The Rights Respecting School Award parliament group is supporting to Shoebox Appeal this year. The pupils have chosen this initiative in order to raise awareness of children around the work who are not as able to access their rights as we are. The boxes give a much needed festive gift to children in places such as Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia who are suffering from the effects of war or famine. We have had great success with this in the past and it’s a really inexpensive way to do something really worthwhile. Places such as B&M and Home Bargains provide really good options for items and the boxes that we have made so far cost less than £10!
You can help in a few simple steps:
- Get an empty shoebox and wrap the box and lid separately in colourful wrapping paper.
- Use a PostIt to indicate if you parcel is for a boy or girl and identify an age category 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14 (we will complete a label for you)
- Fill your shoebox with a selection of fun toys, hygiene items and school supplies.
- If possible, include one or two special items you know a child will love such as a doll, cuddly toy or deflated football with pump. You can also include a personal note and photo of yourself or your group.
- Drop into the Drama Studio as soon as you have your box filled and wrapped.
- DO NOT WRAP THE WHOLE BOX, YOU NEED TO LEAVE IT OPEN SO IT CAN BE CHECKED.
- Hand in to Miss Fenton by Thursday 14th November.
- Points awarded to House who brings in the most boxes!
Please DO NOT include the following: Used or damaged items; clothing other than as listed above; war related items such as toy guns, play soldiers or knives; chocolate, sweets or other food items; seeds; aerosols; toothpaste, lotions or liquids of any type including bubbles; medicines; hand-made or knitted stuffed toys; playing cards of the 4-suit variety; anything of a political, racial or religious nature; sharp objects; glass containers or fragile items; books with mainly words.
