Teddy Bears Picnic

What a fantastic day we had at our teddy bears picnic 🐻🥪🍎

We all confidently made our own cheeses or jam sandwich 🥪  played lots of fun games and were very excited to see the queen 👑

We have all worked hard this year and it was nice to relax and have some fun time together.

Tiny Teachers

Well done Tiny Teachers! 🌟🌟🌟

You are all confident speakers, with clear voices and excellent body language.  You were able to share your knowledge and interests with your peers and answer any questions.  You were also an amazing audience, showing good listening skills and able to ask questions to gain more information.

I am so impressed with your organisation and confidence to stand up and speak to the whole class. I loved hearing and learning about space, deathly animals, octopuses,  Sonic, Mario, cheerleading, gymnastics, karate, football, family holidays, family members and pets and lots more detailed presentations.

Thank you and a HUGE well done!

I think you’re all amazing 🌟🌟🌟👏👏👏

Calderglen Park

We all had such a great day at Calderglen Park on Tuesday. We loved seeing the animals and playing in the park.  🐰🐹🐍🐢🐇🦜🐒😎
Today we wrote a diary entry about our trip. We had to include detail about the trip, a feeling, who we went with and sign it off from ourselves. Amazing independent writing Primary One! 👏🌟📝

May 2022

I can’t quite believe we’re already at the end of May and now heading into our last few weeks of Primary 1!

Throughout May we have been very busy in Numeracy learning about data handling, symmetry and telling the time.

We had lots of fun during Sports Day.

We have been learning about life in the past and especially enjoyed creating our own cave people inspired artwork.

After learning about the features of castles we used recyclable materials to build our own castles. Can you see our battlements, draw bridges, flags and arrow slit windows? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏰

We enjoyed our visit to the library, choosing our own book to read in school and we look forward to returning them next week.

Finally, we always enjoy taking our own pictures!

Open Afternoon

A huge thank you to all our adults who popped in today during Open Afternoon. We were all very excited to see you and work on our jubilee artwork with you. Have a wonderful weekend celebrating the queen’s platinum jubilee  🇬🇧 👑

Muddy Movers

This week at Muddy Movers the children really enjoyed experimenting with the hula hoop. Adam explored how the hoop could roll, Violet explored different ways she could make it spin and quite a few children enjoyed trying to hula hoop!

There was also obstacle course building and playing ‘The Ground is Lava’ which gave the children opportunities to develop their balance and take risks with their movements.

There was also lots of fun exploring and playing with friends.

Mini beast hunting and signs of spring 🐝🐞🕷🌱

Over the last few weeks we have been out looking for signs of spring and enjoying some mini beast hunting.

We found buds on trees, new leaves opening up and pine cones and flowers beginning to grow. Spring is definitely here 🌱☀️

On our first mini beast hunt we had a checklist to record what we found.

On our second mini beast hunt we really enjoyed using the new magnifying view finders to get a closer look at the bugs we found 🔎🐜🐝🐞🕷🦟🔍 We also learned that our new class mate, Myles, is an excellent bug hunter. He found lots of mini beasts and bravely scooped up a dead bee for us all to have a closer look at 🐝

This week we went out again, on the children’s request to bug hunt using the view finders, but this time we had to draw what we found.  Adam also found a giant number 10 outside! 👏👍

Living Things 🌱🌳🌷

We have been learning about living and non-living things.

We can identify living things:

Cara – spider

Orla – worm

Blair – tree

Eva – flower

We can identify non-living things:

Josh – aeroplane

Sean – chair

Lucas – door

Robyn – table

We learned the name for each part of the plant and what job they do to help the plant grow and live. We decided to grow broad beans so we could see the roots and shoot growing before we planted them in soil.

After two weeks we could see the roots and shoots starting to grow.

So then we took our beans outside to plant into soil.

I hope all your  broad beans are being well looked after and growing tall. 🌱🌞

⚖📏Measure📏⚖

Over the last few weeks we have been exploring the concept of measure.  We have experimented with everyday items as units of measure to investigate and compare sizes and amounts in the environment.  We then shared our findings with our friends.

We started with the skills of measuring length using our feet and our hands. It can be tricky using your feet to measure and not fall over.

We estimated how long an object was  and then measured it using cubes, straws and paperclips. Using a selection of loose parts we also created towers and arranged them from the shortest to the tallest.

We can now use language such as:

•  “long/longer” and “short/shorter”.

•  “tall/taller” and “small/ smaller”.

We investigated the concept of weight using non-standard units such as pegs, stones, clips and cubes.  We used  a simple 2-pan balance to weigh items and describe which classroom objects  are heavier, lighter or  about the same weight. We  can now place classroom objects in order according to their weight.

Finally we explored the concept of volume by  filling containers with liquids and solids such as water, cubes and sand. we can confidently describe capacity using the words  full, empty, nearly empty, nearly full and half full.
