Young Singer of the Year

On Wednesday 5th February the music department’s annual Young Singer of the Year event took place. A fantastic number of parents, friends, pupils and staff turned out to hear a wide variety of songs performed in order to impress our judges, Amy Papiransky and Kirsty Lamb. It was a fantastic evening of exceptionally high talent and entertainment. Many thanks to everybody who supported the event, the Malawi group for providing refreshments, and the junior choir for providing entertainment during the break. Congratulations to our champions: junior winner Holly Johnson (S3) & runner up, Darrach O’Dowd (S1). Congratulations also to the Rising Star: Lauren Selbie (S2).  Senior winner: Ellie (S5) and runner up, Nairne (S5)

Climate Champions

Good luck to our pupils who are extremely passionate about climate change and have entered a competition for The Hunter Foundation to find Scotland’s Climate Champions.  The brief for the competition was to summarise what our school would do if given the opportunity to address the global climate emergency.  The prize for the successful group would be to attend a dinner being hosted by Sir David Attenborough at the National Museum of Scotland on 18th February 2020.  The pupils have created a video which reflects their vision. Their entry can be viewed here.

Community Maths Project

This year, eight S6 pupils have been volunteering on an adult learning mathematics community project. Mrs McLaughlin initiated a partnership with East Renfrewshire’s adult learning services last year delivering numeracy lessons to adult learners in the community. During ‘Maths Week Scotland’ mathematics teachers Mrs McLaughlin and Mr McAllister, along with the eight S6 pupils, launched Williamwood’s community project at East Renfrewshire’s Adult Learning Festival.

The aim of the project was to deliver SQA recognised mathematics qualifications to the learners. The pupils have volunteered weekly on a Tuesday afternoon where they have developed strong working relationships with the adult learning community. The pupils have responsibility for researching, planning activities and assisting with the delivery of mathematical content. The success of the project has been clear to see with the learners commenting positively on the development of their confidence with numeracy and mathematics.

In recognition of their dedication, the S6 pupils have been nominated for a Scottish Education Award and were recently featured in the Daily Record. We are extremely proud of their efforts thus far and the impact that they are having on the learners.

Parental Involvement Act 2006

The Scottish Schools (Parental Involvement) Act 2006 sets out the role parents, schools and education authorities must play in ensuring all parents are fully involved and engaged in their children’s learning and in the life and work of our schools.

The Scottish Government made a commitment to update, strengthen and modernise the guidance as part of its joint Scottish Government / Convention of Scottish Local Authorities “Learning Together” Action Plan.

They are now seeking the views of a wider audience to refine the updated guidance.

They are running a full public consultation on the draft updated guidance, from Friday 24 January 2020 until Thursday 30 April 2020.

They would be grateful if you can complete the consultation questionnaire on the refreshed guidance which can be accessed here.

The Scottish Government is hoping to hear from anyone who has an interest in how parents can be fully involved and engaged in children’s learning.

For more information on the public consultation and how you can be involved in this please contact: parental.involvment@gov.scot
