Too dark to read?

This is one of my favourite quotes:
Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend. Inside of a dog it’s too dark to read.
Groucho Marx
US comedian with Marx Brothers
(1890 – 1977)
And this is the inspiration for the title of this Aussie book web site aimed at YOU!

So, if you are ever stuck for something to read and can not get to me then hop in to this web site for lots of ideas and reviews of books you will want to red.
A tiny touch of warning that other than the US and the UK – Australia probably has some of the very best authors for teens – Paul Jennings, Morris Gleitzman and John Marsden to name but a few and not all have UK publishers.
I do have some sneaky copies of Australian titles so you never know.
let me know what you think of this site or any of the others that I have suggested over the past few weeks or even one of your own that you would like me to promote here on the library web pages.

Flip it!

The most popular magazine at the moment in the library is FLIPSIDE.
If you are a regular library used you will find it in the manga/graphic novel section of the library.

It is jam-packed with pictures and articles on movies and books and TV shows and gadgets and music and and and and and….

If your bi-monthly does of the magazine is not enough to sate your techie appetites then why not pop on to their equally great web site?

There you will find lots of other articles and perhaps even a competition or two you might want to enter.

Let me know how you get on!

Trust Scottish

Book Trust

If you are looking for something new to read or some competitions to enter then pop along to the Scottish Book Trust web site.

If you find a brilliant read that we do not have here at St.Ninian’s please let me know and I will do my best to add it to our stock.

If you do visit the web site let me know what you thought of it or if you have your own favourite booky web site let me know and it might just feature on these pages!

Retro-gaming site

http://pica-pic.com/

Is the type of web site that the terms “back in the day” and Old Skool” were coined for.

Show this to any geeky adult over 25 and you might hear a gentle wistful sigh of a lost youth or a Christmas present promised but never delivered.
THIS is how hand held gaming should be – none of your fancy 4 core processors or detailed graphics or 3-Dish ness. This is when pixels rules and blips and beeps were music to the ears.
So, dive into digital history and save the princess or avoid the log or eat the ghost and most of all enjoy!

Social Bookmarking – 2 ways to organise

Yes, yes we all know about social networking – blah blah Facebook, yadda yadda twitter and how super useful they are to tell random people on the Internet that you like soup!

But an actually useful web site or actually couple of web sites (well, I have been on holiday) are delicious and for you visual learners out there Pearltrees.

Saving your favourites can be cumbersome and time consuming. The bookmarking element means that you can pop a little widget at the top of your screen and simply click on it whenever you find a site that is of use and the social element means you can link up with other people and share useful sites. You can tag and organise all your sites which makes it easier to search.

As many of you know I HATE boring presentations but to be honest who does?

So, one web site I am very happy to tell you about is animoto.

This is a clever little site where you can create your own mini videos; or as I am currently working on with S1 mini adverts.

You can sign up for free as long as you only want to create vids or films of 30 seconds long then it stays free.

Bye Bye Powerpoint- hello Animoto

Go BZRK!

http://gobzrk.com/

This is the brain child of Gone author Michael Grant (who will be coming to Glasgow soonish for the Aye Write festival). If you have read his other books then BZRK will not be too much of a shock if you have not then be afraid probably very afraid!

This web site is a brilliant example of a growing trend in storytelling called “Transmedia” – which started as an academic term, coined by Henry Jenkins in his book Convergence Culture who said, “transmedia represents the integration of entertainment experiences across a range of different media platforms,” Jenkins defines transmedia as storytelling that “immerses an audience in a story’s universe through a number of dispersed entry points, providing a comprehensive and coordinated experience of a complex story.”

One person has described the book as if “Stephen King had written Lord of the Flies”, this should give you an idea (or warning!) of what to expect.

I am planning something of my own transmedia project in the next few months based on The Hunger Games – so watch this web site for more information. Oh, and enjoy going BZRK!
