October in Primary 1

In Maths, we have been learning about shape and discovered that shapes are all around us including in our school grounds.
Daisy- the bin has a circle shape.

Harris M- the bricks have a rectangle face.

Lewis- look the tyres are circle on top.

Max- I am standing on a square.

Our final lesson about animal environments focused on animals in our school ground. We went on a mini beast hunt to see what lives in our school grounds. Some of the insects we found included, spiders, ants, worms, flies, caterpillars and slugs. Unfortunately we found lots of litter in the playground which makes  animals homes messy and also can be dangerous to them. We are making sure we always put our litter in the bin. (ARTICLE 24)

In Literacy, we continue to learn new sounds and tricky words. Some of our favourite activities this month have included, spin the wheel and write the tricky word on the pumpkin, write the words in the sand and make the tricky words with play doh and cutters.
Match the ghosts to the tricky word.

This month our buddies came to visit during digital literacy week. We worked together to make a jam board which showed what animals live in the ocean, jungle and arctic.

Maths week

This week is maths week and we have been discovering maths in the world around us. We learned about an artist name Kandinsky who uses shapes to create paintings and drawings. We created our own Kandinsky circles using oil pastels and then outside using chalk. Check out our fabulous art work below.

French

Primary 1 have been learning French greetings.

Bonjour – hello

Au revoir – goodbye

Je M’appelle – my name is

We had a special visit from Camembear who came all the way from France and loved listening to us speak in French. Here are some pictures of us giving him a cuddle.

August in Primary 1

We are settling well and our teacher is very proud of how quickly we have picked up classroom routines. We are responsible for managing our learning as we complete targets, explore the areas of the classroom and work with Mrs Burnett.

Literacy

Over the last few weeks we have been learning the sounds s, a, t, i, p and n. Here are some pictures of the different ways we have been developing our letter recognition and formation in class.

Fishing for sounds, splat the sound, sort the pictures by their sound, collage the n with newspaper, write n in the net, trace the letters, paint the p’s.

Maths

We have been learning to count amounts, recognise and write numbers.

Build a tower to match the number, join the correct amount of links to match the number on the playing card, make the number with play-doh, roll and write the number.

On our outdoor learning day, we explored number outdoors. We got into groups of different amounts, used the giant tens frame to show amounts and practised writing numbers using chalk.

Muddy Movers

We have been using the equipment to develop our balance skills. To hold our balance standing up tall and holding our arms out really help. We played balance statues on the crates then crossed a raised plank.

Useful information

Welcome to Primary 1/2!

Monday will be our P.E. day. Children can come to school wearing their kit of black leggings or shorts and white/blue polo shirt to save them having to change in school. Please note, jewellery must not be worn.

Wednesday is going to be our Learning Outdoors day, starting on Wednesday 24th August. We will be outside for most of the day. Children can come to school wearing comfortable trousers, such as leggings or jogging bottoms, with their school polo shirt and school jumper. We kindly ask that children also bring a spare change of clothes and socks in their school bag just in case we have a wet or muddy day. It is helpful to have these items clearly labelled with your child’s name. We would be grateful if you could provide welly boots for your child to keep in school. We have waterproofs that can be worn but if you have your own, you are welcome to send these in to be kept in school. As it is getting colder, please make sure your child has a suitable jacket with them which can be worn under the waterproofs if required.

On Fridays we will be learning tricky words. It is helpful for children to bring in a tub for these to be handed out to allow practise at home.

Thank you for your support. We are looking forward to a fantastic year in Primary 1!
