Madness in March

The class loved celebrating Science Week this month with 16 minutes of discussion every day to stretch our scientific enquiry skills. Travis particularly enjoyed Thunksday, where pupils had to decide which of two options they would rather, e.g. being able to breathe underwater or to fly!

Talking of Science, we planted our strawberry seeds in class – we are experimenting with them, watching what happens when they grow in different conditions, e.g. no water, or hot water, etc. Rory was really excited to report the surprising finding that the seed which is growing only in water is actually starting to sprout! We discussed that we do not think that it will grow properly because (as Cameron reminded us!) it will miss the nutrients from the soil, but we are eagerly waiting to see what will happen.

In addition to the way that strawberries grow from seeds, we have looked at the life cycles of lots of plants and animals. Katie loved exploring the lifecycle of a butterfly, Freya enjoyed seeing frogspawn evolving and Mia liked seeing an egg hatch and become a chicken!

This month we have been getting sticky making papier mache models for our Spring Service. Aribah and Calum, Ross and Cameron and Niamh and Nadar used measuring equipment to mix litres of water and flour to make the glue. Groups of four then made our amazing models. Come to the Spring Service at Church to see our:

Chick and egg, lamb, tadpole, strawberry plants and daffodils!

The whole school ran a mile in the playground for Sport Relief. We loved it – we found it easy, though, as we run a mile every Monday!

We have loved learning a new song in Music –Annabel and Ellis love clapping the new rhythms we have learnt in John Kanaka.

At the moment we are in the middle of a great project for Financial Education – Buy a Bike! We are learning that we may need to save if there isn’t enough money for everything we want, or need, to buy. We are also beginning to be able to plan and think ahead, saving money in case we need it (in case Bueller bumps in to something and breaks it, for example!!). We are working in pairs to plan a budget and hope that, at the end, we will be able to buy our (fictional) bikes!

Fantastic February!!

To finish off our learning on Knights and Castles, we made a drawbridge entry to our classroom (we keep it down, though, so people CAN come in!). We then went on an amazing trip to Stirling Castle where we saw all the things we had studied about in real life! We even met the Queen’s lady-in-waiting!

We are Excellent at ICT – we can use Microsoft Excel to make a spreadsheet about the kind of lunches we have and when our birthdays are. We learnt how to use a shortcut to enter days of the week and months of the year. Some of us can even put in money totals and work out amounts spent.

In PE we have been dazzling dancers, shaking our bodies to exciting tunes and choreographing wonderful moves.

We are (unpublished) newspaper hacks, reporting on the discovery of a deeper Loch Ness and all the experiments going on in our classroom – talking of which, we have been exploring sound and vibrations in Science, making lots of crazy loud noises!! (For once, we were allowed to make the noise!)
