, look at these amazing identical pictures the girls designed together 💖

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and will see you next year!

Children in Need 🐻 💛

We had so much fun celebrating and fundraising for Children in Need!

.

Art 🎨

In Art we have been learning how to apply colour and pattern. We have been working really hard in art to create work which explore specific artist elements. We enjoyed listening to the story ‘My Mum and Dad make me Laugh’ by Nick Sharratt to inspire us with how to use spots and stripes in our art work. We also enjoyed ‘Fish Patterns’ to help us learn about creating different types of patterns. We love using the watercolours to create beautiful art work.

Religious and Moral Education 💟

In RME we have been learning how to deepen our understanding of belief. We have also been learning how to explore religions around the world. We have been researching Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Sikhism, Judaism and Hinduism.  Some children were brilliant leaders of learning by sharing what they know about their own religions and what they do to practise their belief.

Happy 60th Birthday Cross Arthurlie 🎂

We had so much fun swinging back to the 60s to celebrate 60 years of Cross Arthurlie Primary School.
we enjoyed learning about life in the 60s and taking part in a House Quiz all about the 60s. We learned that:

  • Toys started being made of plastic in the 60s
  • The Beetles ruled the music world!
  • Fashion was a big deal and people started exploring fashion in new ways!
  • Lego and the original etch-e-sketch were the most popular Christmas toys in 1965.
  • The first colour tv was invented

October 2025

What a busy October we have had! 🍂
We went a walk to learn about houses and different buildings in our local area. We used a checklist and made notes to record what we saw.

Afterwards we all helped to construct a 3D cardboard construction of our walk.

We love playing with our 3D Barrhead map.

In Numeracy we have started learning about numbers up to 100 and we have been doing lots of measuring and creating patterns.

In Literacy we wrote magical Halloween spells 🪄🎃👻 Using bullet points to list the ingredients and bossy verbs in the instructions. We had some brave volunteers read their magic spells out to the class 👏🌟

Happy Halloween everyone, I hope you all have a great weekend 🎃👻

September 2025

Thank you to all our visitors who came to Open Afternoon. We loved showing off our great work and having you help us with some targets.

In Numeracy we have been learning to count in odd and even numbers, adding a single digit to 10 and lots more adding and subtracting. We particularly enjoyed playing a subtraction game with our friends.

In Literacy we are working on reading and spelling common and tricky words, the alphabet, reading aloud, sentence structure and correct letter formation with neat handwriting.

Our topic just now is Our Local Area. Everyone was keen to draw what they could see from our big playground and asked if we could go for a walk. So next Tuesday morning we’re off on a walk around the local area. We will be looking at different types of houses, shops and land use.

Finally we have been very busy celebrating Maths Week Scotland. We learned what infinity means ♾️ Then used the mascot Finn Finity and created our own shape character and number character to write a wild adventure story. Every story is AMAZING! Here is page 1 of a few of our stories:

Primary 2🌟🌟

What a great start we’ve all had in Primary 2 🌟🌟

In Literacy we’ve started learning about proper letter formation, the alphabet, spelling and sentence structure.

In Numeracy we have been working on addition and subtraction, numbers to 30, days of the week, months of the year and we’ve been learning to set calculations out in our jotters.

We have also had fun making birthday cards for our friends, writing a class promise to each other and creating fabulous art work!

Just a wee reminder that our PE day is Monday and our Outdoor Learning is on a Wednesday. Please provide children with a spare set of clothes, especially socks, on a Wednesday just in case we get wet and muddy.

Thank you,

Mrs Brown

Space Day!

On Friday, Primary 1.2 spent the day learning all about space.  We learned:

  • The names of the planets in our solar system
  • What gravity is
  • That the sun is a big star
  • How the earth turns and moves around the sun.

All our targets were space themed. We did some space data handling, designed a badge for a space mission and made our own rockets.

April

Just before we broke up for Easter, Primary 1 enjoyed an Easter egg hunt outside. It was lovely sunny weather.

In Maths we have started learning about data handling. The children have enjoyed learning how to record information and write tally marks.

The children enjoyed writing about their Easter holidays this week and did some lovely work.
