The children are having a fabulous time at Mearns Primary participating in their STEM fayre.
They have met a real life space scientist and had an opportunity to share ideas with other schools  and participate in a variety of workshops.
This week we used Bonfire night as inspiration for our writing. We wrote acrostic poems using GUNPOWDER PLOT to begin each line. We also learned about the history behind the celebration.
As fireworks play a large part of this, we created our own scratch art using oil pastels and paint to produce our interpretation of a fireworks display.
In science we began our genetics block and looked at inherited traits Vs learned behaviour.
The children were fascinated to find out who could roll their tongue, who had a straight pinky or who had a longer second toe. they compared these traits and discussed if their parents also had these traits. They then learned the reason for this was due to dominant or recessive genes.
Armed with this information, the children worked in groups to create posters comparing examples of what they thought were inherited traits compared to non-inherited traits.
Primary 6’s STEM challenge this week was to work cooperatively to achieve a goal using sticks, cups and cubes. The winning group were able to create a tower 45cm tall, balancing on a 1cm cube! Many of the groups succeeded by using talking and listening skills and working together as a team.

This week the children have been focusing on their mental maths skills each day along with their planned lessons. They have been learning to decompose a number or round it up or down to help them add mentally.
In science they finished their water topic by researching water and its uses. They used ICT to create a sway or powerpoint that they will share and present to the class over the next few weeks.
They continued learning about the lives of Victorian children and were learning all about Victorian food. They made gruel and porridge and compared the taste of the two!
Welcome back to St Marks after a wonderful, sunny summer!
Primary 6a have gotten off to a fantastic start with this terms learning.
They have been learning about mixtures and water and exploring the use of a variety of separation techniques during science.
They have picked up where they left off, in Primary 5 with their ukulele lessons.
They have began their social studies topic which this term will have a historical focus, learning all about The Victorians. They will be reading an associated novel during literacy lessons, which will be allocated shortly. During literacy this term we will also be reading the LW3 books and deepening our knowledge of common grammar rules.
We also loved budding up with Primary 2 and helping them to read stories and we created questions to challenge them.
Keep checking our blog for regular updates on learning experience throughout the year.
Mrs Nelson & Mrs McBrearty.
Primary 5 were learning about chemical reactions today. They were also learning to test a substance to identify if it was an acid or alkali. They made their own ph indicator from red cabbage and predicted what type of ph they thought a substance would have. They identified the ph of a substance by observing the colour change and then checked their answer using a ph indicator strip.
We continued with our science lessons today, building upon yesterdays knowledge.
P5 explored chemical reactions with more depth and created lava lamps to illustrate which of the materials they used reacted together. The majority of the class had hypothesised correctly at the beginning of the experiment but some children were pleasantly surprised at the result and some had been expecting an explosion!

Welcome to the new school year!
Primary 5 promises to be a fantastic year for the children.
The children have been revising their maths skills from Primary 4 and easing into the classroom routine after the long summer break. They have been learning their tables and will continue to do so over the course of the term.
In literacy this term we are studying “The BFG” by Roald Dahl and can look forward to lots of interdisciplinary activities based on this novel. In September we also begin studying the Literacy World series in class.
Our social studies topic is The Scottish Wars of Independence and we will be learning all about famous battles, historic figures and life during the 11-12th centuries.
The children will have added responsibilities around the school this year, now that they are part of the upper school. They began by checking the school garden and assessing the weeds that had grown over the summer holidays. We were pleasantly surprise to see that the rocket, blueberries and broccoli continued to grow unaided and our pear tree bore its first fruit! The children were all able to contribute ideas and opinions about they would like to grow this year.
We are looking forward to a fantastic Primary 5 and children will be blogging on a regular basis to keep you up to date on our learning and adventures!
