Hong Kong Scottish Education Connection 2015

The following pupils participated in the Hong Kong Scottish Education Connection trip alongside pupils from Blairgowrie High, Crieff High,  Lasswade High and Morrison’s Academy:

Julie MacDonald (6a1), Marianne MacDonald (6a1), Jack McDonald (6a7) and Rory Phelan (6a1).

The HKSEC aims to foster and facilitate academic, cultural and sporting links between Scottish and Hong Kong schools. The pupils participated in the Wilson Trail, a 78 km race, 63 km of which runs through Hong Kong country parks. There were two teams entered into the Raleigh Wilson Trail. Team 1 finished in 12:41:43, and Team 2 finished in 13.01.46. A fantastic effort from all involved!

Following the race pupils and staff were given the opportunity to experience Chinese culture and gain a real insight into life in Hong Kong. They visited various landmarks and were given the opportunity to taste some wonderful food. The trip was concluded with a presentation night at Hong Kong’s Royal Yacht Club, a fantastic setting for such an occasion. Pupils spoke in front of 200 distinguished guests, delivering an excellent presentation. The HKSEC team of 2015 have undoubtedly gained some fantastic memories that will last a lifetime.

The team are fundraising for Capability Scotland’s Stanmore House School. Stanmore House is a specialist school in Lanarkshire for day and residential pupils between the ages of 5 and 18 who have severe and complex needs. They have raised over £4000 so far.

‘Live Your Goals’ Event

All S1 girls participated in an event called ‘Live Your Goals’ on Wednesday 17 June.

Over the coming months the pupils will receive input from sports men and women who compete in a range of sports and also people who work in the sports industry (broadcasters, journalists etc). The aim of the programme is to encourage more girls into sports or to consider the possibility of working in sport. It is hoped that this will raise awareness of the job opportunities available to them and that they do not have to play sport at a high level to be involved in sport.

Renfrewshire Summer Netball Tournament

Many congratulations to our S1, S2 and S3 netball teams who attended the Renfrewshire Summer Netball Tournament in Glennifer High School and won all competitions! The girls played exceptionally well throughout the day and won all of their qualifying games convincingly.

Well done also to the S1B team who also made the final of the S1 competition and came second to the S1A team. It was an incredibly close final and both teams played very well.

Shirley Roberts Memorial Tournament

Thanks to all schools who participated in our tournament in memory of our colleague and friend Shirley Roberts. Shirley will always remain in the hearts of everyone at St Ninian’s and yesterday’s tournament is a great example of this.

Six schools from across East Renfrewshire competed in the tournament (Eastwood, Mearns Castle, St Lukes, St Ninian’s, Williamwood and Woodfarm). St Lukes finished the tournament in first place with 17 points and were crowned 2014-2015 Champions.

Our special guest yesterday was Archie Knox. Archie was a very successful manager working alongside Alex Ferguson at Manchester United and Walter Smith at Rangers.  Thanks to Archie for presenting the medals and trophy yesterday. He also spoke to pupils, giving them advice and the motivation on how to be successful in their lives.

Finally, thanks to our S6 pupils who assisted with the running and refereeing of the tournament.
