The school disco was attended by many children across the year group. A fantastic time was had by all!
End of term 1
We have been learning to use algorithms and used them to create a sandwich for an alien!
We have also enjoyed some active maths games when revising our tables.
Pupils continued to share their science presentations with the other pupils.
In science we learned about food chains and food webs and created our own posters to showcase our learning.
Maths in context- The playground project
Primary 6 pupils developed their skills through collating all the survey results gathered during the pupil voice outdoor learning lessons.
They had to decide which of the 4 operations to use and when. They then decided as a group how to display their results. They investigated reasons that may have skewed the results and then they created a presentation that they professionally delivered to SLT. Their work is displayed in the schools STEAM room and can be viewed by all visitors, staff and pupils.

What another exciting week here in P6a!
We are continuing to work on our mental maths and the children are offered challenges that they can accept to stretch their abilities.
The children created Venn diagrams based upon Victorian and modern day toys as part of our data handling topic.
They joined together with P6b and applied their math skills in a contextualized situation when learning about Victorian food and its availability and the varied diets of each class. They measured weight, time and temperature to cook a delicious apple cake using apples that were grown in the school garden. They discussed sustainability and the importance of eating healthily along with hygienic practices such as washing their hands and washing the produce.
We were delighted that we received a delivery of back copies of First News. The articles were all relevant and child friendly and Hannah even found an article based on the athlete that she had researched when she learned about The European Games in Primary 5!
Primary 6a were learning about colour blending and they applied this knowledge to the tree silhouette that they had painted last week. the results are outstanding and the chalk looks vibrant against the black paint.
Could those children who have not yet brought in an old top to use as an art shirt please do so asap.
Finally, Prrimary 6a created their own Victorian Thaumatropes!

For maths week we received a visit from a nurse who explained how she used maths in context in her real life job and how important this was to her patients and her multidisciplinary team.
The children had learned to create a SWAY presentation or a powerpoint based upon their science topic of the power and uses of water.
They began to share them with the class this week and will continue to do so over the next few weeks until all children have presented their work.
Primary 6a began to read “Street child” by Berlie Doherty as their class novel. This is related to their Victorians topic. In literacy we have been looking at adjectives as part of our grammar lessons and characterization as a reading skill. The children worked co-operatively to create character descriptions of some of the characters we have been introduced to so far in the novel.
Well done to Artur who created an amazing Victorian factory at home from recycled material. He kindly brought this in to share with the class.

This week the children have been focusing on their mental maths skills each day along with their planned lessons. They have been learning to decompose a number or round it up or down to help them add mentally.
In science they finished their water topic by researching water and its uses. They used ICT to create a sway or powerpoint that they will share and present to the class over the next few weeks.
They continued learning about the lives of Victorian children and were learning all about Victorian food. They made gruel and porridge and compared the taste of the two!

Following on from the previous lesson, P6a investigated how to separate water from other components in a mixture. They collected some muddy water and some dirty water and used a variety of filtration devices to identify which was the most effective at purifying the water.

Welcome back to St Marks after a wonderful, sunny summer!
Primary 6a have gotten off to a fantastic start with this terms learning.
They have been learning about mixtures and water and exploring the use of a variety of separation techniques during science.
They have picked up where they left off, in Primary 5 with their ukulele lessons.
They have began their social studies topic which this term will have a historical focus, learning all about The Victorians. They will be reading an associated novel during literacy lessons, which will be allocated shortly. During literacy this term we will also be reading the LW3 books and deepening our knowledge of common grammar rules.
We also loved budding up with Primary 2 and helping them to read stories and we created questions to challenge them.

Primary 5 took advantage of the lovely weather to investigate time and sun direction.
Visit to Barrhead high
Some of our pupils were lucky enough to visit Barrhead high to gain some inspiration for our future STEAM room.
We were all thoroughly impressed at their premises and resources and the children will be compiling their information and ideas over the next few days.
