Outdoor learning
P6a took full advantage of the beautiful, fresh, but cold weather to take their art lesson outdoors.
We have been learning to work with clay over the last few weeks so the children had to source natural materials to add to their clay to create a face. As it was so cold, snowy and icy they had to use their skills of observation to find and source effective materials.
They loved this task and we will repeat it later on in the year so that they can compare and contrast the experience in different environmental conditions.
Taking maths outdoors.
The squares math group have been learning about area and perimeter recently. We took advantage of the dry weather and used the playground, chalk and meter sticks to draw out squares and rectangles from given measurements. The children then calculated the area and perimeter of their quadrilateral. The children worked in mixed math groups and used the opportunity to share their knowledge with the circles and triangles maths groups. Once they had completed their task the children created a quadrilateral of their own measurements. They then had to measure and calculate the area and perimeter of the shape created by another group. During the plenary discussion children commented that they had enjoyed the task and some of their challenges had been to create shapes using straight lines, particularly when creating larger shapes. One of the ways they found to overcome this problem was by working as a team with one member standing back to observe and give directions if the line began to slant diagonally.
Adam shared his swimming success with the class and Amy shared her dancing trophies! What confident individuals and successful learners we have in Primary 5!
Outdoor learning
We have been continuing to participate in outdoor learning this week.
Children completed a series of challenges. The focus was on teamwork, communication, co-operation, creativity and problem solving. Not all children had a chance to complete all 5 tasks and will participate in each activity over the course of the next few weeks.
They worked together really well and every group met their targets and successfully completed their task!
Jerry park outdoor learning session
Primary 5 teamed up with Primary 1 to experience a variety of outdoor learning activities at the Jerry park today. We were accompanied by some students from Clyde college who had planned four fantastic lessons for us to participate in.
We had to use our maths skills to answer questions to find a code to release a captured bear from his cage!
We listened to a story and discussed the language and vocabulary and put this into the context of the wooded area.
We created potions from natural materials.
We carried out a bug hunt using our science skills of investigation.
Outdoor learning
We teamed up with Primary 1 to share the skills that we have learned with them. Primary 5 taught Primary 1 how to be safe in the school grounds and how to safely collect resources without damaging the natural area.
We worked on math skills and helped Primary 1 children to identify numbers to ,to count to10, to identify length and colours and read the words for these. We then helped them sequence resources that we had collected.
Primary 5 loved having the responsibility of helping the Primary 1 children and they had to think carefully about their own knowledge and understanding of concepts in order to explain it to another child.
