Maths Week Scotland ➕➖➗✖️💱🔸🔲🔻🕖🕟1️⃣9️⃣🔢📆🛒🌡💻

Last week was the inaugural event and we enjoyed taking part by discussing the importance of maths in everyday life.

We discussed the many ways adults in our school need to use maths to do their jobs well. We also considered maths and sport, art and cooking. Thank you to Karen who came from the kitchen to share her daily use of maths skills.

Thanks also to Miss Innes and P6B for leading a challenging mental maths treasure hunt. It was fun!

Sciences – Magnetism ⚙️⛓🔑🗝

Miss Paterson found out that we already had quite a lot of ideas about magnets and that we knew good sciencey words too. She set us a challenge to find out more about the properties of magnets so we investigated whether or not they were attracted to different objects around us. From what we found we decided that magnets are attracted to metal. We are going to explore this further next time.

Hubble bubble…

We used our reading skills to answer different questions about a text. We quickly spotted that it was a set of instructions – a recipe for a potion!

We then moved from reading to more talking and listening to make our own potions. Nafeesah and Isobel caught the action on camera…

Fun and Laughter

We have had an exciting week in Primary 1. On Tuesday, Arlo’s mummy came in to see us and she brought her violin. We learned about the different parts of a violin and she played some songs for us. We had our first assembly on Friday. We talked about our learning journey since august and performed a song at the end. We really hope everyone enjoyed it! After this we went on a walk as it is Walk to School Week. We all tried our best to walk to school this week and we got a magnet and lots of stickers.

We would like to say a big thank you to the mums and dads, and to all of the staff who helped us this week.

Our busy week!

Saint Patrick’s Day

Miss Pope went a bit crazy on St. Patrick’s Day and was dressed in green from head to toe. Our class fairy Nixie lost her friend Paddy the Leprechaun but he left her some clues to find him. We went on a treasure hunt and we found Paddy at the end of a rainbow with his pot of gold.

Smoothies

We made strawberry and banana smoothies on Wednesday. We learned how to cut strawberries using the bridge method and we learned how to cut bananas using the claw method. We really enjoyed making the smoothies and they tasted delicious. We were very lucky to have so many mums and dads helping, thank you so much for joining us.

P4A Stories

The P4A pupils wrote their own Easter stories. They came into our class and read them to us. They were really good and we enjoyed hearing them and seeing the wonderful pictures.

Sport Relief Challenge

We took part in our Sport Relief Challenge today. We took part in 6 stations. We were gymnasts, runners, golfers, basketball players, footballers and tennis players. We had a fun afternoon and we are so happy that we could raise money for charity. The school has raised over £1000 already for this great cause. Thank you for your sponsorship.

World Book Week

This week was World Book Week. There were lots of events running in the school all week. On Monday, we got to start the travelling book. We were given the opening to a story and we had to add two sentences before we sent it to Primary Two. It went to every class in the school and we had a finished story by the end of the week. On Thursday we wrote a story about our favourite book. We wrote about Star Wars, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Harry Potter, Frozen and many other books. On Friday we dressed up as a character from the book we wrote about and we got to read a page from our favourite book to the class.

Rouken Glen

On Wednesday we went to Rouken Glen Park. We were met by Katy who told us all about how animals survive in winter. She then showed us how to make bird feeders and once these were done, we hung them on the trees in the woods.

Then we got to feed the birds seeds (we learned that it is dangerous to give them bread) and see the waterfall which was very noisy.

At the end of our trip we got to play in the playground until it was time to go home. We had a great day. Thank you to the parents who came with us.

Becoming Responsible Citizens

We have been learning how to become responsible citizens in Primary One.

On Friday, we had a visit from ‘Bad Girl’ from Recycling Heroes. She taught us all how to be recycling heroes and by the end of the session we had taken down the menacing Rubbish Monsters. We had a lot of fun.

Today Andy from the SSPCA came to visit us and the Primary Twos. He told us all about the importance of caring for animals and what we should do if we see an animal that needs help. We all did really good listening and asked lots of questions at the end.
