W/c 26.11.18

Hello it’s Elise and I am here to talk to you about this week. We were visited by an Italian teacher up in St. Luke’s  . She was teaching us about animals and how to say their names in Italian !.Then we all played a couple of games on an app called Linguascope. I really really enjoyed it .

In Science the children used their maths skills to work together to decide how they were going to carry out a survey on an inherited characteristic, conducted and recorded the survey and then collated the results. They then used ICT to create a variety of graphs of these results.

    

The elves were busy again making Christmas crafts, biscuits and decorating the classroom for the |Christmas fete.

A fantastic time was had by all!

Next week PE days will be on a Monday and Thursday.

Committees will take place on Wednesday. All pupils in the Outdoor learning committee should ensure they have waterproof clothes with them on that day!

Homework w/b 26 November 2018

Homework this week is as follows:

Numeracy – please continue to access Sumdog from home, early bird club or after school in the Family Room (parent/carer must be present). Regular access of this resource will help to boost your own and the classes score. Please speak with Mrs McBrearty or Mrs Nelson if there are any concerns re this.

Outdoor Learning – use the sheet that you have been issued with to select an option or two per night to complete. Colour the activity completed. You might also want to record the activity on your own E portfolio (via Glow) and take some pictures too

 

 

STEM visitor

Today we welcomed Mrs Murray (Skye’s Mum) to our class to talk about Technology and History. She showed us a fantastic presentation which including lots of interesting historical information about Barrhead. We heard about ways to Digitise information and managed to carry out some of our own research using lots of websites including East Renfrewshire Council’s archive section.

Homework w/c 19th November

Children should complete Sumdog as their maths homework this week. This will provide challenge as the questions become harder as they move up the levels and get more correct.

ERC are running a Sumdog competition this week and it would be fantastic if some pupils could make it on to the leaderboard.

All pupils have logins and passwords that have been tested in school. If any child can’t remember their login details, they can copy these down and bring them home.

If any pupils are struggling to gain access to the online activities, then a chromebook will be available for them to complete their tasks at the supervised, free,  early bird club, open daily from 8am and in the family room at 3pm (a guardian should be present at this time).

Any pupils still struggling to gain access  can speak to Mrs Nelson or Mrs McBrearty to make arrangements for them.

W/e 16.11.18

This week we were privileged to be visited by Mark and Mrs Larkin from SCIAF. They taught the children all about SCIAF’s work in Cambodia and the children were able to compare and and contrast their life with the children there by creating a comic strip of their daily routine.

Congratulations to our children who were selected for the badminton team. Following their successful cluster win, they competed against several school from ERC. Well done to all involved!

On Friday, P6a turned into working elves to prepare their enterprise for the Christmas fete. Please consider buying one of our wonderful decorations for £1 on the 30th November.

 

W/E 9.11.18

This week we used Bonfire night as inspiration for our writing. We wrote acrostic poems using GUNPOWDER PLOT to begin each line. We also learned about the history behind the celebration.

As fireworks  play a large part of this, we created our own scratch art using oil pastels and paint to produce our interpretation of a fireworks display.

In science we began our genetics block and looked at inherited traits Vs learned behaviour.

The children were fascinated to find out who could roll their tongue, who had a straight pinky or who had a longer second toe. they compared these traits and discussed if their parents also had these traits. They then learned the reason for this was due to dominant or recessive genes.

Armed with this information, the children worked in groups to create posters comparing examples of what they thought were inherited traits compared to non-inherited traits.

Primary 6’s STEM challenge this week was to work cooperatively to achieve a goal using sticks, cups and cubes. The winning group were able to create a tower 45cm tall, balancing on a 1cm cube!  Many of the groups succeeded by using talking and listening skills and working together as a team.

Inventions showcase

Thank you to all the parents who attended the inventions showcase and to those who assisted the children in their task. The whole school visited our showcase and were blown away by the creativity, effort and standard of work that had gone into the task.

The purpose of this task was to promote thinking skills, improve creativity and problem solving skills and to incorporate STEM into homework along with it’s presence in the classroom.

 

Spooky goings on in Primary 6

This morning we invited P6b in to hear some spooky stories. We turned the lights out, sat around our cauldron and created a fantastic atmosphere!! Ask us about those Sticky notes …………………………..

Term 1 part 2

Welcome to term 1 part 2.

PE days will continue to be a Wednesday and Thursday although children are also outside daily so should bring a waterproof jacket with them at all times.

We picked our pumpkins ready for use in class- more  information will follow shortly.

We will continue with Street Child as a class novel and The Victorians as a topic.

We have began our Italian lessons and were luckily enough to be visited by some high school pupils to help.

 Liam shared some research and facts he had discoved on Jurassic food chains.
