Community Maths Project
This year, eight S6 pupils have been volunteering on an adult learning mathematics community project. Mrs McLaughlin initiated a partnership with East Renfrewshire’s adult learning services last year delivering numeracy lessons to adult learners in the community. During ‘Maths Week Scotland’ mathematics teachers Mrs McLaughlin and Mr McAllister, along with the eight S6 pupils, launched Williamwood’s community project at East Renfrewshire’s Adult Learning Festival.
The aim of the project was to deliver SQA recognised mathematics qualifications to the learners. The pupils have volunteered weekly on a Tuesday afternoon where they have developed strong working relationships with the adult learning community. The pupils have responsibility for researching, planning activities and assisting with the delivery of mathematical content. The success of the project has been clear to see with the learners commenting positively on the development of their confidence with numeracy and mathematics.
In recognition of their dedication, the S6 pupils have been nominated for a Scottish Education Award and were recently featured in the Daily Record. We are extremely proud of their efforts thus far and the impact that they are having on the learners.
