Transition: 30/04

As I am sure you know High School will present you with even more opportunities to develop your skills and talents. Whether you want to improve your science skills to advance medicine or hone your trampoline skills to make it to the Olympics High School has more specialist teachers and equipment to help you realise your dreams.

Click on the link and read a range of success stories that began at High School.

Next follow the second website link and scroll down to watch the video ‘Hopes and Dreams’.

Once you have done this write 3 goals that you would like to achieve at High School: it could be in the first few months or by the end of S6. Then underneath your goals write some action points that will help you achieve them. I have attached an example to help. You might want to try discussing your goals with someone at home.

Maths: 30/04

Today I have set you a starter challenge to get your brain in gear. Afterwards you can choose to do either the Medium or Hot multiplication task.

Complete the mental calculations on the starter challenge as fast as you can. Time yourself using a stopwatch, phone or the second hand of a clock then write down the time it took you.

I have attached a video to help you with long multiplication that you will find in the HOT challenge. This can be quite tricky so give it your best shot. Remember, practise is the key to improving at calculations like these!

Transition 29/04

Today we are going to be thinking about your move to High School. Lots of you have had the chance to see the High School that you will be going to and all it has to offer. No matter what school you are going to this transition will give you lots of exciting experiences from new clubs, subjects, peers and much more!

Watch the video I have attached to find out about these pupils’ favourite things about High School.

Then come up with a list of things that you are looking forward to. You might want to have a look at the website of your new school to find out more about what they have to offer.

If someone at home is free interview them about what they enjoyed most at High School- they might even go to the same one!

Today we are going to be learning about synonyms!

Watch the video to find out more then complete the worksheet.

If you are finished and still have time, try playing the ‘Synonym Game’ with someone at home: 1 person says an adjective (describing word) and the other has to think of as many synonyms as they can!

OR

Play the online game that I have attached.

I have attached a link to the BBC Bitesize page about negative numbers that has a video you can watch and quiz you can complete too. Once you’ve had a look at this give the challenges a go. I’ve also attached a negative number mission you can complete online or an extension game you can play at home if you have time.

Science: 21/04

This term in science we are going to be learning about light.

Watch this video to find out about different types of shadows and how they are created. Look around your house and try to find objects that are transparent, translucent and opaque. Test this out by putting them under a light. Or you could even go outside and use the best light source of all, the sun!

Once you have finished this you could create shadow art as shown in the picture attached. Find something around your house that you think will create an interesting shadow. Place it in front of a light source with paper or a jotter behind and draw around the shadow! If you’re extra creative, you could even use your other hand to make the shadow.
