World Book Week 2017

We have chosen to explore Julia Donaldson stories this week for World Book Week.  We will be discussing a selection of books with a strong focus on rhyme.  The children have come up with some great ideas about how to bring these stories to life and we will continue to enjoy the stories for the next couple of weeks.

The books being focused on are:

  • Superworm
  • One Ted Falls Out of Bed
  • The Gruffalo’s Child
  • The Stickman
  • Tabby McTat
  • Tyrannosaurus Drip

One Ted Falls Out of Bed                                                      The girls build some stairs using Ten red bricks.
One Ted Falls Out of Bed
Using lego to build a bunkbed for Ted.
The Stickman
Using sticks and pipe cleaners to make our own Stickman
Tyrannosaurus Drip
Small World Play using coloured rice, shredded wheat and lettuce leaves!

There will be more photos as the weeks go on of some of the lovely learning we’re doing in the nursery based on World Book Week.

Mr Guetta has been in the nursery this week teaching the boys and girls some French. This week he focused on the vocabulary used when meeting someone.  Here are the phrases we learned if you would like to keep practising at home.

Bonjour

Hello

Je m’appelle …

My name is …

Au revoir

Goodbye

Au revoir!

Another busy week!

OUTSIDE PLAY

The outside area has been transformed into a lovely space for the children to enjoy.  There are many different areas for the children to explore and express themselves.  Try take a wee look next time you are in the nursery!

SNACK TIME

Karen read ‘The Disgusting Sandwich’ with the children and they have been trying toast and different sandwich options for snack time.

COSY CORNER

The children have been enjoying reading the Mog stories with Siobhan down in the cosy corner.  They voted on which character was their favourite.

The children created a bar graph to show which characters from the Mog books they liked the best.

Construction Area

The Construction Area is always a popular choice with the children. They can lay the planks and blocks out and practise  their balancing skills as they walk along.  They often work as a team to get the layout they would like.

The children have access to hammers, saws and screwdrivers and can use them to help improve their fine motor skills.

They enjoy looking at a selection of famous landmarks and trying to recreate them using the big selection of bricks.  They are so proud of their creations!

Outdoor Play

Welcome to the first Nursery Blog for the session 2017-2018! Please check in each week to get an idea of some of the things we have been learning and to see some photos of our learning experiences.

We have had a great start to the year and are welcoming new children on a daily basis. We have spent the first few weeks getting settled in to the amazing new building and all getting to know each other.

We have really enjoyed exploring the outdoor space – in the sunshine and in the rain!

Balance Bikes

We have a large selection of Balance Bikes for the children to develop their cycling skills on.

Stepping Stones

We can practise our balancing skills on the Stepping Stones.

Water Pump/Mud Kitchen

The outdoor tap isn’t quite working yet, so some of the boys had the idea of collecting rain water from the drainpipe. The bowl filled up in seconds! It was a great idea 😊

Amazonia

We had an amazing time on our trip to Amazonia. We learned lots of amazing facts about different creatures and we even had the opportunity to meet some very friendly ones during our handling session.

“We learned that butterflies have long tongues like a straw.” Jared
Lily and Amber spied an ant carrying a leaf.

Some of us were super brave and held Amber the snake! She was very friendly.

We bought our own snake for the nursery and named it ‘Amber’ after the snake we met.

We also met a lovely tortoise. We had to be careful not to touch his head so he wouldn’t get scared.

Primary 1 Transition Taster Day 2.

Could all parents/carers for next year’s Primary 1 children please ensure that they have  ordered lunch for themselves and children for Primary 1 Taster Day 2 which is on Thursday 8th of June.

The order form should be completed and returned to nursery and given to a member of nursery staff. The deadline for ordering the lunch is Friday the 2nd of June.

Thank you

Nursery Mini Gardens

This term we have been  exploring how to grow plants and learn how to care for them. We created our own nursery mini gardens. The children planned a theme for each of our gardens. You can see what fun we had creating these below!
