This week we used Bonfire night as inspiration for our writing. We wrote acrostic poems using GUNPOWDER PLOT to begin each line. We also learned about the history behind the celebration.

As fireworks  play a large part of this, we created our own scratch art using oil pastels and paint to produce our interpretation of a fireworks display.

In science we began our genetics block and looked at inherited traits Vs learned behaviour.

The children were fascinated to find out who could roll their tongue, who had a straight pinky or who had a longer second toe. they compared these traits and discussed if their parents also had these traits. They then learned the reason for this was due to dominant or recessive genes.

Armed with this information, the children worked in groups to create posters comparing examples of what they thought were inherited traits compared to non-inherited traits.

Primary 6’s STEM challenge this week was to work cooperatively to achieve a goal using sticks, cups and cubes. The winning group were able to create a tower 45cm tall, balancing on a 1cm cube!  Many of the groups succeeded by using talking and listening skills and working together as a team.
